“Let me get this straight.

You ask an esoteric question. You get an answer. Then you say the answer "means nothing" because it's too esoteric.

You truly are a Mac user, congrats.”

“That would've been great if it weren't for the guy in the bodysuit.

Though it reads better as a spoof making fun of elitist Mac users than it does as a promotion for them, which I think might be what they intended. Though they'd have to be pretty lacking in irony for that...”

Strengthening the Estate Tax to Strengthen the Country

Commented Dec 20, 2009 at 06:30:16 in Politics

“Let me see if I understand you correctly.

You're saying that giving such a colossal amount of their money DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE is secretly just a tax dodge, to keep it out of "gubermint" hands...?

Ummmm, well... If that was actually the case, then I'd commend them as patriotic for doing that, as well. They're using their money for the betterment of those around them either way.”

TucsonDean replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 15:08:26

“No, you don't understand me, or them. Your post claimed that the government should tax the rich for the benefit of America. The reality is that the wealthy themselves know how to spend their money better than the government, and they choose to spend it all over the world, a very, very small portion of those funds even stays in America. They are feedng the starving around the world, curing global disease, and so on - all with NO participation from the US government. None of the Gates Foundation's billions will be used to relieve anyone's tax burden.

The rich earned what they have, and they should decide who gets it. What makes you think that congress is more qualfied to decide what to do with their money than they are?

And it turns out that the cost of trying to force the rich to pay estate taxes is about equal to what the government collects from them, it's a huge shell game:

Commented Dec 20, 2009 at 02:14:57 in Politics

“Posts like this by Gates Sr are what ACTUAL patriotism is all about. Putting your money where your mouth is. Not just flag waving.

I really don't see how Congressional Reps could vote AGAINST something that lessens the burden on 99% of America while affecting less than 1%. "Pay your fair share for the opportunities America's given you!" would be an easy sell, one would hope. Who's going to come out against it at protests? Billionaires for Bush?”

TucsonDean replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 03:42:21

“Except for one thing: Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, the two wealthiest people in the world, didn't put their money where their mouth is, at least not in any patriotic sense. They donated all their money to untaxed private foundations. Bill Gates has said he will leave ten million dollars to each of his three children, and will pay under ten million dollars in estate tax, less than 2/100 of one percent of his wealth. Their intention was to provide for the benefit of humanity at large, but they clearly didn't feel that the US government was the best steward of their wealth.”

“Neither did I, oh holy one, but PEOPLE ARE DYING.

We need SOMEthing now, and can get MORE later.

People who think that America should only pass a health care bill that has everything that we progressives want in it not only don't have any idea how POLITICS works, but also have no grasp of American History either.

Like A.W. said, Social Security was incredibly broken when it first passed, and only covered WIDOWS AND ORPHANS. Do you know a single person in America today who would give it up, or a politician who can successfully stand against it?

No...?”

“Because the right wing is monolithic. Even when it disagrees with itself, it hangs together for the group benefit. They think and move with one mind. That's why that silly little race in upstate-NY was such a big story, because it was the exception which proves the rule.

The left wing however, is made up of a hundred different splinter groups and special interests whose only common definition -- rather than some kind of moral or religious doctrine -- is usually opposition to the right. Therefore, we see the repeated formation of The Progressives' Circular Firing Squad. We can't even agree not to attack each other for being insufficiently-radical, and don't muster up enough progressive unity to even move a single issue, much less field a liberal candidate.

The left needs to grow up and get organized. Learn to swallow our pride for the greater good of all progressives on an issue-by-issue basis. Support those who stand against the right, even if their issue is not yours. Get off our lazy asses and actually make an effort if we want to make a difference. The last time I saw people even coming close to that was the protests in the runup to the Iraq war, and even those were a little limp. If we got the 60% - 80% of Americans who believe in a public option to march on Washington DC and SAY SO -- instead of just grumbling about it -- we could get anything done we wanted.”

nice2blucky replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 06:17:16

If we can get between 108 million and 144 million people to march on Washington, we can get things done.”

“exactly.

I love how the self-righteous extremists among us progressives apparently have the luxury of not needing the health care bill passed unless it's perfect. That must be nice. Perhaps in their spare time they will attend the funerals of those who don't?”

RepugsOut08 replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 18:03:53

“Who' asking for a perfect bill? We want one that can be built upon and that will protect consumers from mandated expensive premiums. No PO and no Medicare option simply castrates this bill for the consumer.
I didn't vote for Obama in order to make the insurance companies even more wealthy than they currently are.”

Pretending that EVERYthing is racist completely dilutes and destroys the occasions when ACTUAL racism occurs. Folks should stand up for them and say just that.”

What Chris Brown did was horrible and should've put him out of business as a celeb forever, but sadly it's given her a platform she hasn't earned in her career. And what's she used it for?
