“-- Extend coverage to 31 million Americans, the largest expansion of coverage since the creation of Medicare.
-- Ensure that you can choose your own doctor.
-- Finally stop insurance companies from denying coverage due to a pre-existing condition.
-- Make sure you will never be charged exorbitant premiums on the basis of your age, health, or gender.
-- Guarantee you will never lose your coverage just because you get sick or injured.
-- Protect you from outrageous out-of-pocket expenditures by establishing lifetime and annual limits.
-- Allow young people to stay on their parents' coverage until they're 26 years old.
-- Create health insurance exchanges, or "one-stop shops" for individuals purchasing insurance, where insurance companies are forced to compete for new customers.
-- Lower premiums for families, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office -- especially for struggling folks who will receive subsidies.
-- Help small businesses provide health care coverage to their employees with tax credits and by allowing them to purchase coverage through the exchanges.
-- Improve and strengthen Medicare by eliminating waste and fraud (without cutting basic benefits), beginning to close the Medicare Part D donut hole, and extending the life of the Medicare trust fund.
-- Create jobs by reining in costs -- fostering competition, reducing waste and inefficiency, and starting to reward doctors and hospitals for quality, not quantity, of care.
-- Cut the deficit by over $130 billion in the next 10 years.”

“exorbitant premiums on the basis of your age, health, or gender.
What do you consider exorbitant premiums? paying twice or 3 times as much if you are 50 yrs old. Paying up to 300% as much for a pre existing condition? Are those fair premiums? Of course, that is whatever the average premium is by the time this becomes law which is either 2013 or 2014. In the meantime they can charge whatever they want and raise premiums as much as they want till the exchange gets set up. You will either be forced to pay, or granted hardship status. Aside from that they can continue to refuse and deny service, pay or not pay or just covering 10 % because they are not forced to pay anything till 2013 or 2014.
-- Allow young people to stay on their parents' coverage until they're 26 years old.
This is the only part besides the mandate that will go into effect immediately.”

“I'll agree that all that SOUNDS good. Let's see it all get implemented and then I'll be happy to concede that this might be a good thing after all.
You'll be able to choose your own doctor provided they can stay in practice with the reduced fees they'll receive.
We'll have to see how the whole exchange and subsidies work in practice, yet they do sound good in theory.
Some analyses suggest that premiums will actually go UP for many already insured because the numbers are based upon EVERYONE participating, which will NOT happen.
Cut the deficit--not a chance. Historically government programs are underfunded and WAY overbudget.
Again, I HOPE I'm wrong. I'd sure love for all this pie to fall from the sky.”

“The $130 billion arises from the scheduled reduction in doctor's payments of 21 % contained in the Senate bill. However, everyone knows Congress plans a "doctors' fix" to sharply reduce the cut, if not eliminate it entirely, in separate legislation. This will significantly diminish if not erase that $130 billion "saving". Without a public option all of these savings and cost controls are smoke and mirrors.”
Patroclus replied on Dec 24, 2009 at 17:51:43
“As to the $130 billion: Does the CBO analysis of the Senate health bill --the one that shows a 10-year deficit reduction of $132 billion--really assume that the scheduled reduction in doctor's payments of 21 % will actually go into effect- even though everyone knows Congress plans a "doctors' fix" to sharply reduce the cut, if not eliminate it entirely, in separate legislation. No, that little bit of information was left out.... smoke and mirrors.”

I understood you. Obama has broken many of his campaign promises--Public Option(watch the tape on another thread), DADT, transparency, no earmarks(the spending Bill he signed last week had 5000), etc.
Like many, you clearly understand that this is "reform" in name only.
In fact to call either Bill reform is an insult to the intelligence of those who pay attention.
As it currently stands , it's a huge Christmas present to the Insurance Cos.
& Big Pharma.
Maybe that will change with a reconciled Bill, because many things could happen on the way to it, but I doubt that much that is positive will come out of the process.
Those in Congress know who their bosses are, and it hasn't been the American people in far too long.
As I said earlier on this thread, I REALLY HOPE I'm wrong, but the fact that Insurance and Pharma stocks surged on the news of this Bill's likely passage leads me to believe that we're all about to get s/crewed.”

I wouldn't say Capitalism can't work or even that it's bad. But
there's not question that the particular model of it in place is
a croc.
I personally lean toward Socialism -- hardly claiming it's the

unquestionably puts a reasonable cap on wealth that
trickles down to the less fortunate.
We get on our high horse in this country over the nearly
godly thing we make Capitalism out to be, but in fact it is
Socialism that more surely requires us to be our brother's

I don't mind wealth. I think it's fine. But I don't believe in
1% of the population having 95% of the wealth and trying
to sell us on the belief that the genius behind their innovation

The backs of the little man are as much responsible for our
cars and medicines and exploration of space as the greatest

I don't believe is just giving. Everyone should work. Everyone
should contribute, but we cannot call ourselves Americans and
blame a man because he is born with less skill or intelligence
and evolve that to a right to keep him uneducated, underpaid

“And this is the best of all possible worlds! Let's have some more vacuous sloganeering; that will certainly solve the problems the nation faces. And what more effective approach than advancing a conspiracy of "professional writers"? A president must get most of his agenda near completion the first year because at the next congressional election, only two years into his term, seats of his party are usually lost. One year is a huge amount of time in Washington politics and to fritter it away as BO has done is inexcusable. To act as if BO has all the time in the world, or even four years, ignores the realpolitik. The list of opportunities BO has missed is as long as his campaign promises. His DoJ brief on DOMA was despicable and directly contradicted his campaign statements, he continues to allow DADT to eject qualified military personnel, he has not acted on reform of Wall Street, basic research policy continues to founder, the list goes on.....”
