“If they had found oil, we'd be well on the way to having the moon colonized by now with corporate dollars. Of course, that would suck when the corporations began claiming that they and they alone own the moon by virtue of their investment in development. Leading to the first interplanetary war in human history, with the corporations hiring mercenary armies from Halliburton/KBR...thus enriching Dick Cheney even more...

“a novel for you all: The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, by R.a. Heinlein.

In his vision mineral resources are found and sent cheaply back to earth. The miners were Botany Bay types, not just the U.S. but the Chinese too, felons, debtors, political dissidents; survival of the fittest.
We build not on the surface, but dig underground, an added layer of shielding from the Sun.

My sister (a Republican) and I (a Democrat) agree on one thing over the many years; Where's my moon colony?

Finding H2O (not just for hydration and air, but propulsion as well) is a very important step towards achieving Heinlein's vision. What is there that can be exploited for profit (thereby getting away from NASA having to foot the bill)?

It was R.a.'s attitude from the 50's on.”

“Sorry...trees absorb carbon dioxide. They release oxygen into the atmosphere. That's basic 6th grade science. Obviously, you have not quite mastered the Google yet. Let me help you.

http://www.coloradotrees.org/benefits.htm#carbon

"Heat from Earth is trapped in the atmosphere due to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other heat-trapping gases that prohibit it from releasing heat into space -- creating a phenomenon known as the "greenhouse effect." Trees remove (sequester) CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis to form carbohydrates that are used in plant structure/function and return oxygen back to the atmosphere as a byproduct. About half of the greenhouse effect is caused by CO2. Trees therefore act as a carbon sink by removing the carbon and storing it as cellulose in their trunk, branches, leaves and roots while releasing oxygen back into the air."”

2warvet replied on Oct 12, 2009 at 22:04:28

“And what is the biggest, and as of yet least understood, green house gas out there? I will give you a hint the climate model cannot factor it..........

Water vapor. It has a larger impact on the heating and cooling of the earth than CO2.”

“And I reject a party that calls people "terrorists" for speaking out their objections to a war on a country which did not attack us on 9/11...

I reject a party which openly questions the citizenship of the duly elected President even after he has graciously provided a copy of the certificate of live birth from the state of Hawaii where he was born...

I reject a party full of people who would rather sit around on their hands doing nothing but allowing insurance company executives to grow even fatter and richer on the exorbitant premiums they charge for minimal coverage, while their fellow citizens are dying for lack of health insurance or going bankrupt to pay for life-saving medicines and procedures...

So you can keep your empty-headed, Barbie-doll, beauty-queen, also-ran, pistol-packin' mama candidate girl... (although I do apologize to Barbie, comparing her to Palin is a truly unfair insult to Barbie dolls everywhere...)

I'll stick with a President that can construct a proper sentence in English...without winking gratuitously even one time during the utterance of said sentence. Or needing a ghost writer to help with sentence structure and grammar in his published works.”

“Actually dark is what Lewis Carroll intended. "Alice in Wonderland" is supposed to be like a descent into madness, and the journey back to a normal life. I think Burton is on to something here, the darkness of the original book (if you have never read it ...do) is something he, as a film maker, is well-equipped to capture.

I am quite looking forward to being able to see this when it is released.”

“I was born and raised in Tennessee, I deplore the behavior of people like Ms. Goforth. I am not a transplant from up North. Comments like your smug, snide regionalism prejudice tend to make us born Southerners really resentful of people who do move here from the North. I was raised by my mother (who is also born and raised in Tennessee, in fact...our family has been here in the South since before the Revolutionary War) to judge people by their character and deeds, not their skin color or race. To lump all us Southerners in with the ugliest elements that attract such disproportional attention is just as prejudiced and unfair as the racism of which you accuse us. And just for the record, one of the worst racists I ever met was a guy from New York City that moved down here...so I guess rampant racism is NOT just a Southern problem after all. Clean up your own filthy houses before you start pointing out the flecks of dust on our furniture.”

petalpusher replied on Jun 16, 2009 at 15:03:47

“I find all racists repugnant and vile and I don't care where they're from. We do get people like this up north too. People like this give everyone a bad name.”

dirtfreak replied on Jun 16, 2009 at 13:34:18

“I apologize for the extreme generalizations and really do agree with your comment 100%. But I moved down to NC 11 years ago without any thoughts of lumping in Southerners with any particular 'group', and made sure to drive that into my children. But it seemed like the Presidential election brought out the worst in people who on the surface were nice as pie, but down deep were still fighting the Civil War. Political differences are fine, but people who I know are very intelligent and logically knew what was better for the country just couldn't bring themselves to even consider voting for a black man. People who go to church every Sunday and quote the Bible constantly would insist that Obama was a Muslim radical, and that Sarah Palin was the answer to our prayers. And I know that there are plenty of Northerners who feel the same way. I admire people like you, talidapali, and your family who can look at things intelligently and make their decisions appropriately. I've just become acquainted with too many people who can't.”

“Speaking as a Tennessean, Ms. Goforth does not speak for me or anyone I know. She is unfit to be a representative of our state, working as she does in state government. Her supervisor, State Rep. Diane Black (R-Gallatin), should immediately fire her. I have written to Rep. Black and stated my position on this issue. We will see whether Rep. Black stands for or against this type of blatant racism. As for the "right" list and the "wrong" list...there is no right list...or there shouldn't be.

Hopefully, someday, these backwards-thinking, unrepentant racists will no longer plague our beautiful state. And our state is beautiful, it's just some of our people that are ugly, in mind and deed.”

“Living near the coal ash spill here in Tennessee, I can tell you the health concerns are HUGE with this issue. We have had heavy rains recently which has washed the toxic sludge downstream a lot farther than anyone anticipated, whole new areas are now being contaminated months after the initial spill. Our tourism industry will suffer for years as the fish and lakes become dangerous for humans to handle or play in. Home owners are seeing their property values fall drastically due to the real and perceived threat of toxins in the water and land. And the TVA is not addressing the public's interests or concerns in any meaningful way, other than to arrest volunteers who are trying to document the devastation and help residents with limited resources deal with the aftermath of the disaster.”

“Well, as a vegetarian, I don't just eat asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, and spinach. Like meat-eaters, I ,too, like variety in my diet. I get proteins from soy products like tofu, tempeh and meat substitutes from companies like Turtle Island Foods (Tofurky), Yves (veggie pepperoni and deli meats"), Morning Star Farms (Chik patties and nuggets, Grillers hamburger patties, Grillers burger crumbles, veggie Breakfast Sausage patties and links) and mycoproteins from companies like Quorn (Chicken substitutes like nuggets, breaded patties and unbreaded cutlets). I also eat grains and starches in breads and cakes and things like potatoes and corn on the cob. VAriety is the spice of life, whether you eat meat or are totally vegan.

Gout and other disorders like it are caused not just by the kinds of things you eat, but by the quantities.

In all things...moderation.”

“ddanimal is right that you should stay away from all those processed foods. Gettng enough protein is not something you need to worry about. It's almost impossible to not get enough, even as a vegan or raw vegan. It's more important to stay away from all the processed crap. It just takes away from all the healthy and delicious you could be eating instead.

And veganism is fscking awesome. You should try it for 30 days and see how you like it. It's the only way to give it a fair shot. Judge it afterwards.”
