“Unless the Senate Rules have changed radically since I worked for a senator He does not have the privilege of deciding , the Democrats have, especially the majority leader which brings me to my main point; why is this man still in any power positions at all, did someone make campaigning for McCain a democratic plot!? Under Mike Mansfield he would have been out on his ear in 15 seconds flat!”

“How can he possibly deny his true profession without any hint of a smile or any sign of regret. I think his case ought to be front and center for any meaningful discussion on lobbying reform! He has become the poster boy for everything that has gone wrong in this congressional session. he has hijacked the Democratic majority and convinced them to take the payoffs rather than listen to their constituencies and has convinced many of them like Sen. Bacus that the money to be made on K street beats serving in the Senate. Bacus has lost 20% of his popularity in Montana but his personal wealth far exceeds that percentage. He no longer serves for the people only for himself, and unfortunately this is the common thread that goes through most of the "Blue Dogs" as they could care less about re-election , they are financially set for a very comfortable life!”

“War authorization is just that and now our troops, without counting the tens of thousands of US Mercenaries, outnumber the pitifully small number of Al Quidea 10:1! If you think the war authorization to invade Iraq was bad, and it was! This is just as stupid if not more so! The ghost of LBJ must be haunting the oval office there can be no other logical explanation, particularly when our own State Department emissaries in Afghanistan oppose this escalation! The only element missing is "The Domino Effect" argument! I am still waiting for an explanation of what it meant to WIN in Vietnam, now I have to double down and ask the next one term Democrat how does he spell VICTORY?! I am again at a loss why are Democratic presidents so afraid of Republican chicken hawks that they can't listen to the people!”

“OK; during the last presidential campaign much was said and many arguments presented that criticized then Senator Clinton for having voted for the war authorization . It is time now for LEADERSHIP! Clinton and Biden ought to resign in protest over this obscene combat escalation and it's budget busting implications. By so doing two things will be possible:
1) Call out all of the Republican chicken hawks that voted against the health care bill as " a HUGE BUDGET BUSTER! &
B) Set the stage for a second run at the Presidency by both Biden and Clinton as Obama has failed to lead on any issue from un-employment to heath care and now the stupid wars!”

“In the most egregious, outrageous, example of hypocrisy Senator McCain took center stage at a Phoenix "Town Hall" meeting (town hall is in quotes as you needed an invitation from the Arizona Republican party to attend) and railed against universal health care as expensive and adding to our national debt! He has yet to express any concern NONE WHAT SO EVER for the TRILLIONS of deficit dollars the Iraq-Afghanistan debacles are costing us! Harry Reid: 'I'm Not Using Reconciliation'

Commented Nov 20, 2009 at 09:16:57 in Politics

“Perhaps Sen. Reid is reading Mike mansfields play book. During the Civil Rights debates DixieCrats ( today's' NeoCon Republicans) were filibustering the bill very successfully! Sen. Mansfield called them into his office one by one, stripped them of all positions of power and then taught each one a history lesson. After Pearl Harbor there was only one dissenting vote against the declaration of war, Rep. Rankin (R )Montana based upon her pledge to "keep America out of foreign wars"! Operating under the impression it was more important to her re-election efforts to keep her promises she lost sight of the greater importance of history. She became a verb and was relegated to shame and humiliation that dogged her the rest of her life! Senator Mansfield warned each DixieCrat that they faced this same fate if they persisted !Harry must remind these Blue Dogs that there is a greater risk of being on the wrong end of a historical vote that far transcends an election! Beginning with Liebermann each one of the Senators that have publicly spoken out against the bill or support a filibuster ought to have 5 minuets in his office to rethink their opposition or leave stripped of all the committee assignments they had.”

LORISNJ replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 14:28:22

“I think that would fall under the heading of "arm twisting" and is no longer allowed in the Senate. Remember Tom Delay - that is what he did to get something passed - he held open the vote on the floor while he harranged the opposition within his party until he got the votes he wanted. He even threatened one Rep. that had a son running for office, Tom told the Rep if he didn't vote for the bill, his son would never get elected - he voted against it and his son was not elected.

You cannot do anything to "win" someones vote - you cannot offer anything, demand anything, or threaten punishment for anyones vote. The only thing you are allowed to do is debate the bill on the merits and hope for the best.”

“As the Democratic majority continues to show how inept they are at dealing with the Republican minority and whittle the public option down to a mere shadow of anything useful I hope that one of them will finally have the strength to step forward and publicly demand that the Republicans defend each and every outrageous insurance decision such as today's example of this little girl ! How can the Republicans possibly defend the decision that an operation to restore hearing "is not medically necessary"?? Each and every day a Democrat ought to stand in the well of the senate and recite one of this deplorable decisions and ask the Minority leader to comment, and MSNBC had better well cover it!”

