“i read The Audacity of Hope while on a trip to Italy last October, as the market was tanking and the election neared. Being out of the country as I read made it more remarkable as I made my way through Constitutional thought from Barack Obama. I couldn't wait to get home and vote. There are a lot of hideous remarks on this post from people who make America a mean place.”

“I'm just saying when you say "pro-life" you've fallen into a linguistic trap of the anti-abortion's phrase book. They're anti-abortion.”

because this is a control issue and nothing more, it isn't really about abortion at all, its about a woman's right to choose

Responsible sexuality contains an element of moral responsibility. One knows it is impossible to keep kids out of each others' pants - but education and guidance can lead not only to safe practice, but to also respect for each other and for the physical act as part of a meaningful relationship - not merely recreation.
Of course there are going to be experimentation, completely irresponsible flings, abuses of every kind. But good education provenly reduces these. That is not "virginal fantasy." It's just fact.”

“I have no idea why my father died of pancreatic cancer. He lived right, didn't eat crap, exercised modestly (was still going out for a leisurely bike ride in his '70s.) He was told he had six months to live after complaining of a weird back pain. He did NOT make lifestyle choices to have caused this, Dr. Weill. We are still asking "why?"”

“Population statistics are the issue. Tragedies like your father's are truly as unpredicatable as they are unpreventable. What the author wants to address is the obvious reduction in the statistical effects of policies focused on prevention. In the context of your tragedy, why do I not smoke? Why do I not ride a motorcycle on rainy days without a helmet?
All it takes is a walk through any mall with your eyes open to see the inevitable demise of any medical system, public or private, in the next 10 -15 years. The number of chronically obese citizens in their 30's to 50's equates to a statistically higher percentage of extremely high cost cases of diabetes, heart disease, and knee and hip issues. This is no different than the ubiquitous smoking epidemic of the 50's and 60's correlating to lung cancer.
The government tobacco policies of the 50's and 60's are no different than current policies, for instance agricultural subsidies which provide dirt cheap sugar, oil, and red meat products. The health detriments are obvious and the costs to the producers and distributors are 100% externalized.”

“How does Dr. Weil propose to deal with the disagreable fact of death, which is absolutely predictable. Blaming "lifestyle choices" for illnesses of old age seems kind of, well, stupid.
"Preventive medicine" is a method for assigning blame for illness, relieving medical professionals of any responsibility for actually treating patients.”

No, President Obama; We Should NOT Shut Up About Health Care Reform
Commented Jul 06, 2009 at 20:30:10 in Politics
“You did not read correctly. The writer had a job before WITH NO HEALTH INSURANCE! typical in California, where 55% of businesses do not provide health insurance for employees. You have no idea whatsoever what it means to be an entrepreneur or freelancer. You are probably someone else's employee. Republicans would call this under any other circumstance, a nanny situation. Great, get your insurance from your nanny/daddy/boss. The rest of us deserve health insurance, too. We work, we pay taxes. If we ALL had access to health care by paying into a huge pool, this argument wouldn't even be relevant.”
HerCabinBoy replied on Jul 06, 2009 at 22:46:41
“Well, you asked for it. Looks like you didn't read that BOTH HIM AND HIS WIFE HAVE PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS !!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! !!!!! They made choices which resulted in their health care being dependent on the # of overtime hours he worked so they could afford it. Then he worked full time and was unable to afford insurance. So his solution is to do what he's doing now. If they really wanted to be covered, they would have made the choices necessary to be so. They chose instead that having a (growing) family with one breadwinner (apparently) was what they wanted to do. Understandably, they want to fix the system so health care is more affordable.
Of course, you want to insult me by saying I don't understand that working for yourself means you don't have health care provided by an employer. Pal, if you knew how to conduct your life like I do, you could be retired like I am. And I wouldn't have had to go there if you'd just held him to his choices while concurrently agreeing that we need health care change badly, like I do and said in my previous post.”
