“MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)”

“Did that come from the campaign? I remembered a 'town hall' he did where an older African American woman said something like that and he just didn't seem to "get it"...to connect with her. I thought "Oh, no. He doesn't understand her life." I started to wonder what suffering he had connected with. It contrasted in my mind with that scene from "Primary Colors" where they've all had too much to drink at the bbq and start crying over "the mamas". It may have been a movie, but you had a good sense it was real.”

“The labor market is indeed rebounding more slowly than usual coming out of the 2001 recession. For example, during just two of the previous nine recoveries, the unemployment rate worsened for more than a year (14 and 16 months).

At 20 months through July 2003, the rise in the unemployment rate has persisted for unusually long. The weakness of employment is even more unusual. Employment has declined by 1% since the recession ended, and is still declining 20 months into the recovery.

The second largest decline in the post-war period was a 0.6% decline that lasted 11 months into the recovery from the 1990-1991 recession. Typically, employment rebounds within 3 months after a recession has ended.

“I would be curious to see how much of the employment market from 2001-2007 was tied directly or in the orbit of the real estate boom...

How many home builders, construction workers, mortgage brokers, etc...were inflating those job numbers”

NevadaPatriot replied on Aug 06, 2009 at 07:19:08

“This is because America does not have a manufacturing sector. Most all jobs have been offshored.

America is now a credit / debt economy with no savings and very little production.

As a result, there will not be many new jobs created anytime soon.”

“In 1981, Congress approved very large supply-side tax cuts, dramatically lowering marginal income-tax rates. In 1990 and 1993, by contrast, Congress raised marginal income-tax rates on the well off.

Despite the very different tax policies followed during these two decades, there was virtually no difference in real per-person economic growth in the 1980s and 1990s. Real per-person revenues, however, grew about twice as quickly in the 1990s, when taxes were increased, as in the 1980s, when taxes were cut.

Studies by the Congressional Budget Office, the Joint Committee on Taxation, and the Administration itself show that tax cuts do not come anywhere close to paying for themselves over the long term.