Mickey7 replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 17:34:37

“I agree with your point about the ineffectiveness of the Dem majority, but the Republicans derive their hateful policies from their base--our fellow citizens--who believe the current cruel and appalling health care situation in this country is okay. How can this be? How can a large percentage of our neighbors, co-workers and 'friends' feel this sort of discrimination is not only okay, but preferable to allowing access to health care for all? I have had a boss tell me that insurance is a financial product based on shared, but equal risk. It was never meant for people like me with health issues and it 'is not fair' for others to have to pay for pre-existing conditions. Never mind the fact that everyone is one illness away from a pre-existing condition, this mindset is bizarre. I don't commit crimes, so it is 'unfair' to me to have to pay for criminal justice services. However, it is still my responsibility as a citizen to contribute to the health and safety of my community. This 'financial product' stuff is disturbing in the extreme and I think we need to confront the public espousing these views more assertively with the reality of their ugly position.”

“Here we go again! The Republican "Chicken hawks " parading around draped in American Flags criticizing any attempt at logical withdrawal as "cut and run' or surrender or appeasement, take your pick. The Republicans have nothing to lose as this war , as has become our military model, is being fought by poor young blacks, and underprivileged whites, a constituency that the Republicans will never attract in an election. Facing the possibility that the wealthy "contractors" ( mercenaries) that are making millions on war contracts, and who's support and votes the Republicans count on, may lose out if we stop the war will cause an uproar in both the U.S. Congress as well as the right wing media a PR campaign that Obama may feel he can not survive at this time with the health care bill and unemployment problems currently on the front burner! This is much the same situation the LBJ felt when he was facing this same right wing backlash over Vietnam. Every one of us by now ought to be writing our congressmen and insisting that if we are to deploy our entire Army ( and the 40,000 troops that General Pinocho, oooppps McCrystal has asked for will place every active duty troop into a war zone, than have these Republican s insist on a draft! Then we will know if their resolve is for country or just for profits!”

“Allowing states to "OPT OUT" is of very little consolation to those of us unfortunate to live in Arizona as we are completely at the mercy of Neocon Ideologes like Kyl, McCain and Brewer. For example at a recent town hall meeting in Phoenix when asked about the AARP endorsement of the Health care bill with the public option Mccain said that people ought to "tear up their AARP membership cards" That is the type of leadership we have in Arizona. With a predominantly elderly population and the lowest state in education our Republican leadership would opt out regardless of the adverse effects upon the public well being! The best hope we have here is to succeed from the union, fight the US Army, lose and then start to receive foreign aid! The disgusting stories detailing the nauseating abuses from insurance companies like those described in this article have absolutely no effect upon the likes of our Republican leaders NONE!”

“Empathy is the heart of American democracy and is the single most salient difference between the U. S. constitution and all forms of government that preceded it or was in power when we were established as an independent nation. The insurance companies and their financially dependent congressmen know this. they have been very successful in shifting the dialog toward obscure collateral arguments such as abortion, or the famous "death panels" in an effort to distract the majority from the fundamental truth HEALTH CARE IS A RIGHT and NOT A PRIVILEGE Every time an honest poll is taken 70+ % of us agree with a universal health care plan. Disgusting stories like this little innocent boy snap us all back to this fundamental truth!! ( in all honesty I am somewhat surprised that the insurance companies covered any of his operations as it is in truth a "pre existing condition" as he was born with it!)We must now hold our elected officials to do the right thing and hold true to our fundamental beliefs and that is government is a beneficial institution for the people and NOT THE ENEMY of us!”

“I was very privileged growing up next door to a true war hero. I had an absentee father but my next door neighbor kind of filled in. I was aware that he had been badly wounded in WWII and never, ever spoke about his battle experiences. My high school required a "Senior Paper' as part of graduation in the college prep. track. I decided to do some research into the cause and effect of WWII. ( look it might sound a little aggressive but I was 17 at the time OK?). I had a father and 7 uncles all serving in war zones in either the European, African or Pacific theaters so interviewing participants was a slam dunk, or so I thought. As it turned out few of them had any truly heroic tales I suddenly realized my project faced failure. My mother told me to ask my unassuming neighbor for help. Little did I know that hidden in his closet was a Silver Star a Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts and enough campaign ribbons to decorate a parade float. As a tank commander under Patton his experience would have been materiel enough to do a film to rival "Band of Brothers " but he only recalled his past to help out a kid that needed to graduate!”
