NSA Spying Has Tech Companies Worried About Their Most Precious Thing

Commented Dec 10, 2013 at 03:32:56 in Technology

“I sorta figured all along that the internet moguls were bothered by Obama's surveillance program(s) more from the standpoint of profit (loss of trade secrets, etc.) than from some Jeffersonian idea about individual liberty and privacy.”

Joana115 on Dec 10, 2013 at 05:59:25

“Of course they are. They are doing the same mining--and selling--of metadata. I think they are more concerned that NSA exposures might make people wake up to what these companies really do.”

“I'm not guaranteed a profit down here on my end of capitalism. You evidently missed the point I tried to make about Obama's market based ACA.”

Beatriz09 on Dec 4, 2013 at 10:23:01

“With all respect, I don't think so. Part of the left fears that Obamacare will increase insurers' profits, part of the right fears that Obamacare will cut them. The CBO has shown that none of both will happen. 33 million more customers increases insurers' revenues, but as the law also mandates them to spend 80% of those premiums on care, it puts a cap on their profits (which is PRECISELY the reason why big insurers such as Aetna are investing MILLIONS to try to get the law repealed).

In the meanwhile, just look at what's happening in CA, where the website is fonctioning well: already this morning a read a new post of someone who bought insurance on the exchanges, and is now getter much better coverage, all while paying HALF of what he paid before. THAT's the "profit" ordinary citizens get out of this.

“I heard on the radio that there's a provision in Obama's ACA which enables for-profit providers to adjust rates if they don't get enough profitable new customers. The health care industry is thereby assured a good return, no matter what happens. So in a sense it's socialized medicine, for wealthy investors anyway.”

ruburnt on Dec 4, 2013 at 00:24:57

“Yep..It appears as if Obama's handing out taxpayer money to subsidize the insurance industry that Obama and the Dems have been demonizing for years..Make any sense??”

Beatriz09 on Dec 4, 2013 at 00:20:43

“Obamacare mandates insurers to spend 80% of the premiums they receive on reimbursements. That means that if many sick people sign up and no young people (something that won't happen, as MA and now also California have already shown), then indeed, premiums on the exchanges (= where 15% of the American peolple will soon buy their insurance) will probably go up.

But that's NOT because it's "socialized medicine", it's precisely because Obamacare is entirely private sector based, and private insurers need to make profits, remember?
