How General McChrystal May Have Hurt Himself
Commented Oct 09, 2009 at 23:13:14 in Politics
“His report was conveniently "leaked" (another topic for discussion), and the President had not even read the report when McChrystal went public. McChrystal is NOT an elected official, he is in the military and answerable to the Commander in Chief - Generals serve at the pleasure of the President, period - are you kidding? "The tail does not wag the dog." (President Obama being the Alpha Dog, McChrystal being the tail, duh).”
PitBull6 replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 01:10:36
“Regardless, it was leaked and public knowledge by the time he made his speech (which was probably cleared ahead of time).
Pointing out the obvious --that McChrystal is a military man and subordinate to Obama--does not move the discussion forward. I am very familiar with how the chain of command works.
As I am clearly NOT kidding. He did not denigrate his boss nor criticize his position. In fact he only furthered his (the President's) current strategy and reinforced it. That forum was planned weeks before and general officers are permitted to do interviews and professional forums as part of their job. They are not automatons prohibited from expressing opinions or expounding on their strategies.
So I ask you *again*, from which protocol did he depart? Can you site anything from the UCMJ or is your opinion only based on the fact that he is asking for more troops and not less? (Incidentally, I am curious... what was your response about Bush firing all of those US attorneys who served at his pleasure?)”

Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 19:28:15 in Politics
“McChrystal broke military protocol, period. The POTUS is the Commander in Chief and any recommendations should go to ONLY the President FIRST. That McChrystal was out there telling the general public BEFORE the President had even read it is an outrage - no excuse - rule of military law has been broken. Even Powell, who got jerked around big time by Bush and friends, never went out and made a public plea. This is an undisciplined General - unacceptable and dangerous. Also, they need to find the leak and FIRE that person (probably an embedded Bush repug).”

redhead61 replied on Oct 08, 2009 at 23:08:28
“I agree. He broke chain of command in a very public way. He needs relieved of his duties period and demoted. To me, McChrystal is a rogue element in the military that cannot be tolerated. He answers to the President as Commander in Chief, and well knows the military protocol.. .and the consequences for not following it go up as high as his rank. Does he not realize he is to set a premium example of military protocol so that those who serve under him as well follow the chain of command?!
Advice is what he is set to give..but it is NOT to the public...t o try to pressure the President into his way of thinking.. it is for him to report to the President, and let him make that decision with his advisers help..He is under no obligation to follow what McChrystal offers.”

“Obama is "trying" to do everything he ran on - "Rome wasn't built in a day" folks. Healthcare is the oldest, hardest to get done, so he's putting other domestic things on hold to try and get this done. You people all tolerated the Bush Dynasty for 8 years, but your angry that he can't now turn all the damage around in 8 months?
As for the financial problems, we just stopped the bleeding, turning it around will take time and I have full confidence that rules will be put in place to prevent this from happening again - "patience is a virtue".”

“Yeah, but the problem is that he is trying too hard to please a group of people who will never be pleased, and in the process, is killing all the momentum and enthusiasm the American people gained when electing him. True, things can't happen in a vacuum, but they can certianly happen way faster than how they are proposed! We have the technology, the know how, the intelectual capacity and even the infrastructure to be able to enact these reforms way quicker, but what is holing everything is him trying to make nice with people who don't want to and will never make nice back. The result is that this slow movement just gives corporations more power and Americans less power--as it has been in this country for over 40 years.
Taking off a bandaid slowly hurts way more than pullng it off quickly. These slow timelines for critical reforms will only make the end result less effective and outdated.”

On civil liberties, he's every bit as bad as Bush was. What's worse, the continuation of Bush's disastrous policies by a "radical socialist" like Obama legitimizes them as bipartisan.
He's done as much to redistribute wealth upward as any Republican. Trillions, on and off the books, to the richest of the rich in bailout money. For the rest of us, a $25 cut in payroll taxes. Secret deals with the pharmaceutical and insurance industries that allowed their lobbyists to write the awful bill Baucus signed his name to.
They're going to escalate in Afghanistan and at the same time they're rattling the saber at Iran. ...
