“I'm sorry you found this offensive. The humor here is not that eugenics was ever a good idea, or that some have tried to implement it. There's nothing funny about that.

But what is funny is the absurdity that something as radical and unethical as eugenics seems to be the only way to eliminate "pre-existing conditions", since virtually every human being is born with some aspect of their genetic code that can cause health problems.

By presenting the unthinkable alternative to playing the genetic lottery, Colbert is pointing out how unethical and insane the idea of pre-existing conditions is to begin with.

We, as a people, need to stop rewarding people who show no respect for the democratic process with control over our lives. I feel, that if one doesn't vote, one may not hold public office. If you haven't had the experience of voting to show your commitment to the process, how can you be expected to be accountable to your constituents??

For far too long, our, so called, representatives, have been allowed to engage in a "do as I say, not as I do" mentality. We trust that our elected officials will act in our best interest, and when we vote, whether we feel our vote counts or not, we are essentially holding our officials feet to the file. If not in reality, then in our own mind. It is our engagement in the process that will impel us to unelect nonperforming officials.

Though, I am a registered Republican, I have not voted on the right since 1992. I do find that the older I get, the more liberal I become. Of course, since I live in Utah, my vote does not count. I still vote, I still speak out, I do write my senator and representatives. I do this because I know that voting, writing and screaming, keeps me engaged and aware. I urge everyone to do the same. Eventually, my voice will be heard and I don't want to miss the opprotunity!!!”
