Second Thoughts on the Obama Peace Prize

Commented Nov 29, 2009 at 18:39:13 in Politics

“I wonder if the people responding to my post even bothered to click on the link I supplied. There are ninety items on that list. Surely there must be one or two items on there that you think are progressive. I'm disapointed. I'm getting sick and tired of the comments I see on HP. I'm starting to think I should go to another site where where people aren't always looking at the negatives and not even considering the positives. No wonder the President is having so much trouble getting things accomplished.”

“I was not impressed with this list. There were too many lightweight measures or 'announcements' of plans to do this or that someday. Or things that required money - taxpayers money - for which we have none. I think they forgot the one thing I actually recall and that is finally getting a dog.”

“Gay men don't become transexuals usually. A transexual is a man or woman trapped in the wrong gendered body. A gay man or woman is attracted to the opposite sex. Though there are always exeptions and I'm no expert. I did have a friend was half way through the switch to becoming a woman. He wanted to become a woman so he could be a lesbian and have sex with other women. Maybe difficult to believe but true!”

ShakeYourComplacency replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 20:20:40

“Well, we all like to keep that dividing line between gays and transexuals, but in truth we know that gender, who you're attracted to, how you self-identify, concepts such as masculinity and femininity, role-playing, are all closely related and complex.

As to your experience with your friend, I too had a friend who was a man, who was definitely attracted to women, however felt close to lesbians and I think if he could wave a wand would be a lesbian and have sex with other women. And I don't think this is all that as uncommon as we think. I think identity and attraction are complex.”

“To quote a line from the article: "would serve a rude awakening to investors who for years assumed that the conservative Abu Dhabi provided a safety net for its racier neighbor".Markets run on psychology as much as fundamentals. The global recovery so far has been tepid at best. When the news first broke on Wed. the US market dropped. Monday will show what effect this might have on our market after it opens. I don't know how much US banks have invested over there but I'm guessing it's a lot. Dubai also throws suspicion on the financial health of the middle eastern oil rich countries.”

“What about all that shrimp that's caught in Asia. It's hot there and the shrimp can sit out in the sun for hours. They spray it with some chemicals to get rid of the smell and then freeze it and send it off to the USA. I refuse to buy shrimp unless it's domestic. And I absolutely won't eat it at one of the huge chain restaurants (Red Lobst@r). One other thing .... try to avoid shrimp caught in the Gulf of Mexico... it's filthy.”

“I so AGREE with you. I miss Princess Diana right now. If she were alive she'd have really spoken up and probably gotten us to sign. I admired her for standing up for the innocents who lost limbs and life because of the indiscriminate maiming and deaths caused by land mines.”

onwardsandupwards replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 14:42:51

“Agreed 100%.

Thanks to the patronage of Princess Diana, the issue of landmines had become front page news, almost daily, and in every country in the world.

I truly believe that - if she had been able to continue in her role as educator - landmines would not be in use today.

I REALLY do believe that.”

“Oh. ok..... then people with contrary oppinions should give up their real vote to support someone they don't really want to appease one of the two parties. Right. Some democracy.”

standard replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 07:46:26

“To avoid that result, we'd have to abolish the Senate (which represents states equally, not people democratically), abolish or circumvent the Electoral College (to elect our Presidents by popular vote), and institute proportional representation of parties in the House of Representatives. Unless and until we do that, then: yes, that's what we're stuck with, like it or not. But don't shoot the messenger and don't blame the modern major parties: blame the compromises that went into drafting the Constitution in the 1780's.”

“Not really. The Supreme Court decided that along with what's her name in Florida- a republican- in charge of the recount. This is still a democracy. I'll vote for the candidate I feel is the best qualified and not for someone because of peer, or party affiliation. That's the Republican way and not mine and it shouldn't be the way for a Democrat to vote either.”

standard replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 05:01:07

“Yes, really: Pat15 stated matters correctly. The Supreme Court would never have had a vote, but for Nader's run. There were other factors in play, but none more debilitating and decisive than pointless, unrepentant Mr. Nader.

Those who chose not to support major party candidates in national elections held under our current, flawed electoral system must recognize that they'll have no positive impact on national issues, in consequence. It's an approach they really ought to rethink.”

SlurmsMcKenzie replied on Nov 27, 2009 at 21:35:05

Paper, Scissors, Plymouth Rock

Commented Nov 27, 2009 at 06:00:54 in Politics

“I think one main reason the Pilgrims get most of the credit is geographic. Boston and New York City are in the the north east. They became the largest population centers with industry, commerce, trade as well as cultural centers. These cities became the gateways to the west so the story of the Pilgrims was easily diseminated throughout the country. This is one case of majority rule. (that's my oppinion anyway.”
