Men In Speedos: Simon Doonan Sounds Off On Americans' 'Freudian Fear'

“It seems clear women's objections are largely based on a denial of reality. On nudist beaches, men and women, whatever the body condition, often look better than when their bodies are contorted by their clothes. You just have to get used to the real physical world. If you can relax and let reality undergird your esthetic, you might learn to appreciate a larger range of human anatomies.

Men's college pools have long banned swimming suits altogether on the justification that lint from them clogged the pool's filters and drains, adding to costs. When these schools were integrated in the 60s and 70s, rather than double the pools, many became co-ed and there were few complaints then and I assume now.”

“In going to Mexico for a debate at an International conference Condoleezza Rice, a leading war criminal on several counts, would seem to be at high risk of extradition or rendition. Is she courageous, foolhardy or as dumb as Bush thinking he could travel to Italy but then had to cancel for the obvious security risks?”

“The Roman Church finally has to come to terms with Catholics in the United States behaving like like citizens in a democracy. With the backing of Pope Benedict they are cracking the whip through bishops appointed by Rome. It should be an obvious irony that they are complaining about their loss of religious freedom at just the time when they are denying the religious freedom of others who don't share their views of abortion, as well as threatening their parishioners to curb their civil liberties. But Americans are going to give up their Catholicism long before they give up their rights as U.S. Citizens. I have. The bishops are setting up a split of U.S. Cathoicism from Rome. We should long ago have insisted on at least nominating if not electing our Church leaders. This medieval belief in "Natural Law" is not only unnatural but increasingly in conflict with common sense let alone science.”

It is possible nevertheless to be fiscally prudent as O has been not enough of in shorting the stimulus, but then he had the profligate, short-sighted Republicans to deal with.”

“HuffPost style editors are sounding more and more like Mitt Romney. Most wedding dresses would offend someone's idea of "appropriate". Those shown no more than any others. If that's what they want to wear, let them wear it. Why shouldn't the bride (or groom) come to the altar nude, symbolizing their decision. Most wear white for heaven's sake to symbolize virginity and abstinence, whatever the facts. Does Huff Post feel it has to hide behind these hypocrisies to excuse ever more sensationalism? Thought Arianna wanted transparency; so mix a little semi-candor with your semi-nudity.”

“The NCAA should have shut itself down and all college varsity sport with it. They corrupt higher education with fostering football alumni--those graduates for whom higher education never took--empowered to influence academic decisions for the worse. Intra-mural sports should more than satisfy students' need for physical exercise. Paying coaches multi-millions of dollars a year is the wrong message to send to the students and the institution. This over-emphasis on sports is being passed along to high schools and even little leagues now. It now ranks as a social pathology.”

Student Loan Debt Sours Public Opinion On College Degrees' Worth, Consumers Prioritize Retirement Savings Instead: Survey

“I've never understood the people who think college should be worth it in terms a later job or rate of pay. They are deluded. Going to college--if it takes--means you are going to learn that there are better ways to spend your life than simply earning money; so you are much less likely to take the field or jobs that will bring in the most money in the first place and settle for more rewarding life returns. Secondly, you acquire fairly expensive tastes in wines, art, books (and rooms to keep books), travel, continuing education, esthetically pleasing design, etc. Some of this is offset by using that education to keep it balanced, but there is no way an education is going to be "worth it" as a business proposition. It's a never-ending but worthwhile tax to pay for being alive to your own time and place in the universe.”

alisha4511 on Jul 18, 2012 at 20:48:41

“I disagree. My choice to go to college got me out of the working poor and into the middle class. Even after I make my monthly student loan payments I am still able to save $600/month apart from putting 10% of my income toward retirement. I believe, I would never be able to do this had I not went to college.”

“Professional and varsity sports have long been adjuncts of organized crime. Worse, they corrupt the academic experience. Wealthy alumni like to brag their alma mater and, through financial support of athletics, have become influential in academic matters and appointments. Thus proving that their own education never "took". In the broader nation, sports have become a social pathology. Fans become elated or depressed by whether "their" team wins or loses. This despite the fact most of the teams are made up of players from various states and even countries with which the fan has no meaningful connection. Yet they continue to live vicariously, extending the same approach to foreign and sectarian affairs chauvinistically. Still worse, the idea that sports define or round out high school and now grade school athletes is being broadly accepted. "Aggressive" and "competitive" have become positive terms and virtues rather than serious personality flaws. How can we mature as a society with this kind of infantilism?”

Notsosurearewe on Nov 24, 2012 at 20:21:01

“On the positive side: doing exercise does help to maintain a positive attitude while fighting off the effects of obesity, amongst other things. While I was at the University of Chicago, there was an on-campus study that noted that the students who were on sports teams of some sort did better academically than their peers. Granted, there weren't many "professional" teams, but when the basketball team went to the "Sweet 16" .. I forget what year it was, but in the late 90s a lot of fans popped out of the woodwork to see the games.”

Might as well start out a fatuous argument with a completely ridiculous, totally unsupported statement... sounds good, who cares if it has zero basis in fact. Gambling, yes.. sports, no, unless you consider boxing a sport.”

Obama Administration Outsources Torture: Can U.S. Ever End Human Rights Abuses?

Commented Aug 20, 2012 at 21:11:19 in Politics

“The answer to those who pose the question of would you torture if some disaster were sure to happen if you didn't at least try a questionable technique--torture. I think most of us would, but that is civil disobedience and the rules of that are that those responsible for such a clearly illegal act should be tried accordingly. (Outside of Texas and a few other places) We do not excuse the murderer of serial murderer. We did not let the murderer of Lee Harvey Oswald off because his victim was a popular U.S. president. So fine if everyone from Bush to the CIA operatives who applied it are put on trial and if convicted sentenced accordingly.”
