Colorado College Defends Use Of The Word 'Queer' On Gender Section Of Job Applications

Colorado College Defends Use Of The Word 'Queer' On Gender Section Of Job Applications

Commented Nov 9, 2013 at 18:14:40 in Gay Voices

“I understand that "Queer" is a term used by some to identify gender, but why does such an offensive word have to be used to describe gender? I have been reading here folks describe gender using words like: male, female, gender neutral, gender fluid, dual gender, pan gender; why not use those identifications instead? Those are in fact the terms being used to describe gender identity by the individuals themselves. Even the argument that "Queer" is a gender is oppressive and marginalizing if you think about it, because a person who is gender fluid is not the same as someone who is gender neutral or dual gender, but the consolidation that occurs with the "Queer" term treats the diverse genders all the same, when in fact they are not. Why would you list male and female separately, and then cluster everyone else with equally diverse gender identification into one group? Let's take it a step further, why identify by a social construction at all? The very act of classifying humanity is oppressive. Why participate in such systems at all?”

“It's not just words that crush, it's tire irons and fists too. Perhaps you missed the part about the physical violence that is part of that word.”

LLgood on Nov 11, 2013 at 17:10:45

“As someone who identifies as queer, I'm sorry that you feel that my usage of the word disregards your experiences, and I'm truly sorry for all the pain that you have been through. It would be ignorant to disregard your experience, just because I don't think using the word is harmful anymore. Words have different meanings to different people, and I respect your choice to reject the use of the word.”

“That word means to me social and cultural systematic oppression and violence found also in law and policy, exercised at every level from local to federal. I have experienced firsthand some of what that word means; the meaning is not only derived from the act of verbalizing the word, it is coupled with physical acts, including but not limited to: castration, mutilation, psychological terror, exclusion, medical experimentation, psychological experimentation, beat downs, arrest, execution, mob violence, torture, shame, hiding, suicide and so much more evil I cannot list it all. To me, the act of redefining that word removes its reality and disconnects its historical significance that includes emotional and physical violence. The word will always be offensive to me because I lived it in various forms verbally, emotionally, and physically many times over. I find the act of redefining the word marginalizes the experiences of too many people (myself included) who have already been marginalized by its active use, in as much as the process of redefining the word eliminates any recognition of the experience, struggle, violence and historical significance that comprise the whole meaning of the word. You cannot just flip a switch and say those violent things that happened don't matter anymore because we've reclaimed the word, and now it's something positive. Well I'm not dead yet, and the act of redefinition is just another form of marginalization and oppression.”

“Thank you!  I did miss that part. I am glad those rates have some flexibility, as I know a lot of folks who need health insurance, but could never come up with that kind of money each month. ”

shirleyfeeney on Sep 26, 2013 at 01:01:36

“We're currently without insurance and have been for three years when my husband lost his job in 2010. He finally found employment, but with ACA coming up they opted to not renew their group insurance. My husband is 62. What it would have cost for him alone was quite expensive, to add on us and our three kids would have been horrible. With ACA, we'll get the subsidy instead of his employer since they've decided to not offer insurance anymore, and according to what we've seen so far, it will cost us about $250 a month. Another added benefit is something many aren't speaking about--portability. When my husband lost his job the COBRA cost was over $1800 a month, and on unemployment there wasn't enough to pay for that. With ACA, insurance will follow us. No need to worry about insurance when one switches jobs. That's comforting.”

“No, I live in MA., so when I was in between jobs and had no income I was able to buy into Romneycare.  I had two options 1. $100/month for a plan that was not accepted within a 75 mile radius of my house (I don't have a car).  2. $450.00/month for a plan that 1 doctor accepted in my town.  Obviously I was burning through savings fast, so I went with the plan that I couldn't even use.  I found a job with benefits within a month, so was not long on that program, but what a cluster it was!  Talk about motivation to secure a benefited job!!!”

“I don't think think that's what drives them nuts, I think it's more to the point that either you have to buy this insurance/have qualifying comparable insurance or pay penalties. It is the principle that people shouldn't be forced to procure products they don't want. They would believe at they should be able to choose to buy it, or not buy it.”

“I don't know, but in MA we have Romneycare, the first version of this. I had to use it for a while when I was between jobs. They offered me two plans, 1. $100.00/month, but no physicians in my area accepted this plan 2. $450.00/month for a plan I could use in my town. Keep in mind I had no job at this point and no income. What a choice!?! I went with the plan for $100.00 that I couldn't even use. This mandatory healthcare or pay the penalty is absolutely horrible, at least it is here. I doubt it gets better on a federal level.”

“That's the cheapest plan? It seems kind of high to me. I am not sure how folks who didn't have that kind of cash to procure insurance on their own before are going to find the cash to swing this. I am not poor by federal standards, and yeah those prices for mandatory health insurance seem ridiculous. If you're going to force people to buy it, or penalize them for not buying it, then at least make it something everyone can actually buy.”

“You may want to google this word: Subsidy, it's what everyone showing less than 45K on their return will get. And the fine for not getting insurance is $95. Reading is a good skill to learn.”

“I don't give $ to homeless people, although I have no problem buying a bottle of water or some food when I see someone who needs it. I think supporting local organizations like food pantries, goodwill, and shelters are important too. Too many people go hungry, or do not know where their next meal is coming from. One problem where I live is affordable housing. Rent is much too high, and I think a lot younger and older people suffer unduly as a result. I think a lot of people also do not ask for help, or are too prideful to go to the food pantry. I think just keeping an eye out for neighbors can help too, rides to the market if you neighbor doesn't have transportation, invitations to come to dinner, shoveling someone's sidewalk, mowing your neighbor's lawn, simple things like that can help a lot and do make a difference.”

“I had a guy walk up to me once in Chicago, he said to me " Listen man, you look like a smart guy, I'm not going to BS you, I need a drink, bad." He looked about 10 minutes away from going into DTs. I gave the guy 5 bucks and he thanked me. Once you get to that level of drinking, you can die if you don't get booze. He was honest and straight up and with me, he didn't try the old, I need bus fare to get home thing, and I appreciated that. Sure he played me, but so what, he didn't lie about needing booze. I've done the thing before too where I say I'll buy them something to eat when they say they need money for food but they really want booze or drug money, they just get pissed and walk away.”

“Those are all very good ideas, however when I was in town Monday morning, I saw a young homeless man downtown shortly after the shelter closed. When the shelter closes the homeless have no where to go but the library during the day. The poor kid was shivering and I gave him $20 to get some coffee and a hot breakfast. He didn't ask for money, but how could I have walked by and done nothing?”
