“My views of Republicans have been shaped through the trauma of the beginning of the 21st century, a new century that we all hoped would usher in a new age of peace and prosperity.
You and your Republican party made sure that this didn't happen, and we spent the first three years wondering if WWIII was about to start. We then watched as Republicans silenced the debate on climate change, alienated all our friends and allies, and made our country an object of hatred around the world. Then the next few years we spent waiting for the inevitable financial meltdown thanks to gross mismanagement of the economy.
I'm not ready to forgive Republicans for any of this yet.”

“Bigotry against Republicans?
Come on! You can't change your skin color. You can't change your sexual orientation or gender. But you can change your political affiliation in an instant.
Being a Republican is not something you were born with. You made a choice to support an irrational and damaging political ideology. It's not bigotry to criticize a Republican for his lack of vision, greed, belligerence, intolerance, fear-mongering, small-mindedness and xenophobia. It's an absolute necessity.”

You have a view of Republicans that is extremely negative and do not accept that many might not fit your view. This is even when presented with evidence which defies your personal view of Republicans, like Tisei. That is bigotry.”

“The Republican party is not what it was. This is not Eisenhower's Republican party, nor Lincoln's. Today's Republican party serves the interests of corporations against the interests of the people, it stands in the way of equality and social justice, and it is anti-science. It is essentially a religious nationalist party, which is fundamentally unable to engage in today's complex issues because of its rigid black and white ideology. It is the party of incompetence, irrationality, xenophobia, greed, and belligerence.

“I feel safe to say you are wrong on this. There are people in the Republican party that fit your description. Yet there are many who do not. The problem is that people want to lump all Republicans into the most repugnant sub-group they can find in the party, which is usually the neo/theo conservatives.
Right now as evidenced in the news, there is a battle going on amongst Republicans to redefine who they are. Which means... the neo/theo conservatism of the last decade was not to the liking of many Republicans. Many people see tea partiers as the same as them for example, but most teapartiers are the opposite, supporting smaller government, wanting our troops to come home and backing lgbt rights.
It is easy to generalize but I think when you get any party (including democrats) to be that large, you arent going to have everyone in it fit one generic negative description.”

“Instead of handouts, how about providing free cooking classes to all citizens? Surely, if the poor were taught how to cook rice, beans, meat and vegetables they would eat well and save money.
I'm positive that the cause of hunger in the US has far more to do with our convenience food culture than anything else. Our Mexican neighbors eat better than us, despite our best efforts to export our unhealthy processed foods and corn syrup enriched products, and the average wage in Mexico is just 7 dollars a day.
Mexicans still know how to turn staple food stuffs into tasty meals to feed a large family. Americans simply don't know how. They need to be shown.”

“If Obama proposed throwing water on a burning child, there would be 40 Senators who would oppose it on the grounds that it would lead to a government take-over on charitable giving. There would be five or six senators on the Democratic side who would threaten to join the Republican filibuster unless the water used in the dousing of the child were the bottled water of their major campaign donors.
Fox News would be handing out effigies of the burning child made-up as the Joker, while Glen Beck would be crying about how this child burning is an inevitable consequence of Obama's Marxist policies.
Meanwhile the child would burn to death, and everyone would blame Obama.
Welcome to America!”

It can be pretty frustrating to have a guy like that having to schmooze with the kind of low life Republicans who wouldn't vote to throw water on a burning child if Obama had thought of it first.
One tends to think that if Obama would just take the easy path, and steamroller his ideas over congress for the good of the the people, how much better things might be.
But they wouldn't be really, because it would be the Republican way of doing things. The best thing about Obama, is that every criticism of him from the right is absolute, certifiable BS. The filthiest, most treacherous lies of an inbred and dysfunctional mind that it is possible to have.
At least that makes me feel slightly better about myself, if not my country.”

The great thing about food, as far as they're concerned, is that it's practically impossible to prove a health problem is caused by any one food product, or that minute quantities of carcinogens and heavy metals in the food the industry serves us pose any long term risk.
It's getting to the point that the only way to be sure is to avoid any kind of processed food. Easier said than done.”

Under Bush, under Republican misrule, world leadership was lost. No one wanted to follow someone as inarticulate and arrogant as Bush and his cabal.
That loss of trust will take more than a few months to recover from. But it is abundantly clear that Obama is as well liked around the world as Bush was despised.
When you consider how profound this change is, when you really take stock at the thousands of millions of people whose attitude to the US has changed as a result of Obama being elected as POTUS, then this award is well deserved.”

“On the one hand I admire Chavez for doing so much for the poor of Venezuela... there's no doubt that when he first came to power, the enormous wealth of Venezuelan resources was bypassing the majority of Venezuelans for the empowerment of the few.
But since then, Chavez has aligned himself with the worst of the worst. Ahmajinedad and Mugabe to name but two. How can one have faith in the good intentions of someone who calls people like these friends?
Clearly, Chavez is not what he may appear to be. If he were to have come out and say that the Iranian government stole the election, or that Mugabe had driven his country into poverty by unjustly persecuting whites, then I'd still be on his side.
But the fact is that he's another one of those ideologues who ruins everything by not being truthful.”

“muppet, Chavez's duty is to do what is necessary for the good of his people, it's why they elected him. By praising those with whom he is about to enter into business deals is only common sense. Ahmajinedad may not be liked by wealthy businessmen of the U.S. but what they like has no bearing on how Chavez run's his household, anymore than me telling you how to run your household. Mugabe's intentions may be well but his method of not leaving any of the white farmers who legitimately knew how to run large farm operations hurt him. As a result Mugabe's country is in dire need of agricultural products such as corn, sorghum, beans. Those agricultural products are part of the ALBA program that Chavez, and other country leaders, have adopted to ameliorate the negative effects of NAFTA and also as a strategy to move away from oil dependency and to diversify their economy. Just as America is run by wealthy, corporate owning, rich people, so are other countries and the media loves to mislead the public into thinking that policies and legislation is done if the presidents "like" each other and isn't done if they don't. Quite simplistic in my view.”

Obama: Time for 'bickering' is over on health care
Commented Sep 09, 2009 at 12:16:47 in Politics
“Obama has done exactly the right thing.
He's let congress work on a healthcare plan (or several of them) and allow a long debate on the issue. This is in contrast to what Bill and Hilary did in the 90s.
Now, that every possible argument for and against has been heard, and opponents of healthcare reform have been allowed to make themselves look foolish, Obama can now start steering this in a direction to get some meaningful outcome.
There's a lot of good stuff in Max Baucus's plan. It doesn't have the public option that liberals including myself want, but it will still change healthcare in the US for the better. At least you'll be able to buy a health insurance plan and not have to worry about whether it will actually cover you when you need it, and without bankrupting you. That's a 100000% improvement on the existing system.
Getting the public option would be the icing on the cake. It would literally transform US healthcare, bringing costs down while taking us slowly but inevitably towards universal coverage. Maybe we won't get that from this president, but that's not his fault. It's not his fault that there are practically no moderate Republicans left in the Senate who might have voted for reform.”
