“The only nutrient that can't come naturally from a whole food Vegan diet is B12. So it requires supplementation or fortification. That said, most people, regardless of whole diet would benefit from some sort of supplementation or fortification and more to the point if your diet has meat or dairy in it in the first place, there's a really good chance you're already getting fortified foods. If you eat bread or cereal or yogurt, same deal.
Isolating this one issue about Veganism, which anyone who goes Vegan knows about their diet, doesn't make it extreme or unhealthy, it makes it particular.
Plenty of non-Vegans have b12, iron, and calcium deficiencies, and no one really ever discusses their diet as being extreme, just lacking....then most people just recommend foods and vitamins that fulfill those needs.
No one cares if you like Veganism or not, but you're not dropping truthbombs or anything...just framing things to fit your own ideology.”

“given that we discover new nutrients all the time your statement '' The only nutrient that can't come naturally from a whole food Vegan diet is B12.'' is ridiculous.”

“Most people with nutritional deficiencies aren't claiming that their diets are ideal or healthy. If they are, then they're guilty of the same cognitive dissonance of many in the vegan community.”

“I disagree with you. I was also puzzled at the "Cuban-American" denotation, after I read he was born and raised in NY. I am reading this article as someone who did not know of this man beforehand, so was very objective in my reading, and that content stood out. I suppose someone who has an emotional or intellectual attachment to this man would feel differently, but as someone simply reading an article of journalism, it seems incorrect to label Mr. Hijuelos that way.”

“comments show a lot about a person, don't they? :)”
“White people are "allowed" to do this already and pretty much always have....oh and white people can join the NAACP...oh and they can go to Historically Black Colleges....and pretty much every other example you can think of.....white people are allowed to do.”

“Allowed to and actually getting in are 2 very different things.”
