“Hee hee. That's a bit o' naughty there! I like! Seriously though, a politician is simply another human being being human. Go by their record, and as long as they aren't mutilating pets (budding psychopath), chasing male pages (under age), playing footsies in a public restroom (while claiming moral superiority), passing subjective laws for all (righteous conservatives), and they line up with ones idea of 'fair', vote for em.

The only other choice I can think of is to run ourselves. And I'm no more perfect then he.”

“@Flickwatcher I'm answering your 7:08 Reply , there's not a reply button on your reply. Why did I research religions? Because I was told by: well gosh, everyone (grew up in deep south), that there was a god and he loved me & everyone else very much. I had trouble reconciling what I was told by those I trusted with what I actually saw in the world: a newborn thrown in a dumpster by drunk parents, random deaths of people I knew via car accidents, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornado's, etc

And you're talking 'bout choice. The choice to 'sin'. That newborn had no choice. All he had was god to speak for him. Now seems to me god could have whispered in the ear of one of his so called spokesman on this planet..., "pssss.., Rev, go save that baby...", yet nothing. Yes the drunk parent had a choice but the newborn......., And again, brush up on your science. You're falling way behind. Your gay friend didn't choose to be gay. Either god made him that way or mother nature did so, right?

And IMO, if you have a friend that cheats on his wife, and you don't tell her, she could wind up with an STD or worse. I'm not going to say what I think of you if you don't tell her somehow. Talk about a sin.”

“Sure. Why not. Now that he knows he's not 'all that'. Perhaps he just wasn't sure before he sent the pics. IMHO there isn't any politician that doesn't have 'things' to hide as it takes a certain type of me, me, me, ego to want to be a politician to begin with, and they eventually tend to get caught up (read: strung up) by those same egos.

If that was the worst he has to hide, then go get em Anthony!”

Where was I? Oh yeah:

See what I did there? Science trumps ancient religious superstition yet again! Along with those 'common sense laws' are so called 'common sense thoughts'. A truth: Gays can't procreate. And for many straights, it also "feels" wrong. So hey, must be an abhorrent sin, right? See how common sense can break down?

Not such strange thoughts as a youngster, for you. Abortion, gay thoughts/actions, child molestation, marrying outside your race, daring false idol worship, were all held as equivalent sins. The so called 'good old days'.

Before that, slavery was Christian approved. Check. Whites superior to blacks. Still in force. Males superior over females. Still in force. And if the south had its druthers, slavery would be alive and well today, women would be barefoot, pregnant and quiet (quiet woman can't ya see men discusin' things here...), and cigarette smoke would be thick enough to swim through.

You find it strange, I see it as slow progress.”

“Nope. I grew up in the deep south surrounded by all its racist under and overtones (and the country music didn't help). I feel that's why I'm an agnostic, I'd researched the major western religions as a young dude and found them lacking. And I realize that humankind is but a blip on the cosmic scale and there will always be things out there we will never even think of asking about. Now your revered 10 commandments are themselves based on 'do unto others' which itself pre-dates organized religion. After all in order to survive, you would treat others as you want them to treat you. Common sense (sometimes) survival rules. And your so called 'law of god' is subjective (for one, which god?). As has occurred (and will continue to) throughout history, 'religious laws' need pruning like the dried up and dying vine it represents.

It is no longer blasphemous to think: The earth is not the center of the universe. Check. The earth isn't 6k years old. Check. No stoning for idol worship. Check. today: no death sentence for gay behavior. Why? It isn't a choice.

Flickwatcher on Jul 15, 2012 at 16:57:46

“When you researched other religions, did you want to find any to fit your lifestyle and found them lacking? Common sense comes from the soul, not from the developed brain that houses the soul......The god you worship is the god that occupies your thoughts, when choosing to do good or evil, according to the Law brought to life by Jesus.....There is idol worship today, even a program called "American Idol", yet no one is stoned, unless you live in certain Islamic countries.......All kinds of behavior involve choice: one chooses to kill, one chooses to steal, one chooses to love someone not his wife and yes, one chooses to sodomize another man. I have one friend who cheats on his wife and another who is a homosexual, but I love them both. They know how I feel about their behaviors though.”

“You know what. I believe all that. But is it because of say, a loving god or perhaps other factors such as..., the support system combined with oh lets say........., a much simpler outlook on life? That would equal less overall stress. That in itself seems simple enough. If you turn your life over to a 3rd party (in this case a god or God) what's to worry about? One can sin major or minor, beg forgiveness and wipe the etch-e-sketch clean. Free to sin again, and on and on. All and still have window seat in heaven reserved.

