Dead Folks, 2009: The Missed and the Not Missed

Dead Folks, 2009: The Missed and the Not Missed

“Tallulah, if you had aspired to be Pope, then you'd have to swear a vow of celibacy. Somehow, I don't think that celibacy is up your alley!!

Enjoyed reading your latest blog, and I agree totally with your choices for the GRL!

Happy New Year!”

hp blogger Tallulah Morehead replied on Jan 04, 2010 at 16:18:35

“Celibacy is the first thing I'd throw out as Pope, and also all theat religion stuff would have to go. I'd keep the jewelry though, and that big gold-and-white gown he always wears.

But apparently being Catholic is a requirement ro be Pope. How unconstitutional! You know that Catholic "Anti-Defamation" League is always moaning about "discrimination" whenever anyone points out what a load of bull religion is, or takes them to task for their church's numerous crimes against thought and humanity, yet then they won't make a non-Catholic Pope. Sounds like discrimination to me! What a double-standard! Typical!!”

“Sorry, Tallulah, but I'm pretty sure that "Coach" will indeed be on the "Heroes vs. Villains" season coming in February. I'm not sure if I would call him a "villain"--a better description of "Coach" is "weirdo"! And I have no doubt that Russell H. will be on that season as well! If Shambles shows up, I wonder which side she'll be on??

Thank you again for your marvelous posts--happy holidays and I look forward to your "dead celebrities" year-end tribute!”

hp blogger Tallulah Morehead replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 21:50:04

“I wouldn't be surprised if Coach was a villain in the next season (he Can NOT be a"Hero!!!), but if your betting he's on it because he was in that promo, bear in mind, so was Richard Hatch, and there was a whole too-do contretempts, because Hatch'ss parole officers wouldn't let him go out of the country to do the show, so he will not be on the show.

It was all shot and in the can before the Samoan season even began airing, so they had no idea yet how Russell would go over, though it was clear from it's earliest promos that they knew they had a hot villain.

Shambles is too stupid to be a good villain, and she's no hero to me. Maybe if we ever have an all-gay version, closet cases vs out-and-proud, Shambles and Richard Hatch could have at each other. Or an all-dumb-bells season.

Merry, happy, and cheers!”

In the Spirit of the Season, Please Don't Be a Jerk at the Movies

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 17:38:21 in Entertainment

“Excellent post, Ms. Goff, but I fear that the individuals who are involved in the kind of behavior so well described will NOT for one minute believe that you are talking about THEM!! Therefore, cell phones and pagers will continue to go off in movie theaters, infants and small children will continue to scream, and people will arrive 5 or 10 minutes AFTER the movie starts!

Between the miscreants who treat a movie theater like it was their personal media room, the overpriced refreshments, and frankly, the not-so-great movies that are produced these days, it's no wonder that revenues are down for the movie industry. I used to go to the movies once a week; now, if I go to the movies three times a year, that's a lot!”

“Tallulah, it's the nature of that word-recognition software to do stuff such as you describe. I subscribe to a couple of news alerts at the NY Times, and the articles I'm alerted to are totally NOT what I'm interested in! However, because of the nature of the beast, I wind up getting alerts about the oddest things!

I'll miss your blogs after "Survivor" ends tomorrow night--when I've had a bad day, I read them and they cheer me up! I'm rooting for Russell to win it all--the guy is one of the best "Survivor" players ever!

Happy holidays to you, and I look forward to your posts when "Survivor" starts up again!!”

hp blogger Tallulah Morehead replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 19:10:18

“Yes, I understand how the word-recognition softwre works; I was just enjoying the irony. six months ago I wrote a column castigating Ayn Rand and THE FOUNTAINHEAD. Ads for disciples of Ayn Rand to celebrate her revolting work popped up attached to the column.

I won't be entirely gone. I'll be doing a year-end dead-celebrity wrap-up, hopefully not including me. (Side note to celebrities reading this: If you want to be included in my year-end dead-celebrity wrap-up, the "deadline" is December 30th. You MUST die and have your death reported by then or you won't make the cut. Time is running out for your time to run out. Don't be left out. Be sure and die early and often.) That column will probably run on either the first or the 4th of January, depending on how my New Year's Eve goes. The better the eve, the later the column.

I'll also be reviewing the Golden Globes, The SAG Awards, and so forth, so there may be a couple columns before SURVIVOR starts up again. The trick will be trying to wrap my head around SURVIVOR when the final season of LOST is airing. Who cares about who will win the next SURVIVOR when the fate of Jacob, Ben Linus, and all the handful left of survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 is finally to be decided and revealed?

But I have been informed that The Smoke Monster is afraid of Shambles!

Cheers.”

“I was at the football game that Joe mentions in his post--the fellow sitting a couple of rows in front of me had a battery-operated TV set and repeated to everyone in the area what Howard Cosell had announced to the nation. It took me back to that day in junior high when my science teacher was called away and came back to tell us what had happened in Dallas that day in November. And again, twice in high school, in April and June of 1968. Unfortunately, it seems like those kind of moments never stop occurring!

