Curb Your Enthusiasm: Live From Capitol Hill

Curb Your Enthusiasm: Live From Capitol Hill

Commented Sep 20, 2009 at 11:24:29 in Politics

“There are a number of obvious flaws to your argument. First, we must acknowledge, no life is more or less valuable than another. But, a life-to-life comparison removes this discussion from its context. When placed in context, there is an entirely different meaning behind a threat on the life of the President of the United States, and a threat on the life of a talk show host. Bringing the discussion even further into context, President Obama has received more death threats than any other president, and he hasn't even been in office a full year.

Second, Speaker Pelosi did not paint critics of the Obama Administration with a broad brush of violent incitement. She was speaking to the peculiar tension in our national climate, as evidenced by an increase in gun sales, Joe Wilson's "empassioned" outburst, and the scenes broadcast from numerous town hall meetings. To speaker Pelosi, it is reminiscent of the atmosphere that existed in San Francisco prior to the assasinations.”

“The problem, Brooksie182, is capitalism in theory (as you described) should work that way. But, the "error term" in that model is human greed. Instead of competition producing better products, corporations are using cheaper materials and underpaying (and underinsuring) their workers. This fact is clearly demonstrated in a wide variety of industries... wall street, the auto industry, Wal-Mart, big Oil, and Health Care!!! If capitalism worked the way you described, I'd be all for it. But, unfortunately, some people (enough to create a problem) are greedy crooks.”

Brooksie182 replied on Jul 24, 2009 at 13:24:45

“I appreciate all your opinions...even those of you who can't make a point without tacking on a little sarcasm or smugness. I just think that the fact that there are imperfections in our system makes us normal, not abnormal. Much like in the health care debate, those imperfections require adjustments be made, not a total overhaul and not such a radical change in thinking that Mr. Maher is advocating here. These imperfections are part of a system that has afforded the people of this country so many wonderful things over the past 200 years, the least of them material.”

Hypothyroidism: How Your Thyroid Can Make You Sick, Tired, And Overweight

Commented Jul 23, 2009 at 20:17:43 in Living

“This article describes my life to a "T" (for Thyroid). I know all of this and so does my doctor. I take Synthroid every day. But, since my TSH(?) levels are now "normal," my doctor will not do anything else. I struggle with these symptoms every day of my life. The memory issue is getting progressively worse, as is the fatigue. What do I do if my doctor refuses to help?????”

Paros replied on Jul 23, 2009 at 23:32:37

“Try coconut oil and look for a naturopath or a Harvard Med trained endencrinologist. Most doctors treat the T-4s but the T-3s are not treated at all - that is a large part of the problem.”

Let Women Wear the Hijab: The Emptiness of Obama's Cairo Speech

Commented Jun 04, 2009 at 10:53:58 in World

“Those kinds of changes will not come from a speech. That speech was a vehicle for strengthen relationships. Only after you establish a relationship can you begin to address those deeply-ingrained human rights issues. Had Obama approached the speech as a platform for women's rights, future progress may have been jeopardized. The Bush-era methods were a failure. We must be more intelligent about building relationships, instead of simply dictating terms and conditions.”

“I love the stripped-down version of life! I often think back on how I chased the so-called American dream, and in the process I consumed and spent my way to unhappiness. I just didn't know it at the time. Consumerism is not only unsustainable, it's deceptively unfulfilling. Now, I drive a hooptie car and often shop at the Goodwill. I'm sitting here with the windows open enjoying the afternoon breeze, when previously, I would have turned on the AC. And guess what? I have a lot more of that quality time you mentioned, because I'm not chasing a paycheck. This is living! Praise the Lord!”

Race is always a factor in American society. If you'd like that to change, do something about it. Denying it only perpetuates the problem. On the other hand, if you lack the intellectual capacity to grasp the nuances of race in this story, shut the F up and let the grown-ups discuss it.”
