“They set-up a system to prevent the lunatic-fringe from taking over... they firmly understood that Big Gov. is evil and personal responsibility is key. So by today's standards they'd be Conservative.

They also would be against going another $ Trillion+ in debit for a Gov. run wasteful dangerous program like Obama-Nancy-Harry Care.”

“Agreed. Tax cuts followed by tax cuts joined by endless war and deregulation at all costs are the way to go. It works every time. Oh, that and electing people that profess to hate "big government" to run "big government". That does the trick every time too. GO CALIFORNIA!!!”

Philclock replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 01:37:07

“Very astute how's you know? Kennedy's tax cuts worked excellently despite Vietnam war; only brought down by LBJ's spending billions on Great Society. Reagan tax cuts same, despite mini-downturn after Gulf War: Clinton rode its coattails for 8 yrs. Bush tax cuts worked, caught at the end by too much spending and credit crash; Obama and Dems making it a crunch, with huge spending, no tax relief and government stifling new lending.

Democrats profess to hate big government? Wow, THAT's an interesting take on California, even for Democrats.”

Prisoners in jail have better healthcare than their spouses and children on the "outside" now.

If I could pay 17% of my income and know my claim could not be denied or policy arbitrarily rescinded, I'd call that a bargain.”

smpj replied on Nov 12, 2009 at 19:02:24

“True. But we should do something that bends the cost curve in a direction that we can afford. Other countries have found ways. The current proposals do nothing to help long term . If something is passed that cannot be paid for, then who, other than those rich enough to afford their own care, will not be at the mercy of disease or mental illness?”

“I remember when all the "thinking conservatives" were worried about deficit spending at a time of war joined with a massive tax cut for the rich followed by another massive tax cut for the rich followed by 2 (TWO) stimulus handouts in 2008. They were everywhere...jumping up and down, screaming even! Where's all this money coming from!?!

Oh, wait that never happened. The fact that the CBO is indicating this will SAVE 10 BILLION DOLLARS per annum is peripheral nonsense to "thinking conservatives". It would be funny if it weren't so hypocritical and meant the death of another 3,600 Americans this month and the next and the next...”

conservative-mindset replied on Nov 12, 2009 at 19:01:16

“Who says I was a fun of the Bush administration? Who says I'm a fan of the Republicans currently in office? Your assumptions are ill based and for the most part false. A majority of real conservatives were against the bail outs in the Bush years as they are against them these days. And, for the record, the CBO stated that the Polosi plan will do nothing of the sort in reducing/saving us money, in fact, the report said quite the opposite.

I'm also interested to see where you guys are finding 3,600 people dieing every month because of lack of health care insurance. You clowns are probably including terminal cancer, car accidents, murder, and anything else you can garner to falsify your claims.”

smpj replied on Nov 12, 2009 at 18:32:29

“The issue of deficits has been given lip service for years. Both Dems & Republicans admonished each other for creating them - and both were right to do so. But now the landscape has been radically changed. The deficit spending is reaching critical mass under those now in power. Everyone responsible can see that the enormity of what's being spent and that which is projected to be spent is going to be ruinous. The Republicans have been guilty of making the situation bad. The Democrats are guilty of making the situation dangerously worse. Cooler heads will prevail next year and any politician in even the most loosely described swing districts and states who promotes higher taxes and larger deficits will very likely have their head handed to them in the next election.”

“Just because ER's are jammed doesn't mean anyone there has the right to healthcare. I do think the government would do a better job. Kinda like the military. You agree we have an excellent military, don't you? Strongest, best in the world and all that? That's what I want for our collective healthcare. Not wealthcare for those that can afford coverage. Not scare-tactic based inaction. Real, honest to goodness takin' care of each other. Imagine.”

“My kid does not have the right to see a doctor. Neither does yours. Try it. Assert your right to healthcare next time you go to the hospital or doctors office.

Ever been bankrupt due to medical bills that you thought you paid your insurance company to cover, tough guy?

Ever had a claim denied? Ever had a pre-existing condition foisted around your neck like a financial anchor?

What was it I was supposed to ask my neighbor again? Aw forget it. I ask them to support the movement that helps us all take care of each other and not health insurance company profits. You ask your neighbors to pay your bills. Good luck with that.”

denverguy replied on Oct 15, 2009 at 15:40:01

“But you do have the right to see a doctor - just pull into any hospital emergency room and check it out. But don't ask me to pay for your bill, which is what Single Payer is doing.

If you don't think that health care costs will rise with the "open door" policy that Single Payer will cause, you're sorely mistaken. Plus, you'll do so without the benefit of strong negotiations by insurance company contracting departments.

All of this will happen with the cost shift to the average taxpayer!

Do you really think the at the HHS will not have to triple in size and have lifetime career service positions created? If you like the attitude of the average DMV person, you will love the attitude of other career service positions who have ultimate responsiblity for your health care.

I like that my insurance company negotiates with my doctor and hospital to keep costs down with contracted rates. I don't think the government would do a better job - do you??

Good luck!”

“Good question. It comes from percentage of premiums collected diverted to actual health care treatment. In the case of the average health insurance company, they divert %40 to administration, while Medicare, for example, diverts %2-3 percent to administration costs.”

“"Health insurer profits"? If that phrase doesn't tick you off in the first place, you're not paying close enough attention - given the fact that most of these companies are registered as "non-profit". You seem like a smart guy, though. You know how you calculate profits, right? It's what's left after a review of p&l's less salary, marketing, administration, etc. The CEO of UNH reports a salary of $1.3 million/yr. There is no report of bonuses, options, etc. Ever wonder why these monopolies bother spending millions on advertising and marketing in states where they have %100 protected market share? I do.

I don't know what the "legitimate reforms that could happen in healthcare" means. But minimizing the deaths of nearly as many people killed on 9/11 EVERY MONTH to a made up fraction and linking it to jaywalking is beyond the pale.”

JHawkKC replied on Oct 15, 2009 at 14:41:58

“Your kids have the right to see a doctor right now. Everyone does. What you want is for someone else to pay the bill after your kids see the doctor. Why don't you just go ask your neighbors right now if they will pay the bill, it will be cheaper for them to pay it now than when the government takes it over.”

“Why is it laughable if you don't disagree with everything in the post? Of course it costs money. Of course prices will rise. Did you even read the article? They're protected monopolies profiting from fear and producing nothing but profits while 3,700/month die without access to healthcare. Get it, now?”

marcsmith68 replied on Oct 15, 2009 at 13:48:49

“I do disagree with most everything in the post. Have you ever looked at health insurer profits? They are not high. Go to google finance, look at UNH scroll down and see the net income margin with all the comps. Average a little over 3%. I don't see that as much profit. At that level of profit, they don't need anti-trust protection, I can't imagine very much capital is fighting to get into this industry.

I don't know where your 3,700/month figures comes from, but assuming it's correct, that's 0.001% of the population every month. We probably lose more people to jaywalking accidents every month. Is this the eye-opening fact I'm supposed to get?

There are legitimate reforms that could happen in healthcare. But this guys post just flames the fires of anti-business, anti-corporate sentiment that is sadly over-taking many people thinking these days.”

I believe Thomas Jefferson said that those who seek to sacrifice liberty for freedom deserve neither. Think about that, the man was right. We are getting what we deserve, in fact what we have demanded. If you are too afraid to take it to the streets you really don't deserve any change.”
