The Fall of the Berlin Wall: Between Justice and the Cliché, We Must Choose Justice

Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 15:13:13 in World

“All this hyperventilation about the Berlin Wall when in these times we have Israel and the US have been building ugly walls--one in occupied Palestine, the other on the US Mexican Border-- based on Fear, arrogance and apartheid by those who have power and wish to dominate their neighbors. The Mexicans can justly say that the border lands and all the way up to California were stolen from them and of course the Palestinians can say the same about Israel stealing the whole of Palestine.”

Wall Street Has a Gambling Problem

Commented Oct 31, 2009 at 22:19:35 in Politics

“Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, Tim Geitner, Alan Greenspan, Bill Clinton, Phil Graham--there are the prime culprits for what has happened--they abolished the Glass-Steagal regulation preventing Banks from trading stocks on Wall Street.”

“Add in the Commodities Modernization Act of 2000, wriiten by Enron lawyers, handed off to Cindy Graham, who passed it on to her husband Republican Senator Phil Graham. This allowed wild speculation in the commodities markets and also forbade restrictions on credit default swaps. It became legalized robbery out of the pockets of everyone who bought gas, bread, electricity, et cet. That bas##@* Graham would have become McCain's Secretary of the Treasury . Graham's fingerprints were all over the Graham-Leach-Bliley Act which effectively cancelled the Glass-Steagall restrictions on banks being involved in other business.”

Even if he gets the public option, the overwhelming majority of Americans will be stuck in a for profit, private insurance system without out of control medical costs and drug prices.

The Democrats won't do anything meaningful on health care until the uninsured start taking over hospitals and the CEOs of insurance companies can't get a good night sleep because of throngs of demonstaters outside their castles.”

“Israel has, with US connivance, violated more than 68 UN resolutions against taking over Palestinians' land, not to mention the many almost unanimous UN resolutions that were vetoed by the US. For more than 40 years Israel has expanded settlements while giving lip service to Peace. Jews around the world should realize that Israel has become a disgrace to all humane values that Jews used to be associated with by emulating the lebensraum and other ethnic cleansing and genocidal policies against Palestinians that were used by the Nazis against Jews. Israel may get its way as long as it has US support but Israel is accumulating a lot of bad KARMA. It may take a while--even hundreds of years, but sooner or later a new Exodus of the Europeans who forced their way into Palestine in 1948, is inevitable..”

“Ahhhh, the UN? The UN and it's 47 Muslim-majority nation members who work hard to block any resolutions concerning Human Rights violations their own member nations have commited . You really think anyone with a minimal knowledge of world affairs or History believes that anything going on in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is worst than what has happened or is happening in Africa, Asia and the Middle-East (where OIC members are located)? Go take a look at casualties and costs of regional conflicts in those regions for the past 60 years. Go check out the names of the members of the OIC and their records. Please, name one member of the OIC whose "humane values" are better than Israel's. If bad Karma had anything to do with anything, the aboslute majority of these nations would have ceased to exist long ago.”

Too many drugs are a "one-size-fits-all" based test on populations and may not be right, either in dosage or in applicability, to a particular individual. As a 20 year recurrent-cancer survivor who chose to take an "alternative" route to treating myself, I am happy that I did not follow standard advice of several oncologists but informed myself of alternatives through personal investigation and writing to people outside the US. If we would take responsibility for our own health and not just take on faith whatever the medical profession tells us--most of them are too busy to keep up with new developments, we would be more healthy as a nation.”

The Diary: Traveling to Jerusalem

Commented Jul 31, 2009 at 00:09:10 in World

“I recommend reading the book Jerusalem 1913 by Amy Dockser Marcus, a former Wall Street Journal reporter. It is a very balanced and good account of a time in the city when Jews, Christians and Arabs lived mostly peacefully and how the Zionist push into Palestine led to the conflict. That is why the book is subtitled The Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Too many folks twist history and ignore the people who lived in and took care of that land for centuries. Also you may want to look up the website and books of Israel Shamir, a Russian Poet who was a Jew and served in the Israeli army but now writes and speaks out on what has been happening in Palestine-Israel.for a long time.”

"I don't think this country will ever go for an entirely government-run health care system, nor that such a system is necessarily best in any case. (Just imagine if, down the road, we got a super-conservative government in charge of a federally run health care monopoly. None of us women would be able to get coverage for birth control! I must credit an author whose name I forget, whom I heard on NPR this morning, for pointing out how a single-payer system could be taken over by political concerns.) But a system that makes all private health care providers function as non-profits, and also offers government-run options, might work better than the shareholder/expensive CEOs-driven private system we have now. "There could be some serious fall-out when the American public discovers that the proposed

The cooperatives as currently proposed would provide no Medicare-like fall back position, and all of this will cost about $1 trillion. [538] The current proposal is not a pig in a poke – it's pure pork for the health insurance industry. However, we do have an object lesson here. Members of Congress who want to support the insurance industry are far more concerned with what health care reform will cost the Treasury of the United States, and far less concerned with what failing to reform health care will cost the economy of the United States and the people who make that economy grow.

as reported by John Paul Roberts on July 1, "The same week that “our” government in Washington told the Governor of California “not one red cent,” President Barak Obama handed over $2.775 billion to Israel.
Online Journal (June 29) reported that the handover to Israel of the unemployed Americans’ tax dollars took place in a “tiny Capitol room” to which members of the press were denied access. I mean, really, who wants the media writing about US taxpayer dollars for Israel’s nuclear weapons while Americans are being kicked out of their homes. Not that, of course, the “Christian” supporters of Israel would mind".."California, which has become a failed state, has been denied bailout money from Washington. More Attacks on Prevention and Its Role in Health Reform That Make No Sense

Commented Jun 28, 2009 at 20:30:43 in Politics

“Amy,
I suggest you and the others here read "The Cost Conundrum" by Dr. Atul Gawande in The New Yorker of June I, 2009 or just Google it. You will learn some truths about what really drives health care costs-----the current approach to reimbursement of health care providers!”

AmyTuteurMD replied on Jun 29, 2009 at 00:18:33

“I've read Gawande's article and it has nothing to do with what we are discussing. The issue is very simple: does the scientific and actuarial data show that preventive cares saves money in the aggregate and the answer is no.

Expanding access to healthcare is an incredibly important goal and it's not going to happen if we are not honest about the fact that it will cost money. Pretending that preventive care can pay for it is foolish and helps no one.”
