“Are you stating that our nobel troops put in a half a....s effort for 7 years. Note as well that Gates, Mullen, Petraeus and McChrystal are still the same players from the Bush Administration, and you expect different results? HAAHAAAHAAA!
Again, the point is, not to escalate and then get trapped there. What you don't understand is that even if Obama sets a date, he will in the end be pressured to move that goal post again, and again and again!!
So the best thing for him is NOT TO TRUST BUSH'S PEOPLE! Draw down, don't escalate troops and don't intensify combat.”

“And so, you would have us escalate in Afghanistan and risk the lives of thousands of civilians there when combat intensifies? Huh?
We just need to draw this down. The mistake is not in leaving. The mistake is provoking more and more conflict. We've done some terrible things in the past 8 years. We can expect not to pay some price whether we stay and intensify combat or risk leaving. We will pay a price one way or another, but the more damage we do the higher the price!
We must leave and not get more embroiled and dig a deeper hole.”

“The deadline doesn't even hold water with people in his administration, nevery mind the military. It's laughable.
Everyone knows this is bogus and that a deadline can't be imposed at this time since this escalation could have unpredictable consequences, so unpredictable in fact that the forces might end up in Waziristan, Pakistan. So please stop with the naivité.”

“Not setting a deadline is ridiculous. We have tried that. Seven years later we are still there. Everyone needs to know that this is it. The Generals are on board with the plan. Stabilize, train and get out. If the Taliban wants to lie low for two years thats fine. They can then deal with the forces we have trained. All we can do is put forth a honest effort by giving the resources that are needed. We can not stay there forever.
Your plan to just leave is irresponsible for many reasons, but putting in a half a$$ effort for 7 years then just saying oh, well we quit would make us the laughing stock of the World. Even sadder it would have those who lost loved ones over there asking why?”

This is just laughable. And one more thing, you should be reading some opinions as to why this is a terrible idea, because that excuse doesn't hold water.”

“The other day I wrote that I expected the withdrawal date ( which apparently became July 2011) to be a moving goal post. The closer we'd get the farther it moves.
Doc, you stated the date was not locked in. Uh-uh, the Whitehouse actually locked in that date, and nobody's buying it. Not even the people who are part of the Administration. They're in the "uncomfortable" position of trying to get around the question without giving away that this date is based strictly on political expediency.
Everything about this escalation stinks!”

“I can't agree with you on this one, skialethia. I am completely against this conflict and its escalation, you know that, but in combat you put the soldier's lives MORE in danger if you announce an end date. Why not just give them a blueprint for what we are going to do? I feel we've ALREADY given them too much information, i.e. where the emphasis will be, when we will begin withdrawing.....you NEVER give the enemy an chance to fill the void and to time it.”
bilmardre replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 09:15:31
“What stinks is the 7 years that we have been dithering in Afghanistan wasting lives, money and time instead of resourcing it correctly and getting the job done. The President made a difficult decision a couple days ago. The situation in Afghanistan has been going on for 7 years, it did not start a couple days ago.
You should have been complaining 7 years ago, not waiting for President Obama to make a difficult decision which really had no good solutions.”
