NY-23 Election Takes On Outsize Importance

NY-23 Election Takes On Outsize Importance

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 22:46:55 in Politics

“Nope, but there isn't much you can do...

Voting for a democrat or a republican that dives i the back pocket of the lobbyist and ignores the voters just doesn't seem like a winning option.

What are we suppose to do keep voting for the same parties and 'hope' that someday they'll magically wake up and care about the voters??”

strangelet replied on Nov 03, 2009 at 23:47:16

“Well, elections have real consequences. If you actually care about the consequences, you try to elect the best candidate with a plausible chance. If you just can't stand any (more often, either) of the candidates with a plausible chance, then I guess it makes sense to vote for "principle".

But, in such a case, you ought to realize that you are giving up your ability to influence the outcome.”

“What's not being said is they pay the capital gains rate of 15%.

When (or if) I get a raise or bonus it gets taxed as income. So should theirs!”

oldguru replied on Oct 21, 2009 at 15:52:51

“Yeah. The bottom line is that they probably don't pay capital gains anyway. It's only us retirees who have gotten killed in the market by the decline in our retirement savings and investments who pay capital gains..The only upside of this disaster is that I have enough losses to offset any capital gain that I MIGHT make for the rest of my life.”

Wealthy Families Lobby Against New Regulation

Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 13:28:52 in Business

“Nothing you say here matters.

The politicians are counting you you venting on forums like this and not following through!

Go to Congress.org and find your Congressional representatives and send them your views and opinions (be polite).

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt

Ask your representatives why some people are allowed to pay less than their fair share. Not only hedge fund manager but also all of those wall street bonuses are taxed as capital gains (~15%) but if we get a bonus its taxed as income!

Also, while we are at it let's make sure the members of congress are paying their fair share also.”

“Actually their getting these bonuses doesn't bother me if they have earned them.

What bothers me it that if I get a bonus it's taxed as income.

These guys get taxed at the much lower capital gains rate of around 15%!

How it that even remotely fair or honest???”

lonecrone replied on Oct 21, 2009 at 18:13:23

“How did they earn it? Does driving a business into the ground and ruining the finances of millions of people qualify as earning it? I guess if you measure it by how much profit it generated for the mega rich then according to the pigs at the trough who got our money, they earned it. But if you measure it by all those who lost everything, then how on earth can anyone say they earned it?”

“They can delete at will but only if you leave whispernet on. Most owners I've talked to shut it off as much as possible to extend the battery life.

And even though Amazon wants you to think they will benevolently keep your ebooks safe on their server I don't trust them and keep local backups of all of my Kindle purchases.

Or more likely they will start charging you to download your ebooks after the first time.

The point being, the Kindle is a great device but you don't have to drink the kool-ade and trust Amazon to do the right thing...”

“Well, there is the standard warranty and a extended warranty. I tend to take care of my stuff so I didn't buy the extended.

A woman I work with dropped hers and the edge go a little scuffed up and one of the next page buttons stopped working. She contacted Amazon and they had UPS drop a box off and with in a week she had a new unit at no charge.

Not sure how to answer the investment question. I guess it's a personal choice and the convenience is a big point with me.

Most of the books I buy have a print version cost much higher than $9.99 so the difference would have to be factored in. Also I can carry 100's of books with me if I want to...

I'm part of a closed Beta for a ebook manager for the Kindle that has really helped make it easy to manage and backup my ebooks. The nice thing is if Amazon decides to delete a book from my Kindle I can easily put it back on ad continue reading at the last updated location!”

“Yup, you need a light. The contrast isn't too bad and you can make the font bigger. I regularly read mine in subdued living room light ( 1 75-watt bulb across the room) while my wife watched TV.

M-Edge makes a series of covers that have a light built in.

By not having a LCD display you get weeks of reading before you have to recharge (if you shut Whispernet off). If you leave whispernet on you'll still get a week or so of reading before a recharge is needed.

The one rarely mentioned feature (??) is amazon lets you download the first chapter of any book to checkout before you actually buy the book.

And newspapers, magazines and blogs have a two week trial before you are charged!”

KarateKid replied on Oct 02, 2009 at 08:46:48

“How long do you estimate before you get your investment back? $300 + $9.99 per book v.s. buying the print book.........seems like you'll never recoup your investment.

Another question: what happens if your Kindle goes on the fritz? Do they repair it, and if they do, how much would it cost if it's out of warranty?”

It works well and if you shut off whispernet you can go weeks without having to recharge.

Now, the UI kind of sucks and it awkward to manage more than a few books but I found a great program to help me manage my Kindle content.

If Amazon decides to delete some content then I can put it right back on with the latest location, notes and bookmarks restored!”
