How to Deal with Fox News

“May 31 of this year George Tiller, M.D. murdered. As you know from this site, Bill O'Reilly spoke out against him, calling him a murderer for years. It is reasonable to suppose that O'Reilly's campaign at least in part actually caused Dr. Tiller's death. Therefor, Fox is not toothless: when there is no reining-in of commentators who advocate violence (even if only in a subtle way), events such as outright murder are the inevitable result. I am not smiling.”

Help, My President Is Trying to Inspire My Children! A Parent's Desperate Series of Tweets

“If I were a kid, and I were forbidden to hear a speech, I would make SURE that I got a hold of said speech and carefully scrutinized it. Maybe the effect will be similar to banning a book! (You know, then everyone wants to read it...)”

Did Anyone Else Think The Newsweek Photo of Oprah Was Misogynistic? And Just Plain Dumb?

Commented Jun 09, 2009 at 18:47:37 in Media

“For an unflattering photo of a man, would you have written a similar column, calling it anti-male? Please, let's stop the nonsense. You sound like the right-wingers who complained about one of their politician's unflattering Newsweek cover.
Let's talk about something substantive. E.g., how Oprah endorses and gives a biased forum to wackos with no medical training (or doctors practicing non-evidence-based medicine) who give dangerous advice that will definitely result in an increase in severe illness and even death in children. She and her guests cannot give medical advice. Period. To claim they can is irresponsible journalism, and incredibly naive.
The evidence re vaccines and autism is overwhelmingly against a causative link. Refusing childhood vaccines could potentially cause catastrophic illness in children who could have otherwise led normal lives. Why do you think we developed them in the first place?
Kudos to Newsweek for bringing this abomination to the public eye. Oprah should realize that as this thing unfolds she may eventually be the target of a class action lawsuit brought by the parents who took her advice and lost their kids...
You should think twice before claiming qualifications to critically review medical evidence, unless you have medical degrees and have read the literature in peer-reviewed journals.
There are qualified, trained, physician-scientists out there, and they do their best to conduct solid research. Why are you and Oprah telling the public to ignore them?
A female M.D.”

“How many children in your practice developed autism? Because of your denialist response, you're every bit as responsible for the decline in vaccination uptake as members of the CDC and industry. Any rise in disease is on your hands as is the rise in autism. People who don't drink from a poisoned well aren't anti-water, just anti-poison. Tell the truth, clean up the vaccines, compensate victims and public trust might return.

Is this the evidence-based medicine you're talking about? http://www.fourteenstudies.com

“Typical arrogant doctor. Thinks she knows it all.

How dare we take responsibility for our own health and look outside her purview!

Problem is, mainstream medicine, because of its tight relationship with Big Pharma, is incredibly corrupt and people are catching on.

Thinking people don't trust doctors anymore. And if that means wading through the alternatives to find something that works, well, who can blame us?”

“funny piece, but it should be pointed out that there is no "Filipino", the main language of the Phillipines is Tagalog (Accent on the SECOND syllable)”

FogBelter replied on Dec 26, 2008 at 20:32:05

“I studied Pilipino in college, which was supposed to be the official language of the Philippines, but never really caught on. The Philippines has 170 languages including the dominant ones Tagalog, Cebuano, Kapampangan, Ilocano, Ilongo, Waray, Chavicano ... etc. The first President of the Philippine Commonwealth, Manuel Quezon, was from the Tagalog Region where Manila is, and therefore Tagalog became the most prominent official language. Had Ferdinand Marcos been the first President it would likely have been Ilocano, and if the Sergio Osmena was the first President it would likely had been Cebuano. I found that english, of some degree of proficiency, was spoken most everywhere I have visited in the Philippines when the local language wasn't in use.

In regards to the Moros, as a group they have never been conquered by either foreign invaders or Christian Filipinos of the north. The Spanish, American, and Japanese all reached a point of stalemate with the Moros ... that is why they still control a large portion of Mindanao today.

I once read where in the 1930's Manuel Quezon sent an emissary to Moroland to drum up support for Philippine Independence from the US. The meeting went well until the emissary ended his speech with a rousing "We are all Filipinos!" which enraged the Moros and caused the Emissary to run for his life to get away. The emissary was unaware that in the Moro language Filipino meant Slave.”

“Actually, the article said "Filipino languages". So, I am guessing that Mr. Thompson meant Tagolog along with all the other languages spoken in the Phillipines.”

Happy Holidays, New York.

“Anyone wishing more info on this issue, google Mike Leavitt's blog: I have read his statements and a couple hundred of the comments. Most of the public comments regarding this rule fall in one of two categories. One group of commentors pleads with Secretary Leavitt to not effectively reclassify routine birth control (and, in the bargain, hormonal treatment of disorders such as endometriosis) as abortion. The other group thanks him and pleads with him to protect practitioners from being forced to practice health care that goes against their conscience.
This regulation can be interpreted as classifying the birth control pill, as well as other methods of birth control, as abortion, in that if you are a health care provider and you believe the Pill = abortion, you now do not have to provide it.
There are already other legal safeguards to guarantee that a health care provider does not have to participate in an actual abortion in any way.
This regulation will result in many woman conceiving an unwanted child, and consequently obtaining an abortion.
This regulation will decrease access to care for women who need hormone therapy for non-reproductive-related diseases such as endometriosis.
As a physician myself, I would remind other practitioners that the patient comes first. The patient does not come after the patient's potentially or actually fertilized ovum. The patient does not come after your conscience. If your conscience conflicts with the best interest of the patient, you should not be a health care practitioner.”
