NY-23 Election Takes On Outsize Importance

NY-23 Election Takes On Outsize Importance

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 22:46:55 in Politics

Nope, but there isn't much you can do...

Voting for a democrat or a republican that dives i the back pocket of the lobbyist and ignores the voters just doesn't seem like a winning option.

What are we suppose to do keep voting for the same parties and 'hope' that someday they'll magically wake up and care about the voters??”

strangelet replied on Nov 03, 2009 at 23:47:16

“Well, elections have real consequences. If you actually care about the consequences, you try to elect the best candidate with a plausible chance. If you just can't stand any (more often, either) of the candidates with a plausible chance, then I guess it makes sense to vote for "principle".

But, in such a case, you ought to realize that you are giving up your ability to influence the outcome.”

Not sure about the republican thing, the next elections in Oregon I'm going independent. If a race doesn't have an independent running I'm writing in "None of the Above".

I feel like I fell for all of the democrats promises when all they wanted was to be first in line at the lobbyist feeding trough for a while...”

What's not being said is they pay the capital gains rate of 15%.

When (or if) I get a raise or bonus it gets taxed as income. So should theirs!”

oldguru replied on Oct 21, 2009 at 15:52:51

“Yeah. The bottom line is that they probably don't pay capital gains anyway. It's only us retirees who have gotten killed in the market by the decline in our retirement savings and investments who pay capital gains..The only upside of this disaster is that I have enough losses to offset any capital gain that I MIGHT make for the rest of my life.”

“Nothing you say here matters.

The politicians are counting you you venting on forums like this and not following through!

Go to Congress.org and find your Congressional representatives and send them your views and opinions (be polite).

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt

Ask your representatives why some people are allowed to pay less than their fair share. Not only hedge fund manager but also all of those wall street bonuses are taxed as capital gains (~15%) but if we get a bonus its taxed as income!

Also, while we are at it let's make sure the members of congress are paying their fair share also.”

“Actually their getting these bonuses doesn't bother me if they have earned them.

What bothers me it that if I get a bonus it's taxed as income.

These guys get taxed at the much lower capital gains rate of around 15%!

How it that even remotely fair or honest???”

lonecrone replied on Oct 21, 2009 at 18:13:23

“How did they earn it? Does driving a business into the ground and ruining the finances of millions of people qualify as earning it? I guess if you measure it by how much profit it generated for the mega rich then according to the pigs at the trough who got our money, they earned it. But if you measure it by all those who lost everything, then how on earth can anyone say they earned it?”

“You know, getting passed is one thing but doing it without a boat load of loopholes, exemptions and special payoffs is even more important!

So here's what I would like to see:

1. Let us see the final bill before its passed!!
2. Show us in simple terms what deals were made, by who and for how much.
3. Quick closing of identified loopholes!

Yeah, I know I'm a dreamer. But don't we deserve the best?”

Welfare Reform for Wall Street

“Hey Les,

Great article but you missed one...

Bonuses will be taxed as income not capital gains!

Most of use get a bonus at work and it's taxed like income at the full rate. Not only are they getting bailed out but they don't have to pay their 'fair share' of taxes.

Kind of makes me wonder what tax rate congress has set for themselves.”

And even though Amazon wants you to think they will benevolently keep your ebooks safe on their server I don't trust them and keep local backups of all of my Kindle purchases.

Or more likely they will start charging you to download your ebooks after the first time.

The point being, the Kindle is a great device but you don't have to drink the kool-ade and trust Amazon to do the right thing...”
