However, a regular taping once a week (as you pointed out yourself) is your definition of "extremely rare"? And it's possible that for some reason they couldn't schedule it while he was on that coast. How do you know what the schedule conflict might be? Other than knowing the show taping schedule for The View, what makes you an expert on it?”

I *am* saying that a reasonable amount when home feeling connected to GLBT issues as political issues, and, indeed, worked for the cause and donated money. I personally know many who did as a result of that march.

Using the 1994 elections as evidence that they didn't is specious logic. The 1994 elections were not a result of gay people and their allies not "taking the fight home". It was an election defined not by gay politics but by a whole host of issues. The religious right had been organizing since the eighties, and the conservative coalitions worked in tandem to make that happen.

And it's simply not true that things "didn't get done" after the previous marches. Quite a bit has been achieved since the mid-eighties. I simply disagree with you about how those things got done. Grassroots organizing is key, and it's my preferred method of activism, but it isn't the sole reason we've seen changes. Throughout the nineties, giving, volunteerism, and membership in national organizations went up. That's valuable and certainly had an effect on what kind of legislation could be proposed and the kinds of campaigns that could be mounted in order to support said legislation.

Local organizing and national marches have different goals. Goals that, one hopes, are complementary, not coterminous.”

“That's not really fair. The facts are that the past marches, certainly the ones int eh nineties, helped to consolidate and mobilize huge swathes of people. There's a reason why there has been an uptick in GLBT organization since then, and it isn't a result of Barney Frank and the few out elected officials.

Indeed, greater visibility and willingness to participate in the political process has helped to get officials elected and laws passed.

I have a lot of respect for Barney Frank, but he has always positioned himself as a counterpoint to many of the national GLBT rights organizations. He's a smart guy, but I'm not s sure he understands the the many elements necessary to engineer social change.

It's just not that simple, and Barney Frank is not the single bottleneck through which valuable efforts to support change pass.”
