Dean: If I Were A Senator I'd Vote For Opt-Out Public Option

Commented Oct 09, 2009 at 08:30:47 in Politics

“Opt out is a great idea. After a few years, we will be able to compare results between states that opted out and those that did not. If those of us who support not-for-profit health insurance are correct, then our states should benefit both in terms of the overall health of our residents and in our levels of economic activity as it becomes less expensive to do business and easier to operate small businesses in our states. The recalcitrant states will become ever more feudal.”

powerlift2201 replied on Oct 09, 2009 at 11:46:08

“Then the leaders of said states will be forced to answer to the people who both need and want a public option.”

“The officlal line on this is that is makes no sense to raise anyone's taxes in a recession but this is not necessarily true. The important thing to do in a recession is to make sure that consumers do no have less to spend. We could accomplish this by repealing the Bush tax cuts while cutting lower rates by enough to offset the revenue increase from the repeal. In other words, we could make the tax code less flat/more progressive. How one feels about this is a political question but the safe bet to make seems to be that it would be unpopular. Officially Democrats and Republicans have different attitudes towards the flatness or progressivitiy of the tax schedule but unofficially they both rely on affluent donors to fund their campaigns so it is really in no one's political interest to do it ever. Whether or not it is good public policy depends on one's views of tax policy and deficit spending.”

“We don't elect people based on their resumes, but rather on the votes they get. This may not be a good thing but it is so. If it were otherwise, we would already have elected Ted Kennedy ('76), GHW Bush or Howard Baker ('80), a whole lot of people other than a 46 yr old former Governor of Arkansas ('92), and Gore ('00). Obama won the nomination only by a whisker but win it he did. Biden's great resume raised him no money and got him no primary votes. Biden needs Obama's political skills as much as Obama needs his policy experience. In sports we call that a team.”

“Getting someone with foreign policy experience is falling into a GOP trap. The Karl Rove playbook says "appeal to your base." For us, that is women. We could put Mars (Roman God of War) on the ticket, and most men obsessed with military issues would still vote for McCain.

It would not be pandering to put someone one the ticket who has executive experience and a track record of winning independent and Republican votes.

She will not deliver Kansas but will help in neighboring Colorado and Missouri.

McCain will pick last because his convention is later.

We cannot wait two months because we need to hit the ground running and take the fight to them.

Arizona May Be A Swing State

Arizona May Be A Swing State

Commented Jun 10, 2008 at 20:39:53 in Politics

“Arizona is, along with Nevada, California, Florida, Michigan, and Ohio, among the states most devastated by the mortgage/credit/housing crisis. It is virtually impossible to handicap those states based on recent electoral outcomes because in both 2004 and 2006, the housing market was booming thanks to an endless supply of cheap credit. Now that the credit bubble has burst, foreclosures are approaching Depression levels, and people working previously as subcontractors making good incomes that could support their pickup truck's fuel bills are flipping burgers to make ends meet, it is completely up in the air how these states Reagan Democrats will vote. Arizona is definitely in the mix and the Democrats need to hammer home the message that Republican unwillingness to regulate the banking industry has created the problems so many of their residents must now endure.”

heal57 replied on Jun 10, 2008 at 22:33:48

“We here in Arizona have many foreclosures. It's very sad. People still keep coming here to live but we do have a housing crisis and it will take time to resolve. One problem here in Arizona is that we have alot of people over 55-60 who generally will vote for McCain. I'm in my 60's but want a better life for my kids and grandkids to I'm voting for Barack Obama. I'd love if we could change things here but i don't think we're ready to go democratic this year, but I'm hopeful!!

“Excellent points. Phil Gramm was Chairman of the Senate Finance (?) Committee which produced legislation that de-regulated a lot of the financial industry, so that not even a fox was guarding the hen house. Phil Gramm is now a major McCain supporter and is especially involved in developing Sen. McCain's economic policies. Talk about a target-rich environment.”
