On the Polanski Affair

Commented Oct 05, 2009 at 21:36:24 in Entertainment

“Mr. Levy would have us believe that but for Mr. Polanski's international fame, wealth, and prestige, he never would have been re-arrested in the first place. Surely Mr. Levy also understands that but for Mr. Polanski's international fame, wealth, and prestige, he never would have been able to escape the confines of the California penal system in the first place, and spent the last 30 years the free toast of Europe. There would have been no need for this "re-arrest" at all.

Mr. Levy's entire defense here is simply riddled with similar examples of intellectual dishonesty and deliberately inconsistent arguments. Alas, that's what happens when you go about defending the actions and honor of an admitted child rapist.”

In the Know: Scandalous Political Affairs

Commented Sep 11, 2009 at 17:53:02 in Style

“What exactly is the point of this? You recount affairs we all already know about, and then insinuate you know about more, without naming any names. And since there are no names, no sources, we really have no way of believing this most surface offering of sex gossip.”

Neda's Martyrdom and the Pitfalls of Obama's Chronic Pragmatism

Commented Jun 22, 2009 at 15:00:38 in Politics

“"I do know that if the Iranian regime prevails, which it likely will, Republicans will have a field day blaming Democrats for being too tepid in defense of a democratic uprising."

You know what? I think events in Iran should be handled a bit more delicately than just worrying about upsetting the Republican Congressional minority.”

Steve Schmidt: Political Ambulance Chaser

Commented Apr 18, 2009 at 14:37:17 in Politics

“This is a deeply short-sighted article. Not only is it imperative that the LGBT movement pick up "better-late-than-never" types like Steve Schmidt, it's also imperative that we get our history correct, and not alienate people when they do the right thing. As early as the last campaign, Steve Schmidt was speaking to gay and lesbian groups and telling them then he was supportive of gay marriage, and that their day would come soon. This is no deathbed conversion. Kicking sand in his eyes the way Mr. Nickolas is doing here is the definition of counterproductive.”

bowthai replied on Apr 18, 2009 at 15:15:59

“I don't think that your point is necessarily incompatible with Mr. Nickolas's. Yes, even latecomers should be welcomed into the LGBT movement, but that doesn't detract from the curious fact that Steve Schmidt is suddenly very vocal about the issue of gay marriage. The point of this article is he's an opportunist; he's an astute political observer so he seizes on gay rights because he sees that as a way of remaining relevant in future elections. I wish Mr. Nickolas would have elaborated on Schmidt's earlier views more to prove his point, but we all know that the candidate and platform that Schmidt supported so vigorously last fall stands in stark contrast to what he's now espousing. Maybe he genuinely believes in gay rights, and I hope he does, but if, as he said, these are positions he held during the election, then it's unfortunate that this wasn't reflected - in the campaign he managed. If he is only now speaking out as a matter of political expediency, then it's hard to object to Mr. Nickolas's analysis. Schmidt may advance the cause, but he'll only do it so long as it benefits him.”

Stop Bashing the Obama Economic Plan

Stop Bashing the Obama Economic Plan

Commented Mar 24, 2009 at 13:18:32 in Politics

“Paul Krugman long ago left sanity for PUMAVille. I have no problem with criticism of the president from the Left. However, it should be grounded in ideas that are politically feasible, not personal vendettas. Obama offered to meet with Krugman months ago, and the columnist declined. He and his PUMA cohort can kiss it.”

ProudLiberalDan replied on Mar 24, 2009 at 16:09:26

“Criticism of Paul Krugman should be grounded in ideas, not in vendettas by Obamaniacs who resent that someone dared, DARED, to publicly contradict their political hero.”

fausto412 replied on Mar 24, 2009 at 15:18:15

“Politically feasible and quick and dirty first are not always the same. If what Krugman and others wanted done months ago had happened we would be out of this mess right now.”

Michael Ashby replied on Mar 24, 2009 at 14:19:27

“Did you read what he said? He has been right most of the time.

Mr Geithner just testified today that we don't need a backup plan because "this plan will work". You need to do some research on who Mr Geithner is. Also check out who Mr Larry Summers is and his involvement in the deregulation that started in 1999. Geithner and Summers have been the architects and cheerleaders for this disaster. They still don't see any problems with the current system except to give Mr Geithner more power.

Pay particular attention to how Geithner helped Goldman Sachs.”

havisham replied on Mar 24, 2009 at 13:43:30

“Todayslies--So, Krugman, who puts his name on his very public ideas, who has been right about the most important economic matters of the last years, who has explained why he thinks Obama's approach to saving the banks is risky, who has even suggested a less risky approach, is...a PUMA member? And therefore, we should ignore the content of everything he says???? Just making sure I'm following your argument.”

“"Do you doubt that Ms. Kennedy won't have an easier time getting elected (and helping her ticket mate, the Governor, get re-elected) than any other candidate. "

Um, yeah, I do. Here's why: Caroline Kennedy has never run for, or been elected to, any other office in her life. About a half dozen other more qualified candidates throughout NY State have. Also, the common words words I keep hearing describing Caroline Kennedy are "shy" and "reticent". Are these words one most often associates with POLITICIANS? Are they words most often associated with NY VOTERS?

"The fact that she will have two years experience by then certainly won't hurt."

That's circular logic. ANYONE Paterson picks will have two years experience in two years' time. So it's not an added bonus to her qualificiations.”

“"Also, the common words words I keep hearing describing Caroline Kennedy are "shy" and "reticent". Are these words one most often associates with POLITICIANS? Are they words most often associated with NY VOTERS?"

Very good point. New Yorkers are not shy and reticent, and while we recognize that shyness and reticence may be assets at Junior League meetings, they are not necessarily helpful if one's job is to wheel and deal in the Senate.”
