Lieberman Wins: Medicare Compromise On Chopping Block

Lieberman Wins: Medicare Compromise On Chopping Block

Commented Dec 14, 2009 at 22:00:13 in Politics

“The democrats are going to be in the wilderness come 2010.”

liberalbug replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 22:38:36

“They are blowing a huge mandate and sucking the wind right out of a lot of young progressive sails. These folks will never, ever come back to vote for a democratic candidate based upon the performance of the party and the president in these last 12 months. Can't blame republicans anymore. Democrats have only themselves to blame.”

kasinca replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 22:08:25

“Because of all the good alternatives the Party of No is offering to each of these situations? Keep in mind that your party to replace the democrats are the problem, not the solution. Use your brain.”

lilalove replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 20:54:37

“Now.

Two senior Democratic sources tell CNN senate Democrats are headed towards dropping the compromise idea to allow 55 to 64 year-olds to buy into Medicare because of opposition from Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman.

With out reconciliation.. what can they do? Get half of what they want and then add more legislation later on... by way of reconciliation... all they would need was 51 votes.. and Biden could cast the tie breaker even if the worse were to happen in the 2010 elections.”

Tomlastliberalleft replied on Dec 11, 2009 at 13:15:51

“No. What we need to do is accept responsibility for our actions because none of the politicians of late has ever been known to do that simple thing. Those of us who once were a part of OFA have had our backsides bruised by the reality that is American politics. We have watched carefully as the systems hunkered down into defense mode and usurped the electoral process that made its wishes clear only to witness the scoundrels in Washington do what they have always done before. We so-called progressives will do one of two things. We will either abandon the electoral process altogether and retreat into the political isolation we have learned to accept or we will be forced to continue to support the Democrats in the sure knowledge that the alternative is so twisted and foul that we simply cannot do anything else and have enough peace of mind to nurture some dim hope that right and justice may yet prevail. The 2010 election will indicate exactly where this country intends to head and at this point things look pretty bleak. The third option is to break away from the established parties and offer an alternative. Things will have to get much worse before that is likely to happen.”

Commented Dec 10, 2009 at 09:44:04 in Politics

“I certainly understand the CBC's frustration with President Obama. Many of us were hoping this time around we would have a president who is about the people. Because of Obama's unique background many people naively or not thought Obama would be different. But at the end of the day-he's politician first.”

JMBrodie replied on Dec 10, 2009 at 09:50:36

“He always was a politician. So are the CBC members. I think a lot of us walked into this thinking changes happened overnight in a real democracy. As we are seeing with the healthcare bill, nothing comes easy, there are compromises and the outcomes are not always perfect.

We did not vote for a messiah. At least I did not. If at the end of the four years, you all still find yourselves unhappy, get into the voting booth and "vote the bums out."

Until then, a mix of patience and persistence would be wise.”
