“i don't feel in the least bit sorry for them. they've hurt so many people with their meddling in politics. they are busy directing their organizations, none of which appear in the top donors PAC list because they are smart enough to hide their money in "dark money" donations to 501(c)(4) groups, to buy local elections in communities where they will never live.   they are doing this because they know that the change they want, namely the transformation of this country into their own private plantation, has to be achieved with a two-pronged approach which includes unlimited money to buy the media, and getting people to vote against their own interest.   that cognitive dissonance has served the right well up to now, but people are starting to catch on.   let's just hope it's not too little too late in the pushback.”

New Survey Suggests Science & Religion Are Compatible, But Scientists Have Their Doubts

Commented Mar 17, 2014 at 16:21:35 in Science

“"Science challenges religion both by refuting cherished dogmas, and by dismissing revelation and religious experience as legitimate sources of knowledge." This quote from the article is one I don't agree with. It makes it sound as if science is attacking religion but that isn't true. Science is looking at the Cosmos ( I don't mean to sound grandiose here) and trying to understand it from what is observed. If it can't be observed, or detected in some manner, it's is beyond science. The only conflict is when any religion feels threatened by reality and reacts. Science is neutral with regard to belief.”

TheWM on Mar 19, 2014 at 10:05:13

“"The only conflict is when any religion feels threatened by reality and reacts." Yeah, and that hardly ever happens, does it? No, wait -- it happens constantly. And also, I don't know whether you're right about science remaining neutral. Let's face it, the term "science" is defined much more broadly by some people than by others.”

“There isn't much collateral damage with a semiautomatic.

And you DO realize that the only difference between an "assault weapon" and a regular rifle is just a short list of cosmetic features that do absolutely nothing to make the weapon more dangerous than one without them, right?

Banning a gun for stupid cosmetic features that do nothing to enhance the lethality of the gun makes about as much sense as banning cars for being painted a certain color or having a spoiler or air dams.”

“That sounds like every kind of 'bigotry' in the world. Tout your own merits. Don't belittle 'theirs'. Science cannot be "adulterated". But it CAN be compared to someone's accepted model, so that it can be given a context, and it's accuracy and value can be appreciated first-hand. If nothing else, perhaps showing people the standards of the "paranormal" will help to wean them from the "supernatural"... :)”

“This simulation seems to show that both feet on the same side will be off the ground and in motion at the same time. Does this mean the animal wobbled from side to side when it walked?”

Why So Seriousss on Nov 1, 2013 at 00:57:29

“Also... there is a slight wobble shown in the simulation.”

Why So Seriousss on Nov 1, 2013 at 00:56:38

“probably. That would explain the shift of weight. That's one huge creature.”

FranklinCat on Nov 1, 2013 at 00:29:21

“Watch the video again, you'll see the spinal column tilt away and then tilt towards you as it walks.”

phoenixx1 on Oct 31, 2013 at 17:37:57

“The movement you are referring to is called a pace, meaning a 2 beat lateral gait. The animal uses its weight distribution evenly from side to side, shifting to the left as both the left front & left hind leave the ground to propel the animal forward, then immediately to the right with its body weight shifting in rhythm to a forward right limb movement. Many large animals move this way as it is easier for them, elephants, giraffes, camels, llamas etc., even some horses are specifically bred to attain speed at a pace.
A diagonal gait is what we see in our dogs, cats, most horses, cattle etc. In it the opposite limbs work in tandem to balance the animals weight in quarters, left front-right rear, right front-left rear. This gait puts more stress on the animals tendons, ligaments & skeletal system as they have to balance opposite body mass to achieve forward movement. In some movements, photos show one leg down (for a split second) bearing the animals weight before other follow in tandem. I would have been surprised if an immense animal such as this did anything other then pace.”

CoastalCowboy on Oct 31, 2013 at 17:36:09

“I'll go one step further and say, I strongly doubt that this massive creature lifted both legs on the same side of its body at the same time. As far as I know, all quadrupeds lift two opposite side legs (one front and one back) at the same time, otherwise the subject would immediately tip to that side before a step could even be taken. If they model a frontal view of the creature walking, this would be far more apparent. As far as I can tell, this model defies the laws of physics.

Also: "...a specialist in high-performance computing and engineering simulation at the University of Manchester..." Really?!! This guy needs to go see a Pixar or Disney 3D animated movie, might humble him a bit.”

Liberal2 on Oct 31, 2013 at 15:47:03

“Actually, the wobble would have a forward vector in it. When humans walk we fall slightly to the side but more to the front. A side ward wobble could be controlled by a shift of the center of gravity over the supporting legs...but I doubt that's the case. Although it's inefficient in the abstract, it may be the best option for a creature that big.”

TYRANNASAURUS on Oct 31, 2013 at 12:03:49

“LOLOLOLOL...I love simlodons and am sorry they are no longer around but I notice we don't WOBBLE with one foot off the ground...so what would necessary be the reason 2 feet on the same side off the ground would need to wobble?”

Me atlast on Oct 31, 2013 at 11:23:23

“It doesn't seem likely to me that it would have both feet off the ground on one side, of course I'm no dinosaur expert. It just doesn't seem like that would be stable for an animal of such mass.”

Jamie Kowalski on Oct 31, 2013 at 11:09:54

“I was just looking at some footage of elephants walking, and it's actually very similar to that, though the elephants did seem to lead slightly with the hind leg.”

Angel1999 on Oct 31, 2013 at 10:58:27

“I was noticing the same thing, and I suspect that is exactly what it did. I assume the program is capable of keeping track of weight balances and gravity, which would imply a weight shift from one side to the other.”
