“You have "affordable" health insurance. That's their euphemism for: if the premiums don't get you, copayments will. This bill is a boon for the health insurance industry and a disaster for us, their victims. I wonder, who do the senators think they're fooling with all this joy at passing a health insurance industry enrichment bill.”
Obama hails 60th Senate vote for health care

“This is a sorry, shameful day for the Democrats. They're scapegoating Lieberman and Nelson and the rest, but we have to face the apparent truth that this was the goal from the very beginning, that health care reform was never the goal, that this bit of political theater was about delivering even more victims to the insurance companies.
To add insult to injury, they say that it was only a radical fringe that wanted health care reform, and so there will be no political consequences for Democrats. We'll see.”

“Why do you teabaggers and deniers find so much significance in a December show storm and so little significance in the melting poles, or in an 80-degree December day like the one we had a few weeks ago?
And the "they" with the dire weather warnings are the local newsbabes. "They" call every rainstorm a nor'easter and every snow storm the apocalypse. So it's December 19 and it's going to snow. (But who could forget The Blizzard of '96! That we survived it is a miracle! That's our evening news, all apocalypses and miracles.”

“The only part of our hideous health care coverage system that is reliable is Medicare. Ask around at the senior center to see what they think of this government "meddling. You'll find lots of happy people. In other news, desperate Americans are flying to Bangkok for affordable, high-quality health care, and they're driving to Canada to by prescriptions.
Some people oppose health care reform because the health care lobby pays them to, and some like Ron Paul are naive enough to think that in a world without government regulation we'll all join hands and sing a song in perfect harmony. Actually, government regulation saves us from each other. A government -sponsored health plan for all would save us from the health insurance industry.”

“Paul certainly doesn't defend the status quo in medical care. He thinks there's far too much government meddling in the delivery of medicine right now, and that the distortions to the market caused by all that meddling, and the barriers to entry created by various licensing laws, the FDA, and the rest of it are major factors in the high costs of healthcare.
Paul thinks there are a lot of problems with the current system. He just doesn't believe the promises of the politicians that everything will be fixed by expanding the role of government in healthcare even more.
Government doesn't mandate cell phones for every American, and yet, lo and behold, the free market has delivered cell phones so cheap that even homeless people can afford them.
And insurance doesn't cover cosmetic surgery, and yet, lo and behold, a free and competitive marketplace has delivered cosmetic surgery procedures that are affordable, safe and widely available.
Most politicians are more than willing to promise you anything and everything, they know from experience that they'll never be held to account when the bill comes due. They're doing it now with this pie-in-the-sky "we know how to fix healthcare" hubris.”

The Republicans led us into the criminal enterprise they call the war in Iraq and they did it with a puny majority in the senate. Even when their venality is shockingly transparent, Republicans always prevail.

I think I get Sirota's point about people who work hard for their rewards versus people who work easy for them, but he picked the wrong movie to illustrate it. One could argue that Julia Child would have remained anonymous without having met Simone Beck and then Judith Jones (especially Judith Jones) or the friend who directed her toward Cambridge where her book got her a shot at the public television. She's an icon today, but fifty years ago she was just a talented woman with a lot of good fortune. Many talented people never catch a break.
Julie Powell didn't split the atom, but she had an original idea and a talent for writing and she made something from nothing. I admire her for it. Her book is very funny. I like Nora Ephron too.”
