“Alright, then how about Barney Frank having a weaker record on trans rights than Salt Lake City? She's had the representative on her show a few times and continually failed to mention trans-exclusion on the Employment Non Discrimination Act, even when discussing ENDA, DOMA, and DADT. Rachel's awesome on a lot of things, but like a lot of cisgendered gay rights activists, she doesn't have a very good track record on the last two letters of GLBT.”

mexico-marijuana illegal
denmark-marijuana legal

In which place do you find drug wars occurring?”

Alan Papacito replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 23:09:39

“Not exactly true. Mexico just relaxed their marijuana laws for the very explicit reason of reducing their problem with home grown drug cartels. And 95% of the drug cartel problems (aka the drug war) is due to our enormous consumption of this illegal substance in the U.S. Should it be illegal? Not my call, but as a controlled substance, I don't see this being any more dangerous than alcohol. It has been been demonized and highly mis-characterized (you lie!!) by the conservative right (many of whom have their own coping drug of choice -- Alcohol).”

Alan Papacito replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 23:02:47

“Right, and if he agreed with the snot-nosed student (who apparently has taken creativity and rebelliousness to extremes with his hair style) he would be excoriated by you and every one else who b*i*t*c*h*e*s no matter which fork in the road Obama chooses.

I'd rather have a POTUS who goes "all professor" on the country rather than someone who wears his anti-intellectualism like a badge of honor. Sure Shrub may have been preferable for going out for a beer, but I don't want a knee slapping every man running our country (into the ground).”

“Aren't you embarrassed by this exchange?
Why does Portia even have to explain why she want the same rights as the other people on the stage?

Anyone making the argument that this is just about semantics is either uniformed or intentionally deceptive. Even Portia and Ellen and married couples in Massachusetts are still denied federal marriage rights. The choice isn't between marriage or full civil unions- only a handful of states have civil unions, and many others have banned them along with marriage, like in texas.”

docallen001 replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 05:30:48

“I am waiting for some cases to wind through the courts that end up with rulings that banning civil unions is unconstitutional. Of course there are 5 RCs on the Supreme Court (4 conservatives and one conservative leaning), but since the Repubs made such a big deal of the lastest Justice not letting her personal opinions impact her rulings, that does not present an issue.”

MrBurlesk replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 19:32:17

“Having morons like Hasselbeck on the show spreading ignorance gives comfort and validation to those who think like her. She (and the the Christian nutcase) need to be booted off the show and replaced with progressives. The viewing audience wants controversy for ratings, though. The famous "Survivor" bug-eater (with little else worthy of note on her resume) provides that. She's screechy, arrogant, blond, pretty, and all the things conservative women aspire to. But she's a huge embarrassment to the show and to mankind.”

slobone replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 19:15:29

“No, it's good that Elizabeth asked that question, because it allows Portia to explain it for a lot of View viewers who may have been wondering the same thing. They didn't really "clash", in spite of the usual Huffpo headline exaggeration.

And let's face it, there are a lot a lot of people out there who still have to be sold on the idea of same-sex marriage, as recent election returns and the vote in New York prove. I thought Portia did a terrific job of making the case.”

Bernard Marx replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 19:01:58

“I get what you're saying, but if one assumes that civil unions could be strenghtened to give them equal status to marriage, this might be a faster road to equal rights than one which brings in a lot of religious hysteria.

As someone whose worked on human rights issues in South Asia, I have seen plenty of cases were it is pragmatic to compromise on an absolutist position as a means to getting legal equality. Once civil unions have the same legal status as marriages pushing for a more absolutist postition is fine. But I would have thought that the most important goal was equal rights.

In theory there's no reason why they can't be granted equal status in the law, whicvh wuld then make it a smeantic and cultural issues rather than a legal one.”

Idea1013 replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 19:01:35

“True. Then again, Texas technically banned all marriage.
