“Oddly enough, Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon did more for the country than any other Republican president since Lincoln. If Nixon was not such a paranoid person with such low self esteem, he might have made better political decisions. His policies were tough for the country but it was a tough economic time in the 70's.”

The Virtuous Man Named Jesus Christ

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 11:54:33 in Living

“We have no factual information on the man we call Jesus of Nazareth. What we have is more important, we have a way of life that can help us transcend ourselves and promote peace within and without. Let's drop the pageantry and honor the preacher by following His instructions.
We can live in a world of peace through Jesus Christ whether you are a Christian or not.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.”

“I'm sorry but the reason this Latin document was probably ignored is because it is a forgery. Most likely if this document were read by Caesar, the governor would have been hauled off and killed. There were quite a few healers and profits running around the middle east at the time. Occupied Palestine was not the place for a local to stand out as a leader of anything without getting hauled off by the authorities.

Unless the governor was singling a local rabbi out for questioning and incarceration, he would not bother to send a message to his boss about it. Even Pontius Pilot did not record the death.

As for the physical description, most people did not know what Jesus looked like because he preached in his own neck of the woods for most of his short career. We really have no actual record of his life from an archaeological perspective. That really doesn't matter if we understand the purpose of religion.

As a follower of Jesus, I focus on the message He left and not on the messenger or the drama surrounding his name.
Peace on Earth Good Will to Men.”

The Democrats' Authoritarian Health "Reform" Bill and the Ascendency of Corporatism in the Democratic Party

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 11:18:47 in Politics

“If you want a real solution then think about voting for as many liberal leaning local politicians regardless of party. Get them moving up the food chain with a Grover Norquist style mandate of public campaign financing reform.

Start and grow the term limits movement and the public option movement. We can effect change because there are more of us than there are of them. Once we get the teabaggers and the Trotsky-ites together, we can take the lead in real government reform.

The corporate sponsorship of the Tea party movement is still largely unknown to the teabaggers themselves. They need to understand that the real enemy is leading their movement. Infiltrate the movement and steer the populist rage in right direction. It's not about Washington, it never was; that's like saying we caught JFK's killer when Oswald was captured. Let's go after the real culprits.”

“Unfortunately, as long as the vast majority of the American people (including, based on the experience of at least the past half-dozen years, the vast majority of progressives) can so easily be led around by the leashes through their noses, there are far, far more of 'them' than there are of 'us' - making progress exceedingly slow.

And when a progressive politician gets to Washington, D.C., they're very likely to get rolled by the existing establishment there - as happened to one we elected in 2006 who ran on a decidedly progressive platform but kow-towed to the party leadership once elected, breaking several major progressive campaign pledges.

But if we're willing to take the 3 - 4 decades that it took the Neocons to assume control of their party, we've got a chance.”

Indon replied on Dec 24, 2009 at 11:48:41

“The problem with that is that such candidates will never get enough people aware of them without sufficiently great election campaign financing.

Financing which will always be drowned out by overwhelming amounts of corporate-provided money.

We need to get public campaign financing _before_ we can get better legislators, not the other way around.”

The Democrats' Authoritarian Health "Reform" Bill and the Ascendency of Corporatism in the Democratic Party

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 11:04:20 in Politics

“This is the result of corporate money buying politicians. We are just waking up to the real enemy. It's not a Left/Right thing it's an us verses the corporatists thing. It always has been.

The corporatists took over the progressive Republican party after Lincoln gave the railroad concessions away to the industrialists. They've figured out how to dominate the Democratic party when Bill Clinton used them to win his elections.

The best way to fight back is to expose and continue to reveal the big corporate influence on the Right and Left in this country. Shine a bright light on the vermin in order to get to the truth. They are powerful so be careful where you step. We have made a religion out of capitalism, just as we've turned it into a political system.”

Indon replied on Dec 24, 2009 at 20:17:07

“Identifying the problem's only the first step, though.

After the problem's commonly identifies (corporations), we find a solution.

I'd advocate publicly funded campaigns.

From there, we push the solution to those aware of the problem. So, uh, please look up publicly funded campaigns and how they stop corporate influence in our government?

From there, well, once there are enough people who agree on a solution, we take action.”

Gains and Losses

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 14:36:37 in Politics

“I agree with you in the majority of your analysis, however I don't think the problem is leadership. Because unlike LBJ who actually wielded political power in an era when corporations were paying a hell of a lot more than 35% in taxes, this president and Congress are faced with a series of corporate giants that are far more pernicious than anything we've seen in our history.

One major disaster of this administration price squarely placed on the shoulders of Mr. Obama would be the overwhelming presence of the Clinton era entourage. These corporate shills have deluded themselves into thinking that the marketplace has good intentions for the general public.

The simple fact is they don't even hide their claim of power. We saw during the primaries and the election of last year that the movement to ramp up campaign money from Wall Street toward the Democratic Party started back in 2007. When your friends and enemies are all bought and paid for, we have to all face the facts that we all owe our souls to the company store.”

