“That doesn't make sense to me either. Especially when in the bible Paul writes " For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. " when he was in prison. In other words he felt as if he would be better off dead than in prison, but he understood since he was still alive it must mean he had a purpose to fulfill for Christ. So, dying is not a bad thing for Christians (according to Paul) But many modern christians have a belief that life itself is sacred and should be preserved no matter what. “I think it was only a recent thing. I was raised Catholic and when I was growing up people were very welcoming of death. If somebody was on life support, the doctors (very strict Catholics most of them) would tell the family that there is no more we can do, time to turn it off and let her/him "go to God". The idea was always to allow nature take it's course.
At school we were taught life was to be respected until 'natural death'. One of the worst things in Catholicism was limbo, limbo is when you are dead the soul is trapped and can't get to the next life. Artificial life could be preventing the soul from moving on, from a religious perspective that is a horrifying prospect.
I think that the religious change started with the American evangelicals and the last Popes support for their position in the Terri Shiavo case.
I can't understand it because being indoctrinated in Catholicism from a very young age in a very religious country, I was always led to believe that it was evil to artificially prolong death and that people in such cases were trapped in limbo. Separation from God is the definition of hell in Catholicism. How any Catholic could inflict that on somebody is beyond me.”
