Little Green Footballs' Charles Johnson Breaks With The Right
Commented Dec 01, 2009 at 15:26:54 in Politics
“I'm not old enough to remember the McCarthy witch hunts first hand, but from the 60s through the present the Republican Party has depended first, last, and always on fear. Irrational fear. They got people to be afraid of every "attempt to undermine American society" that came along: black people, Communism, rock and roll, hippies, long hair (!), short skirts, marijuana, war protesters, gay people, women's right activists, the American Civil Liberties Union, and especially sex.
One big difference between then and now is that the right used to have to temper it because there was a legitimate news industry that kept them restrained. Today you won't hear skepticism about Republican policies on cable news, network news, or NPR. When the news makes Republicans look bad, you hear all about balloon boy, party crashers, runaway brides, octomom, or the freakshow of the week. Ted Koppel got taken off the air for saying the names of men and women who were killed in Iraq. Bob Woodward wrote books that portrayed Bush as a master of strategery. The New York Times put Judith Miller's lies on the front page. It's a wonder the US has an ounce of civility left in us.
As long as corporations rule our lives, we're sunk.”

Little Green Footballs' Charles Johnson Breaks With The Right

“All Obamamaniacs are liberals, but not all liberals are Obamamaniacs. I like him, but I don't like-him like-him because of all his compromising overtures to the right. He needs to be a little more like Howard Dean, measured and politically astute but unmistakably a liberal Democrat. I never understood Obamamania, but it's a lot more sensible than the crowd of yahoos who wanted to drink beer with the torturer in chief. Obamamaniacs, without the Obama. Just maniacs.”

“It's always nice to see someone come out into the light, but I have to wonder, why did he not see all that before. The Republican Party has not changed one iota in 20 years.”
Tony Gagliano replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 14:12:52
“My friend I have to disagree....the republicans were mostly obstructionists around the era of Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, Bill Frist, etc. but they've added a dash more fear into their plans, gallons of misinformation and lying, and of course...tons more of hate. I went from disliking the party to total revulsion, disgust, and downright scared crapless.”

“It's always been there, under the surface, but with Barack Obama elected president, the r@cist beliefs are bubbling up to the surface. When none of the conservative leaders denounced the r acist baiting that began during the campaign, it gave free reign to those who have these backward beliefs. It's like Pandora's Box -- they let it be opened and now there's no shutting it again -- the wave of ugly is going to have to run its course and decent people will turn away in disgust.”

Obama's Afghanistan Plan: 30,000 Troops, No Endless Committment
Commented Dec 01, 2009 at 09:41:34 in Politics
“It's not a war, it's an occupation. These invasions they lied us into, and the occupations they grossly mismanaged were the work of a Republican administration. Overseas conflict is good for Republican politicians and military contractors, so Republicans will always support wars, real and fake. Democrats, apparently Obama included, think they have to act like Republicans in order to get the red state yahoos to vote for them, so we get an escalation in Afghanistan when we ought to withdraw. They're probably planning to withdraw after Obama's reelected, but who knows what catastrophes caused by these political calculations will happen between now and then. It's like a 60s flashback.”

“This smells a little of Washington Post procurer Katherine Weymouth, giving way to the rank stench of toadying doorstop salesman Bob Woodward, and finally the sarin gas of David Broder's dean-ish insights, all brought together in the rotting carcass of Newsweek, where people who live in valleys without electricity turn for last week's news.”

“And it was okay for Christians to enslave and lynch blacks. It was okay to deny women every right on earth till just 200 years ago. Every culture needs time to evolve, violence in the middle east has NOTHING to do with Islam. It is cultural ignorance from people who lived in isolation of the rest of the world till 1950s and the oil boom. Your christian values caused the world two wars and massacred the Jewish people three times in the Holy Land, Spain and in Germany. Look who is talking about violence”
