“Actually dark is what Lewis Carroll intended. "Alice in Wonderland" is supposed to be like a descent into madness, and the journey back to a normal life. I think Burton is on to something here, the darkness of the original book (if you have never read it ...do) is something he, as a film maker, is well-equipped to capture.

“Living near the coal ash spill here in Tennessee, I can tell you the health concerns are HUGE with this issue. We have had heavy rains recently which has washed the toxic sludge downstream a lot farther than anyone anticipated, whole new areas are now being contaminated months after the initial spill. Our tourism industry will suffer for years as the fish and lakes become dangerous for humans to handle or play in. Home owners are seeing their property values fall drastically due to the real and perceived threat of toxins in the water and land. And the TVA is not addressing the public's interests or concerns in any meaningful way, other than to arrest volunteers who are trying to document the devastation and help residents with limited resources deal with the aftermath of the disaster.”