LazarusTJFA replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 23:54:28

“Obama may be no better or no worse that we were destined for. However, he won by creating huge expectations of Hope & Change. He has seemingly abandoned those ideals & dashed the hoe he created. He probably would not have won if he had not created those expectations. However, his failure to even attempt to satisfy those needs will haunt his next three years before he loses the next election, either during the primaries or in the general election.

Many, including myself cannot vote for any Rethuglican. However, their loyal following will. Many, including myself will never vote for Obama again. I have rarely (since JFK) trusted a politician like I trusted Obama & the taste of betrayal is overwhelming & complete.”

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 14:16:46 in Business

“I'm very glad to see so many people waking up to the fact that most of our problems aren't left and right political issues but rather corporatist versus everyone else. This has been the constant struggle in our country since its formation. The very wealthy ran off to Canada and England rather than support independence for the United States. They even had the nerve to help fund the enemy during the war of 1812 and during the Civil War gave money to the South.

I'm not against all corporations, hell I own one. The problem is that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

“The real issue here is not the president but the money that controls Congress. How often do we have to hear the Blue dog dems are getting barrels full of cash to vote against the interests of their constituents. During LBJ's time, he could strong-arm a few key Dems to tow the line. Political power was still in the hands of politicians. Now, it's all about the corporate dollars.
Please place the blame squarely on the real enemies of freedom.”

Commented Dec 16, 2009 at 17:07:25 in Politics

“As a person who lived through the 60's and 70's, I'm laughing at all the wimps and whiners who are sitting around feeling hurt that the current president has not turned water into wine. Did you all really think that we would get power back from the corporate elite through elections?

If you really think that the Senate would bow down to the president in favor of the wishes of the majority, I have a bridge to sell you. Mr. Obama said over and over that this was going to be a tough fight. Mr. Bush had no problem getting what he wanted because he simply asked for what the ruling elite directed him to ask for. Why would anyone in the Senate fight for what is right against the wishes of the money changers who keep them in power?

Give me a good reason why any big corporation should give up their status and power in favor of the will of the American public? If you want to get things right and return to democratic representative rule, we will have to all join the Teabaggers and expose the real enemy of democracy - Capitalism.”

“I don't think it's a fear of death that leads to the many worlds theory. I think it's the observation that if energy is constant and unchanging, we are as the Buddhists say "one with everything."

People need to feel that their individuality is not threatened by elimination of the senses. We probably are not aware of our real place in the universe anyway.

We really don't use much perception when it comes to understanding what is really around us at this point in evolution.”

“Thank you for a great article and I think you have hit on a few crucial topics. Let's not forget that sex is not simply a passing interest for humans. It is an overriding imperative for many people. It is sublimated by most of us in order to be part of our social network.

For many of us, sex is charged with cultural limitations and hurdles while others equate it with the actions of a handshake (O.K., maybe a hug). It doesn't matter who is right or wrong, we should accept that it is complicated.”

I agree that navigating sensuality and sexulity can be complicated on it own, then add a vow of "forsaking all others" and extra marital sex it can become really complicated and downright messy. I wonder why someone takes that marriage vow and then doesn't keep it. All men have the choice to remain single, ala George Clooney, and not make any long-term fidelity promises to the women they are with. Why make the promise and vow and break it in the first place? Why not get divorced before breaking the vow?”

"I Will Wear You Out"

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 10:50:56 in Living

“The Tiger Woods dust up is not a story about marital infidelity alone, it's also about our all too human needs. It's about our ability to fulfill out sexually driven ego. What do people of high achievement want?

This is not about love. It never has been. It's about sex. It's about the overwhelming drive that some men and women have that quite often is sublimated in career and external achievement.

Tiger probably still loves his wife very much but it's not even about romance. It's a deeper need that unfortunately not even his wife can fulfill. The relationship changes as soon as marriage and children enter the picture.

Most married men simply rely on porn the way headache sufferers will take an aspirin. Wealthy men and women with this drive have the resources to take their pleasure to the next level. Most of us poor suckers read romance novels or live vicariously through our single friends.

I agree with the blogger - you are not allowed to inflict your whims and desires on your mate, simply because they signed the document of marriage unity. Can you imagine how disastrous a relationship would be if we went back to the days when women had to submit to their husband's every demands?

We are shocked that Afghan laws are being written allowing men to force themselves on wives if they refuse to have sex. No, unfortunately, it's not about love and romance, it's about sex and ego.”

condor101 replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 11:23:12

“And women should not hold a man hostage to a marriage by threatening to make him poor and destitute if he files for divorce.
Women use this tactic to keep men in their control. I know of a guy who was not allowed to see his male friends because his wife threatened to kick him out of the house, take full custody of his 3 children, and make him lose half of his wealth.
Without that marriage certificate, she would never had that power over him.

I know that when his children are over 18 years of age, he will divorce his monster wife.
Right now she has full control.”
