“I hope you're right about him "playing it down" to get it passed. I want to believe that. But I also think the public option, if there is one, should be for everybody that wants to buy into it, not just the poor. That will lower the costs significantly and make it a truly robust program.”

“I hope my guess about that is right too. I'm one of the fortunate few with cadillac insurance.
I still want a public option because I believe it's the right way for our nation to deal with healthcare. And if I'm able to switch, I will.”

“He didn't say it was just for the poor, what he said that only 5% of the public would probably purchase it.
If the public option only takes the very poor and the un-insurable, then it can't pay for itself. You need the healthy or the people that use the doctor less.
Which brings me back full circle, that the best way to spread the risk, which brings down costs, is a Universal Plan.”

“I want him to say he won't sign any bill that doesn't include a strong public option.”

“Just because he didn't say it doesn't mean he's dropping it. He's made a case for the public option to be part of larger reforms which are needed as well.
As for no spine ... were you watching the same speech? He spoke directly to the hateful republican fear-mongers who've been rending this nation one community at a time ... and told them to stop. How is that not having a spine???”

“Had such high hopes that Obama might grow a spine tonight and lay down the law to both republicans and democrats. But, aside from the personal stories, he said nothing new, nothing he hasn't said for a month. And again, he spoke about the public option as if it was expendable. It is not. It is the only thing that will create true health care reform. The other parts of the bills are simply insurance reform. Someone pointed out recently that what we really need is single payer - that the public option "IS" the compromise. Without the public option, billions of dollars will be funneled into the existing insurance companies, which are the problem! And four years before an affordable system is in place! And it may or may not include a public option! What's that about? I thought we were in for real change after the election. But Obama has turned out to be just another suit. Think about this. If Bush had proposed all of the exact same healthcare changes as Obama, and handled the issue the same way, and gave the speech we all heard tonight, I think most of us would be furious.”
gallimaufry03 replied on Sep 09, 2009 at 23:15:54
“I disagree with much of what you say but I do agree with the 4 year wait issue. One of the talking heads said tonight that it was about cost cutting -- that the slower you introduce something the less expensive it is. That doesn't make sense to me but I'm not an economist. I think something is needed now and if that's the "gap" thing he said was mccain's idea, okay.
I don't agree that a public option is the only thing that will create true health reform. I have said that if they enact a plan without it, I will not vote for him again. The pre-existing conditions and not getting dropped when/if you get sick are huge; they probably either directly affect or potentially affect as many people as who have nothing at all.
What he said about the public option ... in my opinion ... was very good: that we need it for those people who can't get anything else, and that it will be a competition to companies now. That's entirely valid and he stated it with such conviction -- and a very strong moral basis for it -- that I now believe it's important to him.
Consider this: what if he couched it the way he did to de-emphasize it enough that we can get it passed? We have made it a huge deal -- and the rightwingnuts have pushed back to a ludicrously stupid degree.
Maybe he's trying to play it down to”

“Mika was excellent when the Morning Joe thing first started--clear headed, matching Joe and the guests word for word with both skill and intellect. Since around the Iowa caucus she has gone down hill exponentially. I still watch the show to torture myself (I'm full of self-loathing), but I wish I didn't. It's just a group of pompous male windbags shouting over each other with Mika babbling in the background incoherently. Her worst offense, aside from the insecure babbling, is that she doesn't do her homework. She no in-depth knowledge of the issues.”

“What a great insight. Thank you. And special thanks to the president-elect for, once again, taking a position on this issue that would have never occurred to most of us, but that was strategically brilliant. Barack kept the pieces in play, for now he will probably get an extra vote on certain key issues, and he can deal with Joe later, if Joe's own sour karma doesn't catch up with him first. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am loving trying to re-adjust my brain to having a new president that has the ability to think three and four steps ahead.”

What Jon Stewart recently said about Obama applies to you, your words have actually matched my perceptions of reality. What a precious thing, that shouldn't be precious or uncommon at all. Obama has people drawing up plans to close Gitmo. He's had dozens of advisors planning which Bush executive orders to undo asap. Does it get better than this? This is above and beyond my expectations for Barack. He's got our back. He is my president, our president, and damn that feels good to say.”

“Beautiful thoughts, Bob. Today was the first day in eight years I didn't dread getting out of bed. I woke up happy and felt light as a feather. Not quite as giddy as Scrooge at the end of A Christmas Carol (The Alistair Simms version), but happy. I only have one thing to say, and it's not based on your article, but on some of the thoughts below. One big favor we could do for the rest of the world is to stop talking about how great the US is. About how we're the greatest country in the world. It's become an element of nearly every political conversation these days. Look, like religious faith, pride in one's country is a wonderful thing to have and to feel. But when we continually talk about how we're the greatest, it just becomes obnoxious. Let's vow to be proud and humble. The election of Barack was magnificent, but let's not forget we have a lot of other things, right now, to be humble about. Let's stop being the loudmouth in the plaid jacket at the party.”

“Please. Nobody relax yet. I'm in Pennsylvania, which is pivotal in this election. And I got about 15 Republican robocalls over the two day weekend and only one from Obama. The TV ads were also about 10-to-1 for McCain. Obama may have under-spent here in the final days. And Reverend Wright was in all of the ads which, though not sponsored by McCain were sponsored by a Republican PAC. James Carvelle was correct when he said that Philly and Pittsburgh were one thing, but everything else in Pennsylvania is Alabama. I'm worried about McCain's (and the GOP's and the PAC's) last minute spending here. I'll relax the second after McCain concedes the election, and not a second sooner. Don't forget, the Deibold machines are still out there. There are also far too many suspicious voting machine problems out there which are creating discouraging long lines, which may cause a lot of people to give up and go home (the elderly, those who have to get to work, etc.). As of Sunday, Obama was ahead here by 7.3%. That can change really quickly if McCain successfully pinches the racist nerve endings of this state.”
