The last superpower standing is the world's bully boy and greatest terrorist state. If you think the terrorism of al Qaeta is so great, consider the millions innocent civilian men, women and children, uncles, aunts, grandmothers and grandfathers that our nation has slaughtered/butchered just in the two current Middle East wars. Neither war it at all effective in stopping Middle East terroristm, rather just another excuse to enrich our war industry with absurd contracts for overpriced superweapons when we are fighting a guerilla war against insurgents. The billion dollar stealth fighters and bombers can't fly in bad weather, for god sake, because their stealth coating washes off in rain. We don't even need the stealth aircraft to fight against nations that have neither an air force nor radar to detect our planes.”

“"Your "morality" has nothing to do with the truth."

Simple question: how do you know?

"Your "God" @borts 30-40% of all pregnancies in all stages of pregnancy from conception to full term, so how moral is your God?"

By this logic, God also "kills" all others who die of natural causes or disease. Man, I wish Uncle Bob were still around. Too bad God gave him cancer and killed him.

" so how moral is your God?"

Depends on whose definition of God you're using. I believe in the God of Deism. So, I believe universal rights come from God. In fact, the God of Deism's morality is based on the Categorical Imperative, which itself is based on logic and a foundational assumption that we shouldn't harm one another.”

“"What you have written is absurd. Switerland, nor any country, will allow medically assisted suicide for depressives that are otherwise healthy."

Think again. Switzerland has some of the most liberal suicide laws in the world. And what is written in the law is often overlooked. Mentality unstable people have indeed committed suicide in Switzerland (schizophrenic Walter Wittwer for one), taking advantage of its loose laws where few questions are asked.

And, anyway, you're missing the larger point about quality of life. QOL has begun to dominate the field of medicine. For example, Down syndrome is not a terminal illness, but when a woman is pregnant with a Down's child, the doctor will almost always suggest aborting it. Why? QOL. Not terminal illness. Very subjective definitions of "quality" are creeping into the world of medicine.”

“This is tragic, but if he had went to Switzerland and legally committed suicide he would be hailed, by some, as a hero. This is why the suicide debate is so thorny. What was his "quality of life" with depression? Maybe he didn't want to be treated. So, he made a choice. Was he right? How do you decide, objectively, what quality of life is?”

LemonMeringue replied on Nov 11, 2009 at 16:35:30

“I think it is impossible for anyone to answer that question - what is quality of life - for another.”

LemonMeringue replied on Nov 11, 2009 at 16:13:36

“Treatment for depression is hit or miss. Many try everything - everything - and cannot get better. David Foster Wallace succumbed a few months ago after trying everything, even shock treatments. When you have tried everything, and ever minute you are awake is a living hell, what are you supposed to do?”

hypnotoad72 replied on Nov 11, 2009 at 14:19:50

“Try suffering depression.

Try suffering from afflictions, that society deems are wrong, which in turn cultivates depression (see my direct response to the article as to what those are, which I posted literally 2 minutes ago, but I will add all sorts of drug treatments may not work at all, or have the opposite effect, or FAR WORSE, have side effects like weight gain. Not everybody is fat because they have a diet of chocolate bars downed by a cool glass of melted ice cream and a dexatrim, for crying out loud!!).

Trust me, or you really ought to trust me when I say, "Depression really does lower the quality of a person's life."”

edwoodjr replied on Nov 11, 2009 at 14:00:51

“So the Swiss allow non-terminally ill people to simply "kill themselves"? That's news to me! The Swiss laws are COMPASSION LAWS allowing one with a terminal illness to end one's life on their terms with less suffering and at a chosen time; it is NOT intended as a "way out" for a treatable issue/problem.”

roshni replied on Nov 11, 2009 at 13:49:23

“He was not terminally ill. People who are terminally ill are the ones who can legally commit suicide in Switzerland.
This is a different situation and it involves depression.”

NoMercy replied on Nov 11, 2009 at 13:22:29

“What you have written is absurd.

Switerland, nor any country, will allow medically assisted suicide for depressives that are otherwise healthy. Depression can be treated, and successfully - even cured. Terminal illness with constant profound pain can not. That is the objective criterion - physical and measurable, and matched to the patients' wishes.”
