“There is no evidence that Smoot Hawley had any effect on the great depression - time to stop promoting this long discreditted globalist myth. that was a time of trade surplus. today is different and we have unsustainable trade deficit. a trade deficit is the guage in which jobs, wealth and technology are being drained from our country

Innovation is key, but you can not have innovation in any meaningful way without a manufaturing base - the two are interconnected

Some forms of tariffs, Vats and rebates as well as coherent industrial policy will be the absolutely appropriate method to preserve whats left of mfg - the only true wealth producer and prosperity sharing mechanism in the "real" economy

Unilateral free trade isnt working. time to start getting tougher on trade”

“If there is any sense of decency in the senate at long last, this statement to take away grandmas SS should totally disqualify Helicopter ben

even greed span admitted the so called SS shortfall could be easily remedied with any one or combination of the following - roll back the bush tax cuts for the wealthy, raise the retirement age 2-3 years, and raise the salary cap on the payroll tax. With peoples 401 ks in the toilet, how can any one even consider cutting SS? as far as raising the retirement age - this is unpopular, but is already hapening with people staying on in jobs longer than they had planned because the economy sucks

Of course if we had Gore's much ridiculed "lock box" preventing congress from raiding the SS fund we wouldn't even be talking about this”

billw8017 replied on Dec 03, 2009 at 17:49:43

“Greenspan was not so shameless as to argue that Social Security was going into a deficit. What he said was that there would be more claims on it as the Boomers retired and either the tax would have to be raised or the benefits cut to compensate for the reduction in the government's profit off SS. That is still pretty shameless.

Projections of actual deficit follow the worst of three possible scenarios published by the SS governors, one that assumes an economic growth of 1.9% for the next 30 years, a rate about half the growth during the Depression. During the current recession we have had quarters of negative growth (that is what a recession is), but we have also had a quarter of GDP growth over 3%. This is more like what is to be expected through the long run and SS will continue to yield significant income to the government. It's a big program, a cash cow even without the kind of 30% profits business is looking for.”

the balance needs to be restored to put the productive, real economy back in the for front, and pare the financial sector back to its original purpose”
