Washington: Totally Disconnected From Main Street

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 09:11:51 in Business

“Indeed

mfg in general has been downplayed and demonized. without manufacturing you have no innovation, no greater shared prosperity no national and economic security

ours is the only industrial nation actively engaged in the destruction of our economic engine. All the major growing economies of the world the so called BRIC countries are doing it with the strength of their mfg base, not by finacial gimmicks yet the US continues on with the failed policies of free trade and total lack of coherent industrial policy.

Also the dcountires with strong mfg are also the ones recovering the fastest - china and germany for example

Nafta = No American Factories Taking Applications - I have been saying this since the days of Ross Perot and his giant sucking sound of jobs going offshore - he was right”

Knocking Down The Biggest Excuse For The Bailout

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 07:29:06 in Politics

“I did the same thing

they all claimed to be against it but voted for it anyway - typical politicians

total tone deafness to the will of the people - whose job it is to represent

both parties are in the pocket of wall street - voters and citizens do not matter

time to throw the bums out and get some new parties”

Knocking Down The Biggest Excuse For The Bailout

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 07:25:57 in Politics

“What they should have done in the first place is stimulate the demand side and help mainstreet

lets start trickling up instead of down

think of all the credit cards, car, student loans and mortgages that would have been payed off or down, the money saved or invested - thus averting the crisis for the majority of people, not to mention the money that would have been spent back into the eocnomy on consumer spending

the TBTF finacial institutions should have been broken up allowed to fail - period

we on main street would be in a much better place today”

“bingo

real coservatism adheres to the principle espoused by most of our founders - avoidence of foreign entanglements

this is a lesson both neocons and neo libs need to relearn

our foriegn meddling is the very root of the anti american sentiment around the world and spreading our military out to thin costs too much maney and does not make us any more secure

Our peaceful neighbors to the north have it about right and tend to mind their nw business in world affairs - you never see angry mobs burning the maple leaf”

“It alredy is. congress and the admin's coziness with wall street and tone defness to the real economy on main street says it all

in addition to Arianna's above listed items, you must add fixing or getting ut of our broken trade "deals" as Obama promised in his campaign

until this insanity of shipping jobs, industry, capital, technology and our directly related prosperity and national security offshore ends, then can be no real jobs recovery,

ours seems to be the only industrial country actively promoting and engaging the destruction of our economic engine, china doesn't do this, nor India, Germany or Japan for that matter = this is where we need an industrial policy to encoruage jobs, investment and innovation at home before going abroad”

Meaningless Fervor Over China's Exchange Rate Policy

Meaningless Fervor Over China's Exchange Rate Policy

Commented Nov 17, 2009 at 07:15:19 in Business

“Chinas currency manipulation is not at all "meaningless" to all the mfg workers in the midwest who are losing their jobs and US based mfrs who are losing their industries thanks to chinas artificial pegging to the dollar.

Chinas currency manipulation is an unfair subisiy to their exports and a defacto tariff on US exports.

If we ever hope to get our financial house in order we need to address the trade imbalance with china and others. theu US needs to get back to making things in the real economy if we want any kind of jobs improvement

IMHO, Geithner and the administration aren't getting tough enough on china and its unfair mercantilist trade policies”

any losses in this area would be more than offset by putting people back to work making things

plus if we got back in the business of making things these same jobs would be put back to use EXPORTING products”

The Dilemma's Innovator

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 08:25:14 in Politics

“A similar thing happens with Indianas property tax structure - those with newer more expensive homes saw breaks of up to 30% on their property taxes, while those of us with older homes in established neighborhoods saw our property taxes increase significantly to make up the difference

preperty taxes are regressive

this structure encourages sprawl and people buying new and discourages buying exisiting homes - hurting neighborhoods”

“the M3 money supply increased when the gold std was removed - thus contributing to the inflation of the 70's one of the key problems that led to federal deficit spending and foreign borrowing

Several economists such as Blinder have suggested returning to a precisous metal std for all the major currencies to moderate the volatility of money markets and prevent currency manipulation

one of the key problems with china trade”

Commented Nov 14, 2009 at 06:17:00 in World

“Yes - is it by design, or simple cluelessness?

I think its more the former than the latter - His economic team is populated with he usual cast of supply sider, free marketeers and "free" trade ideologues

Summers, Geithner, Goolsbee, Furman (who wrote a piece in praise of Walmart) Kirk and the list goes on

and pays no attention to real economists likeVolcker, Roubini, Morici, Stiglitz, Blinder, etc who have been sounding the alarms for some time on our reckless trade and economic policy”

Realization replied on Nov 14, 2009 at 09:09:15

“Agree. Summers and friends will never get it right. They have been part of the problem for years. Treasury has never made any positive input I know of into trade or manufacturing policy. Countries doing well have industrial policies and the industrial policy types can stand toe to toe with the finance types, who often are just set to make sure exchange rates favor exports, that FDI is controlled, and that capital is channeled to targeted industries.

And on economists, they are largely kept out of the decision making process. It's practical and targeted. Picking winners and losers? Not hard really. Just look at the numbers. And if you want to get really sophisticated, set up something like Project Socrates for industry.”
