WATCH: Wielding Gavel, Franken Shuts Lieberman Up
Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 23:22:41 in Politics
“I think Franken and others who want the public option back in are seeing traction in needling Lieberman. If they can frustrate the famously unpredictable senator into reneging on his support for the health care deal YET AGAIN, then they provide the impetus for the White House to move to reconciliation, without having the progressives split in two over this thing. Lieberman gets all the blame, and a better bill moves forward.”

“Wait a second Jason: what about the subsidies? You and others like Digby keep talking about the mandate (which was ALWAYS going to be a part of the bill, with or without a public option), but neither of you are even mentioning the subsidies that lower income people will receive in order to purchase that insurance! That's, um, kind of an important component in the discussion!”
AntsyAmerican replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 09:32:37
“It's um kind of obvious the the insurers will raise prices and pocket the subsidy.
The subsidy is a massive transfer of taxpayer $ right to the yacht building companies that health insurers due business with.”

“The subsidies are a joke. On top of them, people will still be forking over hundreds of dollars a month they already don't have for claim-denying for-profit insurance.”
nolabels replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 19:38:34
“Yeah, they make it worse. What the subsidies do is make you more beholden to the insurance companies than you already are if you already do have private insurance. The combination of the mandate, the subsidies and no cost controls, amounts to a massive robbery of the middle class for the pure benefit of the insurance companies.”
SweetTart replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 19:36:29
“It's nice that you are concerned that the insurance industry get these new paying customers, funded via taxpayer dollars, but that's not the change I voted for. The insurance industry is making enough money off of us already, and I don't want them getting taxpayer bail out as well.”
Brett1981 replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 19:34:48
“Taxpayer money to subsidize the insurance companies 30% profit. Is what what you want?
Forcing people to buy into the system doesn't fix the system. We pay double and get half the result of Canada/Europe.
How does funneling more money to insurance companies fix the problem? All it does is redistribute even more wealth to the top 1%.”

Disorderly Conduct: Conversation About Gates Arrest Precedes Arrest

He was in public, it makes it easy for the cops to say he was disturbing the peace by loudly chanting-- especially loudly chanting without a rally permit.”

Media Beating Race-Based Critique Of Sotomayor To Death
Commented Jun 03, 2009 at 13:28:25 in Media
“Interesting article. The end section about how Sotomayor's critics may likely burn out their hardest line of attack against her by the time they need it most raises 2 questions: 1) is it a better strategy to withhold opposition research on an opponent until the absolute most opportune moment, so as to avoid "burning it out"; 2) is such a strategy even possible in today's insanely transparent, leak-driven media?”

“I'd like to see someone (Mr. Stein...?) do some reporting on the connections between Arizona State University and their senior Senator, former presidential candidate John McCain. Surely that would make for an interesting story.”
annieR replied on Apr 11, 2009 at 19:33:52
“Since McCain's name has come up, and we are talking about education, the NY Times reported that Cindy McCain's beer distributorship continues to block an increase in the Arizona liquor tax, even though Arizona's tax is 16% below the national average. The firm, Hensley & Co., blocked an effort to increase the tax to fund early childhood education and additional pediatric hospital beds. Now, Hensley & Co., supports legislation that would require a majority of REGISTERED voters, not just voters who vote in a referendum, to approve such an increase. Further, with Arizona firing hundreds of teachers (400 in the Gilbert, AZ, district alone) the Republican -dominated state legislature did not even consider increased revenue.”

Laura Ingraham Calls Meghan McCain A "Useful Idiot"

“Nice to see Eva Braun--excuse Laura Ingraham--trot out the well-worn Jessica Simpson lie. To repeat: Matt Lauer held up a cover of a People magazine, showing Obama that he was not the center item anymore--Jessica Simpson had replaced him. Obama read the headline, which said she was having a "weight battle". If reading a magazine headline is akin to attacking its subject, I guess we're all screwed.”

911 McNuggets Call: Latreasa L. Goodman Calls 911 3 Times Over McNuggets "Emergency" (VIDEO)
Commented Mar 04, 2009 at 14:15:01 in Comedy
“While she shouldn't have called 911, this headline/story is not filling in the blanks. The McDonald's management refused to give the woman her money back. This was after she ordered McNuggets, they took her money, and then told her they had no McNuggets. She called police to complain about McDonald's refusing her money, not to complain about the lack of McNuggets.”
MaryQue replied on Mar 04, 2009 at 14:31:48

Ms. Goodman shouldn't have called 911, but that manager owes her at least a refund and a very public apology.”
