The War Over Math and Reading

“Completely true! We see that SO MUCH today. Girls are much more able at a young age to sit still. So look - oh, what's that? your little boy is much too young to be asked to sit still in kindergarten (since we keep pushing curriculum down)? - let's put him on drugs! because most of the children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD are boys...and the drugs are being pushed on them.

AND look at that! who is earning the most advanced degrees in this country? Why it's about 55% women...hmmmm....”

“You must not have been around much then. yes, he got into big trouble. So rather than having a national conversation, he was booted from office, never to be heard from, and we didn't have a national conversation, and kept with the status quo.

Yes - he is CORRECT. Men and women learn differently. No question about it. The reality is that STEM courses are typically taught in a way that men learn more easily. So --- the women aren't as good at it , because it's not taught as well for them.

(---personal note: have a master's degree in applied mathematics).”

“we HAVE been focusing on the bottom. FOR DECADES. What is it doing? Well, thankfully it *is* makign that bottom a tiny bit better (worth the resources? for someone else to decide).
But in that time, we have been completely ignoring the top. Completely.
My kids are absolutely bored in class. Oh, they're learning all right. But what are they learning? They are learning that everything is easy. They are learning that without much effort, the teacher is happy. That they don't have to do much and they'll be fine. That if they shrug things off and don't do their best, it doesn't matter.
(can you tell I'll be taking them out of school soon enough?).”

“of course it *is* possible. It is not possible using the federal government we have, nor using the state govts we have. It's not working.”

“Data? Um, how about when I took my engineering graphics in college - I was one of 3 or 4 girls in the class. The teacher clearly didn't think that girls should be engineers. We had to partner with others in the class for certain projects, and my partner rarely showed up - and it was clear I did all the work by myself. That was the way I passed - it was apparent the teacher didn't think that I had the ability to do any of the work, even with a partner, but then it was clear that I knew what I was doing.

I do think that boys and girls learn differently. And math and science- even now, is mostly taught by men for men. So the women who *do* end up succeeding are the very tippy top of the %ile in ability - because they can learn it any such way.

In my graduating class of math majors - I suspect 1/2 of us were women, if that means anything.”

“um, do you think that after raising 10s of millions of dollars for the library, it should no longer be called the paterno library? just curious. He didn't want that statue up there, though, that is pretty clear in anything you read about it.”

“It really doesn't matter if the library Paterno paid for cost 100's of millions of dollars...there is no price tag for covering up child rape.”

“I think Penn is going to be paying out tens of millions of dollars if not hundreds of millions to the many, many victims IMO. Do you think if Paterno would have "manned up" ten years ago there would have been as many victims that Penn will be paying off? I can guarantee that 10 million will be "chump change" by comparison. Also, if 10 million is all it takes to buy off that university it's a small time school IMO and no great loss to shut it down IMO. PSU (pedophilia enabler state u?), IMO. Seriously?”