And from the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine Peter S. Millard, MD, PhD: http://www.jabfm.org/content/19/4/431.1.full

"Churchgoers are more likely to be employed, have intact families, and are less likely to be homebound by illness or disability. Until the "healthy attender effect" can be controlled for, it is unwise to attempt to make any inferences about the effect that churchgoing has on health."”

“That's great that you're fine as your minority will eventually get larger (huh?). Events such as the recession and the housing bubble popping is usually when religious fervour reaches an apex. That such hasn't happened should be a wake up call for contemplation on the various religious dogmas.

It's been my limited experience that people leave organised religion for at least a few reasons, not in any particular order: 1. They're hurting. They grew up either being hammered by dogma or gently indoctrinated by those they have no choice but to trust. Now something has happened to directly challenge those beliefs, and said beliefs are found wanting. 2. They had more doubts then most all along. These people probably didn't buy particular assorted tenants to begin with, they've matured and have moved on, not depending on their family to live vicariously through their lives. 3. They've transformed their organised religiosity to a personal spirituality.”

Life would be so much simpler for everyone to just believe as you. I can't. There needs to be a basis for belief in this spirit. More then just a typed smiley face, a hug, or even someone I trust saying its so because that's what they were taught by someone they trusted.

Life isn't simple.  And eternity is just a word.  Very few people (and that includes me) can conceive of the true immensity of this universe much less the concept of eternity.”

“Just how long is eternity? There's gonna be no physical body, so how do you KNOW that it would be an enjoyable existence? But wait you might say, you'll be in 'bliss' 'cause you'll be with God, is that right? An ethereal 'soul' , no 5 senses, floating 'round for eternity with the same other 'good souls', who just happen to belong ONLY to your particular brand of narrowly defined organized religion. Watching all the other poor saps, many not even aware your religion even existed, yet condemned to that hot place. For eternity.

That sounds pretty selfish to me.”

“Man is made of flesh and spirit. Even the plains Indians and the Neanderthals knew of the spirit. The spirit lives forever and flesh decays to dust. You believe whatrever whatever makes you feel comfortable, it matters not a whit to me, you are responsible for yourself through life's journey. But in the back of your their is something haunting you...Is there really a God? Will I really be held account for my life's action? Have a happy life and make preparations for eternity, whether you like it or not, accept or not, there is an eternity and it is for a long time. :)”

“1 outta 4 I would call criminal behavior. For me 'immoral' denotes specific religious teachings and doesn't work for me. See how subjective 'morality' is? Adultery is a legal term. If a couple have an open marriage (unlike myself), that's their biz. Being gay (as Opus Fideo brilliantly points out) ain't a choice. Abortion, well, this one may raise some hackles. I feel that a woman should control her own body, not some self righteous codger from on high. And last but-for-sure-not least, any fella that does a Sandusky should have their 'nads snipped.”

Flickwatcher on Jul 14, 2012 at 23:29:49

“I'm sure if you have lived a life on the left side of the tracks, then religious teachings wouldn't mean a thing to you. Adultery is not "just" a legal term, but is part of the foundation of laws that govern this country. If you don't follow any religion, but are least a part-time Biblical scholar, then you would recognize the origin of laws regarding this immoral behavior from the "Ten Commandments." If one were to pursue the thought, adultery can encompass homosexual behavior, being adultery against the Law of God......As to abortion, the body should control itself, we should not interrupt the natural process, but assist when the life of both mother and child are at stake.....Strange, when I was young, abortion and homosexual behavior were looked upon similarly as child molestation is today as something so horrible to fathom. The person who coined the phrase "the slippery slope" seems to have hit his mark.”

If an alien astronomer could see something as minuscule as Pluto transiting something as far away from Pluto and small (in general terms) as our star, he/she/it/they could probably determine its size and orbit, and know it wasn't swingin' 'round the sun in the same orbit as the so called traditional planets.

This is all assuming that 'they' used the same conceptual references that humans do. Which is doubtful.”

Here's my take on citizen united. If enough 'moderates' or 'independents' are dumb enough to be swayed by the multitude of crap ads the richies put out, then 'they' (as well as we unfortunately) get what they/we deserve. And there isn't much liberals can do about that. The majority of the population have an average IQ of 100. Ya think that would be enough. It's a given that extremely rich people want to hang on to everything they can, hey, that's probably why they are extremely rich. That includes the prim poodles on the supreme court.

Most of the extremely rich people are conservatives. Most of them also have fundamentalist leanings (at the minimum). They are gods warriors empowered by 'Him' to 'right' all the moral wrongs (which coincidently includes hanging on to their money/power).

No one was more shocked than I when Pres Obama won. I had this strange leakage coming from those twin orbs located on my face. Had to change shirts (just kiddin 'bout the shirt). Liberal and conservatives (notice I placed liberals first so I could capitalise it).
