How Adam Lambert Is Hurting Gay Marriage
Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 22:10:11 in Entertainment
“I've been saying for years that gays need a MLK figure. They need to be out marching. They need to start letting politicians know that being anti-gay marriage is a political liability. They need to be making themselves squeaky wheels. I used to think I would never see a black president in my lifetime, I was wrong. I hope I see gay equality in my lifetime.
The Adam Lambert performance wasn't putting your best foot forward. You need to convince soccer moms that you want to raise families just like straight couples. Perception is king, and Adam isn't helping.”

“Luckily, medicine has improved over the last 23 years. I'm sure this is the exception rather than the rule. My heart goes out to this man and his family. I notice that a lot of people seem to be sure that this man wants to die. I think in his position, I would appreciate the opportunity to finally communicate with my family. At least he has a family that cares about him. Imagine if he didn't have anyone advocating for him, like so many people in the healthcare system today.”

“Beck has officially passed "annoying" into just plain scary. He relentlessly badgered an admin employee who mentioned Mao in one of her speeches. But, he then turns around and says we should start being more like the Chinese. Which part, the human rights abuses or the communism? Communism which he supposedly hates. He also wants to take us back to a time "our founding fathers" would approve of. Since most of our founding fathers owned slaves, I'm going to have to decline his kind offer. I find his timing on his speech especially offensive. If he is even thinking about comparing himself to Rev. Dr.MLK Jr., I don't think he's prepared for the sh@tstorm he's about to bring on himself. I can't think of anyone, white or black, who would let that comparison go without comment.”

But, I guess that's why we have political parties, to keep up discourse. Even though I do think it would be a better America if all the conservatives suddenly saw the "light". lol”

“It is their hospital, not EVERY catholic hospital runs the same way. My point was that it would have been nice to have a choice. I don't think that's a lot to ask for. That way they can keep to their religious beliefs, and I can keep to mine. And I'm not just thinking about myself. I'm also concerned for the other employees who are in similar situations.”

“Like I said, if it sucks no one will want it. The govt option is still going to have to provide services and programs that are marketable. Tax subsidy doesn't mean better, look at the USPS. I usually go to UPS. And I don't believe the govt is trying to "take over healthcare". They are trying to make it more affordable, so as many Americans as possible have access to it.”

“This was well over 5 years ago, and I don't know what portion my employer paid. I think it was 80-90%, which I hear is very good. I'm sorry to hear about your outrageous costs. I'm sure you can't wait for some options! I'm a single mother and $300 is a lot of money. I probably wouldn't have gotten it if it wasn't for my son. The only thing I mainly needed insurance for was denied to me anyway (birth control). I'm one of those people who doesn't go to the doctor unless I'm puking blood, which is typical of most nurses I know.”

“I agree. When people talk about how Obama isn't letting the "free market system work", it blows my mind! That's exactly what he's doing. If the public option plan sucks, then people won't buy it. These people who are against health care reform are the same ones who think school vouchers are the answer to everyone's problems. Competition between schools won't cause schools to close, but competition between insurance companies will cause private insurers to go out of business. How do they rationalize this thinking?”

“tantan75,
The trouble is, the "public option" being proposed here will not be an option for anyone who already has insurance! It will only be available to a small segment of Americans who have no insurance. Hardly an option or competition!
The other problem with your reasoning is that insurance isn't like other consumer products. When you buy it, you're buying a promise. When you really need delivery of the product, the coverage for a major loss, the insurer really has no incentive to do a good job. They're only too happy to encourage you to go away. If your insurer doesn't really honor their contracts, it's too late to switch. And the way insurance works, they can advertise their way out of all kinds of misbehavior, because the majority of policyholders aren't in your shoes. (People who are happiest with their insurance are mostly those who don't really need it.)
Many insurers (with auto as well as health) will pay small claims promptly and lavishly in order to keep people singing their praises and paying their premiums. But it's a different story if you have a really large loss.
Competition between insurance companies will only mean competition to sell you a promise -- and insurers already lie and obfuscate quite well, and will only do it better if they have to.”

“I think this amendment is excellent based on personal experience. I used to work for a Catholic hospital, and they wouldn't let our insurance carrier cover anything that went against their beliefs. For instance, no birth control, tubal ligation, vasectomies, or abortions. We tried everything. We filed a class action suit, but we were ruled against. The judge said the hospital had the right to block payment for anything they didn't approve of. Many of us tried getting our own coverage, but we were denied because our employer already offered affordable insurance. So, we were stuck with our crappy coverage. Not only that, it was far from "affordable" at least by my standards. My portion of the insurance was over $300/month for the family plan. I no longer work for that hospital, but thinking of the people who still work there; they would love to have a public option, or any option. I know I would've.”

“I'm sorry for your situation, but the question remains, why are you blaming a religous institution for following their beliefs? You knew these details when you started work there. Yet you took the job knowing the guidelines.
It's not the same thing as working for a company with no religous ties. That's where the real problems lie.”

“Like it or not it's their hospital and they have every right to specify what services they will or will not provide. By the way how much charity care did they provide, I'll bet you'll find it's an awful lot. With your Me, Me, Me attitude sounds like you made the right choice and went somewhere else. I''ve been in Catholic Hosptals over the years and found they provided excellent care. By the way $300 per month for insrance is cheap. Just wait till ObummerCare takes over and your rates skyrocket.”
