Sun-Times, Journal Sentinel Sign Printing Agreement

Sun-Times, Journal Sentinel Sign Printing Agreement

Commented Sep 22, 2009 at 13:32:42 in Media

“This is clearly a way to shirk the union printers in Chicago. By heading to Wisconsin to print, and not keeping their presses running here, the union jobs are shipped off. The Sun-Times is running a game on the unions, and this is just another in a long number of those games. It is sad, it is shameful. It is wrong. For some crazy reason, the Sun Times thinks that by shipping off 70 jobs (not many) they're really going to save their publication? Doubtful.

They would do better to stop printing the paper edition altogether, and going full-digital; then COMMIT TO RETRAIN every one of those 70 people, and COMMIT to either re-hire them or pay for job placement with full benefits in the mean time. That would be the right thing to do...but S-T doesn't care about doing the right thing.”

Chi-Town Daily News Abandoning Non-Profit Model In Shakeup

“I was saddened to learn about the halt in newsroom
operations for the not-for-profit website ChiTownDailyNews.org.

ChiTownDailyNews.org is a valued and highly-capable member of the
Chicago journalism community. Arguably they have broken more original
community news stories than most of their competition combined. As a
resource for our community, the editorial and reporting team there
have a level of professionalism which matches or exceeds many other
sources in The Windy City.

We should provide any sort of assistance that Geoff and his
team suggest will be helpful. Certainly, it is my hope, as it is of many colleagues in Chicago's social media and Journalism community; to see ChiTownDailyNews.org re-emerge rapidly
under their new for-profit business model. Accordingly, we look
forward to assisting them in providing options for gainful employment
and utilization for their entire team. That team needs to keep
covering our city and its diverse neighborhoods, communities, and
issues; and it is hoped that the members of The Chicago MediaHub
Project and wsRadioChicago.com's future team will join with me in
offering support as Geoff and his team work through this difficult
problem as they rebuild.

Sincerely,

“I for one am relieved to learn that my Congresswoman ISN'T interested in just "moving up the ladder." Its refreshing that she wants to keep doing her current job REALLY WELL instead.

“Way to go Jon! I'd bring my mom too! Of course, I'd have to have 3 tickets, because Tim and my mom would demand it so they could walk around evaluating people's outfits and attitudes together. Its so nice to have a partner who gets along with my 'mere.'

Helen Thomas Returns To White House To Harass Obama (VIDEO)

Helen Thomas Returns To White House To Harass Obama (VIDEO)

“When I was a young cub staffer who had just arrived in Washington, one of the first people I came to admire in my new DC neighborhood was none other than Helen Thomas. Funny enough, I would run into Ms. Thomas and fellow "icon of feminism" Betty Friedan at the grocery store of all places.

Little did either of these ladies know at the time that I considered each of them to be true giants in my mind. To this day, both ladies, unassuming in their private roles as DC residents; publicly execute their public roles as Lionesses of truth, social justice, and above all--intelligence, in ways that few other people in that town can even aspire to achieve.

Later on when I came to know each lady professionally, I was often blown away at their power and sheer toughness. Ms. Thomas in particular was always a force to be reckoned with, and every EOP and EOVP staffer knew that if she was asking...you'd better have an answer or know who did...and get them to her FAST. Always the consummate professional, Ms. Thomas played the hardest of hardball when it came to doing her job as the Grande Dame of the WH Press Corps.

Hopefully the new Press Secretary (are you paying attention, Mr. Gibbs?) will return Helen to her rightful place as the first questioner of the Commander In Chief's Press Corps.

“I'm wondering, Scott, if you and I used to play hockey together way back when. I knew a fellow goalie who went on to become a DC correspondent.

If you played hockey at Navesink, give a shout.”
