In the Spirit of the Season, Please Don't Be a Jerk at the Movies

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 17:03:17 in Entertainment

“I would place #5 at #1. There is NOTHING that can ruin a movie faster than people who don't turn off their gadgets. I remember every single one - the woman with the strobe-light bluetooth during Watchmen and another during The Princess and the Frog; the guy who started surfing on his iphone (also during Watchmen), the girl who completely ruined Up by texting mid-movie, the gaggle of teenagers REPEATEDLY texting their friends and probably each other during The Box (why are teenagers watching The Box, anyway?)

Even during Up in the Air, there was the woman whose phone was off, but every time she recieved a text, her *purse* would light up.

Giving/recieving texts during a film is the equivilent to turning on a FLASHLIGHT in a darkened room. It is about the rudest thing you can do, and as you can see, my memories of all the listed movies will forever be just a little bit ruined by these people.

Parents also need to teach this to their kids. Teenagers are the worst, since for many of them, this type of unacceptable behavior is completely normal. The girl during "Up" actually seemed surprised when I told her to turn her phone off.”

PunKinPai replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 20:37:16

“I agree about the texting. The jerky kid sitting next to me at an (expensive) Eddie Izzard performance had his stinkin' phone open during the entire performance. He was holding it down by his knees so he could annoy the maximum number of people.”

Huff Post Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Commented Jul 16, 2009 at 17:00:48 in Entertainment

“I went to bed annoyed last night having just come back from the show. The thing that irritated me the most was that, put simply, Yates told the wrong story. The plots of HBP are, in order of importance:

1) Meet Voldemort!
2) Intruduce the concept of the horcrux, start hunting
3) Hey, what's Draco doing? And why is Snape now teaching DADA?
4) kissy kissy smoochy love stuff, hormones, upcoming nuptuals, and quiddich

Now someone PLEASE tell my why Yates devoted so much freaking time to the love junk, and virtually ignored the actual *point* of the book, which is "Meet Voldemort". Instead of getting to know Tom, his creepy inbred family, his unfortunate witch mother (and more unfortunate father), the children in the seaside cave that he tortured, the old woman he seduced and murdered...we get Lavender, making faces, Lavender making hearts in the window, Lavender elbowing her way into scenes that don't even involve her...

Lavender Brown was an amusing subplot, not the CENTER OF THE STORY. Arrgh, it irks me thinking about it. Shame on Yates for not reeling that girl. She was cranked to 11; she should have been about a 6.

I blame Twilight.”

kansasmagic replied on Aug 03, 2009 at 02:15:29

“Spot-on comment about the "wrong story" - though I haven't seen this film yet, my chief complaint of the previous two movies is that they each told the "wrong story" in certain respects. I think the problem stems from trying to make each movie work on its own (which of course the casual moviegoer requires), instead of really treating them as successive chapters in an overarching story arc. So amusing subplots are elevated at the expense of character and plot development. It's unfortunate that we're not really getting Voldemort's backstory - but would the typical opening-weekend moviegoer understand a film called "Harry Potter" that turned out to be more about Voldemort and Snape?

Fact is, the movies are not made for fans of the books - they are made, like all Hollywood blockbuster style films, to reach as big an audience as possible, and that means mostly people who have only seen the films, or even only this film, rather than people who have read the books. The angst and humor of teenage romance is a bigger draw than Tom Riddle's family history, I'm afraid.”

Shut Up, Jen! Why Won't Aniston Stop Dissing Angelina and the Media?

Commented Dec 07, 2008 at 16:45:57 in Entertainment

“I feel like I am the only person on Earth who remembers this...While promoting "Troy", Brad and Jen were on a teevee show or a magazine interview (my memory is foggy; I think Oprah may have been involved) and when he and Jen were asked if they were going to be together forever, they both replied with a weird, lackluster "we'll be together until we fall out of love" response. To be fair, it was a pretty realistic answer, but it was also startling to hear a couple be so frank, acknowledging that "forever" wasn't a word in their vocabulary, and that they didn't seem to have a willingness to fight if the going got tough.

That was the moment that I knew they weren't going to last. If Jen wants to whine about it, whatever. It's been, like 3 years. She really needs to let it go.”

Funnelweb replied on Dec 08, 2008 at 23:36:53

“I too remember that. I remember Jen had also said, whilst still married that Brad (her HUSBAND) was *not* the love of her life. While, she and Brad were still 'happily' married. I remember thinking what a cold woman. Look, if you don't *know* that your husband, is the love of your life, then you really have issues and shouldn't have married him, unless you were 100% sure. All through her marriage to Brad, she came across as very cold, and I always believed she was married to him not for love but for something else... I honestly don't believe she ever loved him. I believe she hurt Brad.”

chicamorena replied on Dec 07, 2008 at 18:55:26

“I remember seeing that interview. It was positively weird. I've never seen a couple looking less connected to each other or less committed their marriage. It sounded as if they already knew the marriage was dead and they were just going through the motions.”

kas70 replied on Dec 07, 2008 at 17:00:08

“I don't understand why answering asked questions honestly about something that would scar ANYONE, is being equated with curling up in a ball obsessing about Brad. She has moved on, but the scars and apparently the questions remain - there is nothing wrong with acknowledging that.”

“Wow. MRb1000 has just discovered the vast gay agenda: to enter the military and specifally make MRb1000 uncomfortable.

Maybe if you took the time to know a gay person you might realize what a tool you sound like.

You talk about choosing your roomates. I didn't choose my college roommate. She was a full-blown praying, fasting, Koran-reading Muslim. Since it never occured to me to be afraid of her, I instead decided to befriend her. Funny how that works...getting to KNOW someone and realizing they're just like you.”

“Obama has clearly and repeatedly stated that he thinks it should be left up to the states and that it should not be a national issue. He has also clearly and repeatedly stated that Prop 8 was unfair and divisive. As a matter of fact, the Yes on 8 campaign took Obama's own words and twisted them in their commercials to make uninformed voters think that he supported Prop 8. He didn't.

If you know anything about his personality, it is pretty obvious that he couldn't care less about the issue.”

I didn't know about it, but my husband drove past them. He flipped them off.
