Florida Early Voting Fiasco: Voters Wait For Hours At Polls As Rick Scott Refuses To Budge

Florida Early Voting Fiasco: Voters Wait For Hours At Polls As Rick Scott Refuses To Budge

Commented Nov 4, 2012 at 18:59:55 in Politics

“Florida's Governor Rick Scott has done everything he can to make it difficult for people to vote, including gerrymandering voting districts and shortening voting hours. He knows that working middle class Americans often need weekends to vote, and that they will vote against him, so he is deliberately trying to make it as difficult to vote as possible. However, Floridians have had enough of him and will stand in line to vote him and his cohorts out of office anyway.”

Financial Services Guy Uses Excel Spreadsheet For Match.com Dating

Commented Apr 18, 2012 at 12:11:01 in Business

“Ok so the guy is predisposed to organizing his search for a female life partner by using technology to coordinate his contacts, results, notes etc. Match users already use all types of computer algorithms and data storage and classification and other high tech programs. There is nothing creepy about taking it a step further, in fact Match could offer his decision making and sorting process as an additional option. Maybe he will find his female counterpart who also believes in organization and technology. The content of the note will reveal a lot about the person so making it public by believing anything published via email or any other manner on the Internet was probably a mistake. Microsoft now has another use for a spreadsheet besides crunching numbers.”

“this is actually a very basic and boring use of XL. Its like a big boring table. The most he can do with that list is sort and filter. Well, he did use validation, so he gets a point for that.

Now if he'd used macros and made a dashboard for each woman on their own sheets, that might have been impressive.”

Could Facebook's New Privacy Rules Endanger Your Kids?

Commented Oct 24, 2013 at 16:24:06 in Technology

“Kids under 13 should not be able to post private information publicly on FB or any other website without parental supervision and/or pre-screening and approval. There are too many predators out there watching social media and other types of internet postings to prey on teenagers. FB should not be capitalizing on the social relationships and interests of children or teenagers. It is too big a risk and potentially dangerous to kids, teenagers and also indirectly, their parents.”

House Republicans and the Betrayal of Democracy

Commented Oct 3, 2013 at 09:21:16 in Politics

“We live in a constitutionally governed democracy, but the GOP has apparently forgotten that and would rather not abide by democratic rules and laws that have been voted on and set into action by votes by the citizens they are sworn to represent, and by the legislative, judicial, and executive branches of our government in a fair and legal process. Every one who voted to shut down our government and ignore the due and legal process of our constitutional system should be immediately furloughed without pay, lose their jobs, be forcibly removed from their taxpayer funded positions and government offices and told never to come back. They are willfully and deliberately inflicting financial and personal harm on government workers and on all of us as US citizens just to get their own way. They need to be shown they are a minority and to stop this shutdown right now. Their behavior in any other organization would result in immediate reprimand and dismissal for failing miserably in their duties to their constituents. Why are these bums and leeches still in office. It is time to stop paying them, take away all their benefits, and throw them all out.”
Bungee-Jumping Over the Fiscal Cliff

Bungee-Jumping Over the Fiscal Cliff

Commented Nov 29, 2012 at 22:55:37 in Business

“If the Republicans refuse to agree to tax cuts on the wealthy and insist on cutting social security, medicare and other social programs taxpayers earned and paid for, then lets go over the cliff, the economy is on an upswing and will continue to grow after the initial panic on Wall Street but the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy cannot be allowed to continue if we are going to get serious about paying down the deficit. The Republicans agreed to the terms of the fiscal cliff with the idea that they would get something done in a Congress in terms of an agreement that they refuse to work out unless they get the cuts in so-called entitlements for the working class. Well we worked all our lives and paid into those programs and they are not on the table, and entitlement is a tax subsidy for those who earn over $250K per year and figure they should pay a lower tax rate than the average working person. They need to pony up and pay their fair share, and the House Republicans need do something besides try to obstruct every positive program President Obama comes up with and get with the program. Refuse to compromise, then shut up and take blame for the results.”

Drug War Slayings Snuffing Out News In Mexico

Commented May 4, 2012 at 21:06:05 in Media

“If it wasn't for the media, which get bashed all the time, no one would know about anything that happens except in their own back yard. These Journalists were brave hardworking men, some with families to support, who knew the risks but wanted the truth about these drug cartels and the related corruption in Mexico to be known. They paid with their lives, trying to earn a living and keep others informed. This is not just about drugs, it is about a form of tyranny and censorship trying to hide and distort and conceal the truth from the eyes and cameras and pens of a media that wants to keep them honest. Why can't the Mexican army take down these thugs, who operate with impunity and rule the country with their cowardly killings. As long as Americans continue to purchase and used illegal drugs funneled through the cartels in Mexico, you are complicit in these types of murders. Enjoy your high until the body bags start showing up in your back alleys and they come to get you or someone you know too.”

How to Ruin Your Life in 14 Minutes: Or Why We Need a Serious Conversation About the Ethics of Social Media

Commented Feb 26, 2012 at 21:31:04 in Media

“A very thoughtful commentary on the impact of social media on our lives. Privacy is not to be expected and if you post it on line it will remain there on some server, in some archive, likely be scanned by some type of surveillance program or used to build a database on you by marketers or whomever decides to amass databases on individuals and make money selling your information and profile to anyone they want to with our without your knowledge or permission. A great deal of good can be done by posting on social media but the expectation of privacy is an illusion and what you say or post on line is to be considered carefully because it is likely to have very real impact on your real or off line life as well. Social media is here to stay and it is only going to get more and more prevalent in our lives. Young people should be educated on the ramifications of what they post on line because we have all made impulsive or dumb statements or decisions when we were young, and it would be a shame to have bright, capable communicative young people ruin their lives by not thinking out the import or what they are posting when they hit send.”

“When giant US based corporations buy into and control the energy sector in Canada who do you think will control your domestic and economic and political destiny? It won't be the Parliament in Ottawa, or the Provincial governments. What kind of independent future do you think Canada will have then? Do you really want to be controlled by the corrupt lying oil grubbing politicians in the US Congress? Canada has abundant natural resources and the technical and scientific and technology to develop them without selling out to greedy international oil companies that have no loyalty to anything but their bottom line profits.”

“Real stock car racing was over years ago. The new cars are identical racing platforms and chassis with brand name body forms draped over them, but it still takes guts and skill to race three wide on the ovals and pass and draft, although the drafting is getting out of hand now that they form car trains. I'd like to see how well Danica Patrick can do, but it's unlikely that any male drivers will pair up to give her a "push" that will get her up into front row placement. She has what it takes to win some races from the good ol boys. The great stock car race drivers like Dan Gurney, Richard Petty, Parnelli Jones and A.J. Foyt ran big stock Ford Galaxies on tracks like Riverside Raceway that had hills and curves and manhandled those heavy cars around smoothly, tails hanging out right on the bumper of the car in front with consistent lines and lap times. They were pros that this new breed of race driver/publicity men can only try to emulate. NASCAR is fun to watch but stock car does't belong in the name now. The cars run engines from name brand manufacturers, but not much else. There is still excitement in NASCAR, it'll be interesting to see if fuel injection changes the races. It's too bad the fans who had the weekend off to go to the race have to watch on TV, but the weather is bigger than auto sports.”
