“You know, getting passed is one thing but doing it without a boat load of loopholes, exemptions and special payoffs is even more important!

So here's what I would like to see:

1. Let us see the final bill before its passed!!
2. Show us in simple terms what deals were made, by who and for how much.
3. Quick closing of identified loopholes!

Yeah, I know I'm a dreamer. But don't we deserve the best?”

Welfare Reform for Wall Street

Commented Oct 19, 2009 at 15:24:07 in Business

“Hey Les,

Great article but you missed one...

Bonuses will be taxed as income not capital gains!

Most of use get a bonus at work and it's taxed like income at the full rate. Not only are they getting bailed out but they don't have to pay their 'fair share' of taxes.

Kind of makes me wonder what tax rate congress has set for themselves.”

BLBass replied on Oct 19, 2009 at 16:54:27

“1. I've never watched FOX. The problem with politics like that is Obama promised open discussions not more behind closed door special deals. And if you will remember when the back door Pharma deal first came to light the White House denied it. I want openness and honesty.

2. Did you actually read the article or the section I commented on? The problem is they are telling the public they support a 'public option' while telling Big Pharma and the insurance companies that the public option will not be included.

3. Where did the idea of prejudice come into anything I wrote?? Are you one of those who accuse anyone that disagrees with the president of being prejudiced?”

Commented Sep 29, 2009 at 13:10:41 in Politics

“OK, one part that really, really bothers me is the statement:

"Big Pharma and big insurance hate the public insurance option even more than they hate big Medicare discounts. And although the President has sounded as if he would welcome it, political operatives in the White House have quietly reassured the industries that it won't be included in the final bill. "

If this is true then It appears the White House is deceiving us and along with Congress is in the pockets of the lobbyist.

I did not support and vote of Obama so he could lie to us and protect his already rich friends.

Just once I would like to see 'the good of the people' actually win out over 'the good of our rich friends'!”

dhinds replied on Sep 29, 2009 at 13:37:53

“When the Obama Campaign offered "Change You Can Believe In", he apparently meant "Change he believes he can Achieve", which in this case depends in large part on the amount the Industries he wants to change will spend presenting this issue to the public in ways that benefit their own economic interests.

If this is true, Obama probably assumes that negotiating an achievable, significantly improved addition to the current Health Care System is the best or only way to reach his goals.

Personally, I think that creating a new, non-profit research-based option is an indispensable element of what America needs to care for it's ill, and I don't see that being offered in any current legislation. As far as I know, there's been nothing presented to date that delves into the environmental and dietary causes of disease, which is an oversight that protects the right of those contaminating the USA's ecosphere and food supply to continue doing so.

I'm saying that the current discussion is looking in the wrong direction - on both sides.”

“Ran6110...Its evident that you really dont know how politics work. They make a deal with Big Pharma to keep them from intensifying the already explosive debate on health care. Your comments show your ignorance and inability to seperate from the truth from fiction. Keep watching Fox!!!

The public option will create competition, competition is good for the consumer (econ 101) You missed that class. This way Big Pharma may have to give up subsidies, but in turn they get millions of new customers.

This also helps medicaid because now they can use leverage to get better health care deals for its base. Wake up dude..dont prejudice get in the way of truth.”

On Wednesday, the President Has to Move the Health Care Debate from a Marketplace of Lies to a Marketplace of Ideas

Commented Sep 07, 2009 at 15:30:17 in Politics

“OK, two things....

1. I think the Charles Grassley comment might be true but I heard he alternates with watching Steel Magnolias.

2. Why is it OK for any politician (or their representatives) to openly lie to the american people? Stating your opinion is one thing but out and out lying has got to be illegal!”

Montanagramma replied on Sep 07, 2009 at 20:47:19

“Sadly, you are wrong. Oct 7, 2007 the USSupreme Court overturned some state laws that made it illegal to lie about your political opponent. So, the door was opened widely for lies to be told under free speech. Also, since corporations are now deemed "persons" they can legally lie too. No wonder we are so messed up. Most people don't even know that the lies are legal, so they believe them. What a mess, huh?”

Amazon's Perfect Mistake

Commented Sep 03, 2009 at 10:54:21 in Media

“OK, the Kindle mistake was stupid but there are ways around the problem. Some people read into the apology that Amazon won't do it again and others don't it's up to you...

Here is the apology.
----------------------------------------------------------------

"This is an apology for the way we previously handled illegally sold copies of 1984 and other novels on Kindle. Our "solution" to the problem was stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we've received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission.
With deep apology to our customers,

Jeff Bezos
Founder & CEO

How about offereing all the Kindle customers affected by this mistake a few free downloads to go with the apology?

*disclaimer,... I am not now, or am I likely to become a Kindle user so I have nothing to gain from this statement - I like the feel of a book in my hand*”

President Obama Will Likely Dump the Public Option, and Here's Why

Commented Aug 19, 2009 at 15:30:29 in Politics

“OK, my take for what it's worth...

There will be a public option, but it will be gutted and filled with so many loopholes we'll be able to feel the wind through it. Then, the politicians will fill it with so much pork and special interest money our great, great grandchildren will be born in debt.

All that matters it the politicians can stand up and crow about how wonderful they are and what they did for us.

Obama is just a politician who will (and has) say anything to get elected.”

Apple's Big Missed Opportunity?

Commented Aug 15, 2009 at 11:36:21 in Media

“I already use facebook and twitter through friendfeed and I am not interested on another one. Especially if it requires a glue interface like friendfeed to make it compatible with the others.

Your referencing the Addressbook is interesting but a great many iTunes users are on PCs and unless they are running Office the Addressbook there isn't as full featured and the Mac Addressbook.

Knowing how apple fights to keep iTunes closed I wonder if they would publish an API to allow access to the local and online message store. The api was one the the major features that helped Twitter take off beyond the SMS model. Think about how many people use the web page interface only, even my +70 year old mother uses a windows client to talk to her friends on Twitter.

And I really don't want a company that is selling me my hardware, music and movies to also be peeking at my messages. There is a serious privacy problem with one company having their fingers in so much of my stuff.

What if a greedy apple executive decided he could get a bigger bonus by allowing the movie or record companies access to the message stream? I'm sure they would love to know, filter and sell what is being said.

Oh, just to brag..

Letting the Banking Rats Out of the Bag

Commented Aug 12, 2009 at 19:17:29 in Business

“So maybe the 2 reasons the politicians handed wall street and the banks so much money is

1. They were bought and paid for and the bill is due.

2. They have investments that they want to protect. It's OK if we lose everything that's what we are here for.

They think we are idiots, and can prove it!

Only an idiot would keep believing their lies and stories. Well, we do and keep electing them!”

Boyaca replied on Aug 12, 2009 at 20:28:29

“Ofcourse you are right. It is just one big cozy club. I am not even sure of Obama any more. He sure is letting down the ordinary people who contributed to his campaigne and elected him. He is beginning to look like he has been bought and paid for by Corporate America. America is in trouble. It is rotten to the core, from the government on out. You need the French Solution. You know the Guillotine. Only have to lop off a few heads to get everyone's attention. A good use for the death penalty is not for murder. It should be for fraude and corruption of government officials. They do a hell of a lot more harm than murderers to society.”