Most of the time I disagree with Joe Scarborough, but this was a nice post--thanks for sharing your thoughts on this sad anniversary, Joe!”

“None of this is terribly surprising to me; after all, the GOP circular firing squad started right after the 2008 elections. What I'm still waiting for is for some higher-up on the McCain campaign to publicly acknowledge what a monumentally idiotic move it was to choose this woman as a vice-presidential candidate WITHOUT vetting her, and KNOWING that with McCain's health history the "one heartbeat away' cliche could literally come true. And then we would have had someone as President who would make GWB look like a member of MENSA!!”

“As always, Tallulah, a terrific blog, and thanks for your "bon voyage" before my trip! Glad I came home in time for the merge! As for next week, if Russell wins individual immunity, I'm guessing that Shambles will be the next to go. Interesting that in the 19 seasons of "Survivor" no one seems to play the immunity idol at the right time; do you remember if anyone has ever done a "smart" play of the immunity idol? As you said, Russell is obviously not as smart as he thinks he is!”

hp blogger Tallulah Morehead replied on Nov 06, 2009 at 20:06:28

“I have seen it played well. One player once used it brilliantly to pull off a blindside. He deliberately goaded players into voting him out, hit them with the idol, and his real target went home on one or two votes. Sorry I don't remember who, but when these seasons are over, the players fade from my mind quickly. I'm always amazed by people who can rattle off player's names and plays from 8 or 9 seasons back. "Don't you remember when Bill from Vanuatu took that walk with Karen, to plot against Sylvester? You don't? Where were you?"

Ah, bon voyage.”

“Tallulah, I'm going to be missing "Survivor" and your marvelous blogs for the next two weeks--I'll be out of the country, but I'm setting my DVR so I'll be able to catch up when I get back! My question to you is: do you think the merge will happen during the next two weeks? I'm interested to see how Galu reacts to day-to-day living with Psycho Russell!”

hp blogger Tallulah Morehead replied on Oct 24, 2009 at 13:17:23

“I don't see how the merge can't happen in the next two weeks. If they'd gone ahead with their promised double evictions this week, it would have had to happen at this week's Tribal. Jeff Probst, in his blog this week, said they called off the double evictions to buck up people's spirits after Black Russell's collapse. (He's fine now, by the way, though still balding), but couldn't they have done the same thing by giving everyone pizza, and voting out Shambles?

If they hold off the merge much longer, they'll have a challenge were Zsa Zsa shows up, and it's ONLY Psycho Russell. "Galu, you have to sit out eight players."

You're going "out of the country." Someplace nice, like London, Rio, or EuroDisney, or someplace primitive and uncivilized, like South Carolina?

Bon Voyage.”

“You are absolutely right about Andrew hitting Louisiana as well as Florida. Unfortunately, since I was in South Florida, most of the media attention was on the destruction in Dade County, where I live, and of course, the power was out in most of the area for a considerable amount of time, so I missed the coverage of Andrew's hit on Louisiana. Regarding the slow federal response to Andrew, I remember the county emergency director holding a news conference two or three days after the hurricane hit and loudly wondering, "Where the hell is the cavalry?" (meaning FEMA and other federal agencies). As I said, the response was slow, but aid eventually arrived. And again, the mistakes by the Bush 41 administration in its handling of post-Andrew assistance pale in comparison to what happened in 2005 (heckuva job, Brownie!).”

“I live in South Florida and you are absolutely right about Bush 41's response to Hurricane Andrew--while it was not on the scale of the neglect by Bush 43 towards New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, I'm sure that later that year (1992) Bill Clinton got a lot more votes from South Florida as a result of the slow response of the federal government after Andrew!

Mayor Agnos, I was visiting Northern California at the time of the Loma Prieta quake, and I have to say that you and the other local officials responded wonderfully to the quake. I was in San Francisco five days after the quake, and while things were in no way "back to normal", it was obvious that there was a plan in place to both assist those in need and to get the infrastructure repaired (if possible) ASAP. I remember watching you on television, and your leadership, I'm sure, gave a lot of confidence to the people of San Francisco. Thanks for your thoughts on this anniversary!”

The whole idea of a democracy is for diverging, KNOWLEDGEABLE viewpoints to be heard in the government. “I'm a graduate of the University of Florida and a big fan of the Gators and Tim Tebow. I'm with the others who have posted here--an undefeated season and/or a national championship are in no way as important as is Tebow's health. The medical department at UF is first-rate and if it's determined that Tebow should not play at LSU next week, then that should be the final word. Concussions are not like sprained ankles or pulled hamstrings (let's remember what happened, unfortunately, to Natasha Richardson), and injuries to the head must heal completely before an athlete can resume his/her activities.”
