“Sorry, first day econ101 no good here. Ivory is not an acceptable material to use for ornaments. No ornaments made of ivory are acceptable. This message was spoken loudly today, and will affect demand while supply remains static, since this was not on the market anyway. Surplus. Price goes down. That's second day econ 101.”

libertarians seem to be the people that sit with rapt attention the first, and maybe even the second day, and then blow off the rest of the semester once it gets too mathy for em.”

“They give you the numbers of which prizes have been claimed for scratchers, v.s. how many of those prizes are available. If you calculate the number of tickets sold based on the stated odds, you can derive which games have better true odds for certain prizes. Technically, you should be able to find a game where the ratio of prize to cost exceeds the true odds of winning, assuming that there is one printing that runs until the game ends.”

Commented Nov 8, 2013 at 18:14:00 in Politics

“Not sure if you're really asking my opinion, but firstly, minimum wage is already $9 in Washington, so "double wage" is not exactly correct. I'm not a macroeconomist, so I honestly don't know what to expect from this, or any other large increase in minimum wage. I would think that the deli or the corner store that is barely getting by would be the most vulnerable, especially if they already have a high-priced, low quality product. A reasonable raise in price should be expected, since the cost is going up marginally. However, I would also think that additional funds in peoples' pockets would stimulate consumer spending, especially in the segment of the population that spends rather than saves, i.e. deli patrons. While the deli may have to take a hit for some time, if they can survive the initial shock, they would hopefully be doing more business and be able to work their better fed and happier employees a bit harder to achieve the same profit as before. I don't know that this will be the case, but I am a bit of an optimist when it comes to this stuff.”

“People are saying this will raise the cost of goods, and it might by a bit, but market principles still apply, right? No one will buy a $10 big mac (at least not anytime really soon) so the demand will continue to dictate the price of the burger. Why would that change? Would that potentially create a shift toward industries that already pay a living wage, and wouldn't change the price of their goods simply to protect profits?”

ImNotLateYoureEarly on Nov 8, 2013 at 17:43:03

“EXACTLY.”

chickenhawkwarrior on Nov 8, 2013 at 17:35:58

“So if the corner store or deli can't raise prices and can't afford to pay the double wages, what would happen then, you figure?”

upset99 on Nov 8, 2013 at 17:23:54

“It is more than that. This is inflationary in the town...to what extent? Not sure.

For example, the price of a Big Mac in Stockholm Sweden is much higher.
http://www.expatistan.com/price/big-mac/stockholm

To change this...will take time and yes, the owners and sr managment would have to earn less

Remember in 1970, the Wage of a CEO was about 30x more than average worker but now? 300X and there are less workers now! It has to do with the distribution of income. This is why we have seen costs stay stable for many things.”

“Dr. Alan Grant:
A mosquito, huh? OK, try to imagine yourself in the robot apocolypse. You get your first look at this "4 legged mosquito" as you enter a clearing. He moves like a bird, lightly, bobbing his head. And you keep still because you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement like T-Rex - he'll lose you if you don't move. But no, not Wildcat. You stare at him, and he just stares right back. And that's when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side,
[makes 'whoshing' sound]

from the other two wildcats you didn't even know were there. Because wildcat's a pack hunter, you see, he uses coordinated attack patterns and he is out in force today. And he slashes at you with this...

[he produces claw from his pocket]

A six-inch retractable claw, like a razor, on the the middle toe. He doesn't bother to bite your jugular like a lion, say... no no. He slashes at you here, or here...

[he lightly 'slashes' across the kid's body with the claw]

Or maybe across the belly, spilling your intestines. The point is, you are alive when they start to eat you. So you know, try to show a little respect.”

“Hemp has long been billed as an "alternative" clothing, material, etc. I always wondered why that would be so, when it is in many ways superior to the things that it can replace. It creates a strong fiber that makes sturdy pants, but can be refined to make a t-shirt as soft as cotton. It can make paper with a resource that grows to maturity in several months rather than trees that are habitat for animals, stop erosion, and have a multitude of air benefits. Its seeds are a nutritious food that makes a high quality oil or beverage. From the stalks, we can make cellulose as an easily harvested and biodegradable alternative to plastic. The return of hemp is not just for hippies. It just may be the key to reviving several American industries.”
