Thankful, Well Not So Very Much

“Yet there are things that can be done within days of taking office and many of those things he talked about during the campaign. So was he lying as a typical politician does? The jury is still out----only because he's so likable and smart, but why the delays?”

“I said they won more than they lost. In fairness to FDR, he, unlike today, had no economic theories to guide him. He simply believed in a balanced budget. And what Republican congress are you referring to. The Dems had the majorities.

As for LBJ, I am talking domestically....obviously.
LBJ gave us Medicare.....no small accomplishment to prevent much worry in old age.
Not perfect, but necessary for a civil society.”

“Realism didn't inhibit FDR or LBJ. Instead, they made their case with a firm hand, winning more than they lost. Obama doesn't even make the case.”

biznesschic replied on Nov 27, 2009 at 23:25:14

“I voted for Nader and I'm glad I did. War escalation and no effort to mention "single payer" health reform confirms my vote.

It's a matter of temperament, not intellect. As bright as Obama is, he wants to be reelected and that means rocking no boats. It's like the failure of Gore and Kerry to talk about a higher living wage during their campaigns. The common man remains forgotten, as if his vote can't be won and counted.”

“If true, he deserves this and more for giving us Sarah and allowing her to smear Obama by the "palling around with terrorist" nonsense lines during the campaign. He should be ashamed of this behavior and he never apologized for it.

All the Republicans who 1980 have courted the most extreme elements of the wingnuts deserve this too.”

Palin Usurped "Concession" Speech

Commented Nov 08, 2009 at 06:06:58 in Politics

“FDR didn't.”

Freesia2 replied on Nov 08, 2009 at 12:00:54

“False. He had about a dozen speechwriters. Archibald Macleish and Robert Sherwood worked with him frequently.

The only thing he did - which is very much like Obama - is to know what he wanted to say, have them work it up using his words and thoughts, and then he tweaked it and rewrote passages if he felt like it. Obama did much the same with his Philly race speech. He talked to his speechwriter at length, wrote up notes, set him to work. And then he spent a day and night taking the speechwriters good speech (based on Obama's own words) and crafted it further.

Any historians in the house? FDR had speechwriters.”

There's No Such Thing As A Republican Filibuster: It's Time to Deliver

Commented Oct 27, 2009 at 05:01:17 in Politics

“Watching the Democrats display their timidity is agonizing. You are right. Why vote for them if they refuse to do anything? The alternative is even worse: give power back to the Republicans who have systematically looted the government since 1980.

It may be time for viable third parties across the country. They would serve as a check and a balance against the abuses of the two established parties. Without this pressure, the country will go directly to the dogs.”

gabberwok replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 15:45:27

“What would be ideal would be a parliamentary system where you have fractured parties that form temporary coalitions. Lacking that, wishing a third party for the left is a bad idea unless you're a conservative. All it will do is fracture our vote and give them more elections.

Game theory's a bastard.”

Politicians and a Dark Horse

For a country that loves and demands choice in the market place, that loves to pick among 50 models of ,say, toasters, we sure suffer from a lack of political imagination and ideas.

Why are we so afraid?”

“Not sure what your point is. A foreign war is a trap, almost impossible to "win" while it drains the energy and money from needed domestic concerns.

This is not about impatience with Obama; it's about the next road taken for the future of the country.

Why are we obsessing about Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan as Americans die in battle? Wht are we acting as if our future is based on these countries?”

“Expecting a politician to show courage may be expecting too much.

It would be a great thing to do. something that might shake Obama up. One thing is sure. The issue may overtake any domestic progressive initiative, which would play right into the right wing's hands for the coming elections.

We are still in deep trouble, despite Obama's intentions. A nation that looks , for example, to a phony moderate senator from Maine for wisdom, is looking in the wrong places.”

Manchesterian replied on Oct 15, 2009 at 08:11:43

“The VPOTUS showed courage in dispatch of his duties. And every time a politician gets up and goes to work in today's America he/she is showing great courage.

The V.P. advised the POTUS based on his knowledge and experience.

The POTUS is not obligated to follow every piece of advise he receives from his VPOTUS or any of his advisers, just like Arianna is not obligated to accept every piece of advise she gets from her staff.

To quote an infamous PPOTUS: Obama “is the decider", he really does have the last word, unless he concedes it.

Really folks, in a few weeks it will be a year since he became president - get used to it!

Of course he could do what his predecessor did and just have him and the V.P. run the country eliminating everyone else - but nah as a J.D. with a specialization in Constitutional Law, he is following the rules including the one where the president gets the last word.

How novel!”

“Either way Obama loses. He stays and the right wing will always say he doesn't do enough. If he leaves, then he'll be called a failure.

The larger danger is that the issue will drown out any progressive domestic agenda, which is why Obama was elected in the first place. It's the same thing that happened to Johnson and Vietnam. It overshadowed his formidable domestic achievements, and then we got the Nixon nightmare.”

I have watched Mr. Scarborough all through the primaries, the election and through these 9 months of the Obama presidency -- and while he may disagree w/the president's economic policies, he has praised Obama's foreign policy. He praised many of Obama's speeches, supported the message to school children, etc. I believe that Mr. Scarborough will be one of the first to admit he is wrong when our economy turns around, health care is a done-deal and we start lowering the deficit.”
