Full Body Scanners: At What Cost To Privacy?

Commented Dec 31, 2009 at 22:07:07 in Technology

“That's true. Magnetic radiation is non-ionizing. As far as a strong enough magnet causing you to levitate, I have been in some pretty powerful MRI machines and never left the table.

With regard to these newer scanners, I can't find any information about the millimeter wave machines producing any dangerous radiation, only that they use radio waves--so, non-ionizing. The backscatter x-ray does release expose you to a very small amount of ionizing radiation; however, all the information shows that it's a safe amount of radiation. Do you have any evidence showing that it is an unsafe amount? Just to say that too much radiation is bad means some radiation is bad would be like saying drinking too much water is bad means you should never drink water. We are constantly being exposed to radiation (without it our bodies couldn't synthesize vitamin D), and from everything I've read, the amount in these backscatter machines is not harmful.”

LeftRight replied on Dec 31, 2009 at 22:19:14

“I haven't really read anything about them other than the news stories (which don't go into any sort of technical details) so I don't know if they're a lot or not.... I'm just concerned about it in case it IS a lot. Additionally, ionizing radiation tends to be cumulative, so we've got to be concerned about those who travel a lot and those who work with the machines....

As for levitation with magnetism, they did that with a frog about a decade ago, but I haven't seen anything else about it.... It'd take a lot for a human though...”

“It's very little radiation. You already are exposed to radiation when you go through a conventional metal detector at airports and also just by flying you are exposed to more radiation than you are at ground level because of your closer proximity to the sun. In fact, I would presume the greater exposure to radiation comes from flying itself because of the longer duration of exposure. Just relax.”

LeftRight replied on Dec 31, 2009 at 08:47:07

“A metal detector exposes you to a small amount of MAGNETIC radiation. This machine will expose to you a small amount of X-RAY radiation. Of the two, one can kill, and the other can do nothing until it's at a level high enough to levitate you.”

“That same web-site advertises a "fourth meal" tacobell.com/fourthmeall), and the volcano selection which seems to be the opposite of fresco. I looked at their ingredient statements for fun. They even ruin the health benefits of beans. The second ingredient in the beans is partially hydrogenated oil. Why? The beans don't need to be stiff, why not just plain oil? And look at this ingredient list for an empanada:

Enriched Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Apples (Apples, Salt, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid), Vegetable Shortening (Partially Hydrogenated Soybean And Cottonseed Oil), Brown Sugar, High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Modified Food Starch, Nonfat Dry Milk, Contains 2% Or Less Of The Following: Margarine (Soybean Oil, Water, Mono- And Diglycerides, Salt, Whey, Soy Lecithin, Sodium Benzoate, Artificial And Natural Flavor, Vitamin A Palmitate, Beta-Carotene Color), Tapioca Dextrin, Dextrose, Sugar, Maltodextrin, Salt, Rice Flour, Dicalcium Phosphate, Sodium Alginate, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Locust Bean Gum, Xanthan Gum, Soy Lecithin, Agar, Carboxymethylcellulose, Carrageenan, Caramel Color, Natural And Artificial Flavor.

“Maybe his shocking statement will help social services to get into action and provide for the needy. Sometimes it takes someone pointing out what the alternative is to move people.

As a side note, I have always wanted to steal something. I would want to set it up ahead of time in some fantasy world where the police and shopkeeper knew someone was going to steal something at some point but that he did not mean to commit a crime and would later pay for the object. Because, it's not that I want to get something for free. It's not that I want something for nothing. I just would love that feeling, that high.”

“I have to say the video gave me a creepy vibe.......didn't feel right

At the least the girl has some boundary issues, I'm not suggesting what caused them, but I can't imagine most parents letting their children at that age "climb" on an adult”

Brandon Crisler replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 07:07:00

“Gimme a break. Y'know, not everyone is a sex offender. I let my 11 year old cousin climb all over me without a second thought. There is nothing untoward about a child showing affection to an adult in the appropriate venue, and given the perceived "miraculous" nature of the event, I imagine Ashlyn is quite drawn to the fellow who apparently saved her life.
Miracles notwithstanding, I believe we've reached a point culturally where we're afraid to embrace (literally and figuratively) the tendency for children to seek physical approval/tenderness. Apart from the .001% of the population who might view a preteen behaving in such a way as somehow sexual in nature, in my opinion there is nothing wrong with that manner of physical contact, especially given the context of the situation. This man has acted in a archetypal masculine manner to save the life of an innocent child, and Ashlyn's physicality should be viewed in the same innocent, archetypal way. I see no sense in which it would be off color if the gender of either the "car lifter" or the child were switched.
Turn the fear-mindedness off for a second and recognize the bond between one who may well have died and the one who stepped in to rescue her. Consider the intense emotional experience it must have been to the child and, having no station in life, physical affection is her one method of repayment for the service he performed.”

JohnSawyer replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 06:34:45

“It's just "grateful exuberance" because he freed her from under a car--nothing to worry about. My two goofy nieces, when they were about this girl's age and I was in my early 30s, sometimes used to climb on me, though in their case it was more of a coordinated attack, and there was no funny business going on.”

He was already back in UK with his family. It doesn't sound like the baby is part of his life. Now if his older three with whom he was (more likely) by Sadie's side during the pregnancy (first two only I think), attended ob visits, ultra sound, birth, changed diapers, gave bottle, shagged their babysiter, etc. if he forgot one of those kids, that would be a bigger deal.”

BTW, I believe everyone of courses is owed equal rights regardless of what informs their sexual orientation. I hope that flame-proofs me. I am queer myself but my sexuality is very complex, and I would not be intellectually honest to use an aphorism like "I was born that way."
