“Until I saw your post, I was going to write how Green's posture is more puritanical. Even to the point of mechanical. For Green it seems that just sitting on a table nude is some sort of erotic act. For all we know, she could simply just be getting dressed soon. Not so with Rampling. It's as if the photographer caught her in the act of something. Her whole body exudes a sensuousness. And nothing says this more than the glass of wine she is holding: she is carefree. Green, however, is hiding something: her arms are covering her breast in an unnatural pose, the glass behind her, her legs positioned as if hiding something still.

Ramplings legs are apart and she doesn't care that you notice. In fact, one leg is on the arm of the chair, the other is not. This is not a puritanical woman. She is confident in who she is.”

“You're the one who is thinking relatively here. Did you see those signs against Bush? I mean, seriously, they are heinous. And I say this as someone who protested against his policies, particularly the war in Iraq. Those signs that llfutrell linked to are calling for the death of Bush.

Most of the signs against Obama are, at worst, whacked out craziness and irrationality. They don't call for his death.

Perspective is needed here.”

“Why is Obama above reproach and political art dissent? Why is it racist to paint him as a joker?

How is it de-humanizing and degrading? The very nature of political protest is to use hyperbole to caricaturize the politician.”

“Please bother to read the story behind the creation of the artwork. Depicting President Bush as a chimp is a legitimate form of political protest through art. So is depicting President Obama as the Joker.”

“It was painted white in order to resemble Heath Ledger's Joker. There is a link under the photo of a Chicago resident, himself not white, and his artistic creation. Seems it was all okay and nobody said much until right-wingers and libertarians used it. Then all of a sudden it became racist.”

brainpower replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 18:18:29

brainpower replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 18:16:19

“When I first saw it, I didn't recognize it as a modern version of the Joker, I thought it was a play on "black face" makeup. The "artisitic creation" can only be properly interpreted it seems if you have knowledge of a single movie. No wonder it is easily misinterpreted.”

“The only problem is, is that Londoner and Parisians I know still call NYC the greatest city in the world. If they don't say it with their words, they definitely say it with their pocketbooks.

I'm also forever doomed to always get "its" and "it's" wrong. As a writer I come up against this stumbling block often.

And as for the singular of Phillies, well, I just wasn't sure. Of course, after I wrote it, I thought "I hope he doesn't think I'm comparing them to a horse!"”

Of course, that's always great when that happens. In my heart, I always hope that this year the Cubbies will finally get in to the World Series.

But people should stop begrudging a team because it exists in the largest market in the country and can afford the best players.”

“Please. Don't pretend that when you see a great player, you don't say to yourself that he should play on the Phillies. Take, for example, Ichiro, the greatest player in the game today.....you don't say to yourself, "He should be a Philly?"

And yes, for better or for worse, NY is the greatest city in the world. It also has the greatest contradictions: it's greatness is due to it's size; it's size is also a detraction.

It's greatness is due to all it's ethnicities: that also leads it to be a bit provincial.”

But you might get some arguments on the "greatest city" thing from London or Paris, or any number of other places. And in any case, it's in better taste not to say it all the time.

And the singular of "Phillies" is "Phillie," and the possessive of "it" is "its". :-P”

MichaelinPhilly replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 13:26:48

“Right. God forbid anything that's good should be located anywhere outside New York. That's the thing about New Yorkers that's so damned irritating. Can't you be happy with having the great city you have without always talking about how it's "the greatest (or "only") city in the world" and whining when someone else gets the occasional bone? (Real-life example: the WCBS anchor I once heard indignantly commenting on the decision to locate the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. "Cleveland? Cleveland? Why would anyone put something like that in Cleveland? It should be here." Or words to that effect.) Heck, just get over yourselves.”
