What the Media and Obama Never Understood About the Public Option
Commented Dec 22, 2009 at 20:51:40 in Politics
“Then those that don't want to have to pay for health insurance can opt out of being sick or needing to visit the emergency room. People who chose not to own health insurance should have to pay before service is rendered. Increased mortality will be the result but the problem is solved.”

“So can everyone opt out of being sick? Opt out of visiting an emergency room in the even of an accident?”

“Insurance companies don't manufacture goods so this is an awful analogy. I hope it didn't you long to come up with it. Insurance companies don't do anything nor do they make anything. They are purely for administrative purposes. Their primary goal is to increase their shareholders wealth. They do that by denying coverage to those that will cost them money to cover. In their perfect world, they would only cover the healthy and the young. Why shouldn't everyone be offered another option? If private insurance is the superior option, then they should have had no problem maintaining their customer base.”

“Of course insurance companies aren't manufacturers. The whole point of my comment is that what the article at the top of the page singles out as the big-deal "cancer" is actually a feature even of companies that are very different from insurers.
Insurance companies do provide a valuable service. They should be able to cover their costs in so doing, including a normal return to shareholders. But they should make so-called "zero economic profit", which is economist jargon for not being able to make obscene profits by scre.wing the public.”

“You're aware that car insurance is a mandate as well, right? Were there any lawsuits that claimed that was unconstitutional?”
shryock replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 10:19:35
“actually, if i do not want to purchase car insurance i do not have to.
all i have to do is not own a car. totally different situation.
if the federal government mandated that i MUST purchase a car, that would be unconstitutional, in my opinion, and i would join a class action suit against it.
if i CHOOSE to own a car, the government (of the states currently) can mandate that I insure it.”

“Difference, you can opt out by not driving!”
Luna C666 replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 08:47:15
“The difference is that driving a car is a privilege not a right, and constitutional privileges are not protected the way rights are (14th Amendment I believe) that is why they can tax so many things related to cars like gasoline, roadways and Driver's Licenses, Tag and registration taxes etc.., life however (welfare) IS a constitutional right, and this almost amounts to 'pay to live'. It also possibly falls under the apportionment clause whereas this would be considered a direct tax and not an excise (indirect) tax like the taxes surrounding the privilege of driving an automobile. Taxes to stay alive, I dunno- I think there may be something to be said of this..”

“I disagree with your comment in regards to President Obama. The President doesn't "steer clear of declaring himself or openly associating himself with black America." How would one do this anyway? I think this is impossible but if there is a process or software application available, please share since it's seems fascinating. President Obama has to stay above this. He's the President of this entire nation, not just black America. That doesn't mean he's turned in his African American membership card. Race shouldn't define us, being HUMAN should. Everyone knows what time it is and this is a benefit to the country that race is a part of the conversation. People know what they are when they look in the mirror and now they know how everyone sees them.”

“Are you black? I am.
How would an African American man serving as President of the United States openly associate himself with black America? By not using the NAACP 100th anniversary to disparage an entire race. By not finding ways to skip out on major events in black America while finding time to make appearances on Conan O'Brien or Jay Leno.
By taking trips to major urban areas of this country and walking the streets to shake hands with and hear from ordinary African Americans as opposed to cherry picking places like Elkhart IN or MN to make staged, scripted political pep rally appearances before predominately white audiences.
As African Americans we know when we're being had and when someone is a sell out. President Barack Obama never had an African American membership card. He burned it to a crisp in favor of personal political ambition. And a lot of ordinary African Americans like me who voted for Hillary knew this from the start.”
