Voting Rights Act Section 4 Struck Down By Supreme Court

Voting Rights Act Section 4 Struck Down By Supreme Court

Commented Jun 26, 2013 at 11:33:10 in Politics

“Its not 1963, its 2013. Is it really fair to nanny a handful of states and impose government control over their election processes. Could gerrymandering, voter intimidation, and other unfair election processes be occuring in other states too, such as Illinios, Michigan, Pennsylvannia, New York, California, etc? Absolutely. So either leave Sec 5 repealed or apply it to all 50 states and hold DOJ accountable for enforcing the act fairly among all the states. But stop nannying just the Southern states.”

ChoppyBob on Jun 26, 2013 at 22:11:01

“because Paula Deen is just a sweet little old lady, and the Southern states are NOT full of defenders of Paula Deen. Oh, wait...”

“Then why 2 hours after the ruling did Texas institute a redistricting law that was struck down by the justice department as being racist?”

“Mississippi passed a voter ID law which was probably one of the best and most fair. Mississippi will give, free of charge, a voter ID card to any register MS voter. Aside from that, voters may use any other form of official goverment ID. Unlike Texas' voter ID law, that one could not be shot down by DOJ because there was nothing to deny it on. Instead, the DOJ has decided to drag it's feet to stall. That is the problem with Section 5. Its not 1965 anymore. And its not fair to block a handful of states while allowing other non-southern states make changes at any time. Either leave Sec 5 repealed or apply it to all 50 states and hold DOJ accountable for enforcing the act fairly among all the states. But stop nannying just the Southern states.”

“I can sum up all electoral and legislative activity in Tennessee and Mississippi: Jesus, Jesus, Unborn Babies, Capitalism, Jesus, Jesus. That is why other quality of life indicators are so awful. And that is why I am pleased to hear about obtaining voter ID in Mississippi.”

“The Justice Department has not received all the pertinent information needed to make a ruling. Among the items missing is the Secretary of State's specific procedures to implement voter ID across the state. The state Legislature has also failed to fund the law, which the Mississippi Legislative Budget Office estimated could cost the state up to $1.5 million in lost revenue.”

“"The White House reacted by saying that while sacrifices would be required on all sides, Ryan's budget didn't achieve that."While the House Republican budget aims to reduce the deficit, the math just doesn't add up," said spokesman Jay Carney in a statement. "Deficit reduction that asks nothing from the wealthiest Americans has serious consequences for the middle class.""

I thought the Republicans sacrificed back during the "fiscal cliff", remember, when they caved to Obama to increase taxes on the "wealthiest Americans" and got no spending cuts in return.”

Adam313 on Mar 12, 2013 at 21:37:08

“Caved to increase taxes? Taxes would increase without any action. Any action is a decrease in taxes relative to what they'd be with no action. Top rate is $400k+ instead of $250k+.”

chuk98death on Mar 12, 2013 at 21:03:51

“Remember when the debt ceiling was passed with only spending cuts? Or when the sequester made of only spending cuts went into effect?

Yeah.

Let do some book keeping. 2 trillion (achieved in ten years) in spending cuts during debt ceiling.1.2 (in ten years) sequester spending cuts.

Fiscal cliff, 600 billion (in ten years).

That seem balanced to you?”

Uncas72 on Mar 12, 2013 at 21:01:36

“By that logic, the GOP got $1.5T in cuts back in 2011, with no new revenues. Are we done? Or is there a round 2?”

“Tasers are never to be used on someone branishing a firearm. There is a force continum police use which states you match force with equal force. Tasers are "less-lethal" (yes, they CAN be deadly too.) If this kid was holding a knife, he'd probably would have been tased. Being it was a gun, he was matched with equal force. At that point, if he'd dropped the gun as instructed, he would still be alive today. Because he didn't, he ultimately committed suicide. Tragic, but this story would have been more tragic if he had a real firearm and killed a dozen students in the process.”

“You've got to be out of your mind!! Binoculars? Really?? That the gun was a pellet gun is irrelevant. It was one of the models that were designed to look exactly like a high caliber handgun. Its easy to criticize the police's actions from your armchair, but in the heat of the moment, in a school hallway with dozens of children's lives endangered, with someone branishing what was believed to be a handgun, in an era known for deadly school shootings, the police acted absolutely appropriately You never meet deadly force with non-deadly force. All that would have done was potentially resulted in the deaths of the police officers as well as civilians. And its not about the police wanting to kill, or "us vs them" as you like to put it. I guarrantee you that officer(s) did not want to kill anyone that day, and now will probably suffer psychiatric and emotional damages for the rest of their lives because of it. Why is it so hard for people to assign responsiblilty on this kid who was obviously at fault.”

“How is it different? If I am not mistaken, that too was a 15 year old boy who exited the vehicle with an assult rifle and wasted two cops. Today, when school shootings are unfortunately commonplace, someone pointing a pistol at people in a school hallway is grounds for using lethal force. The gun being determined to be a air pistol after the fact is irrelevant. It looked exactly like the real deal. If you don't believe me, just go down to your local sporting goods stores and check them out. I was alarmed just how much some of these air guns looked like the real deal.”

Police have always been trained to shoot center mass (i.e. center torso) to minimize the chance of a missed shot hitting innocent bystanders. Any time you discharge a firearm it is considered lethal force, and it is called lethal force for a reason.”

I'm asking a question that apparently YOU couldn't find a sufficiently cogent response to so you then attempt to denigrate the questioner. I have more guns than you can begin to imagine and I very much enjoy using those guns. But if cops are going to kill anyone they FEEL is threatening them with a firearm those of us who enjoy guns and carry them with us LAWFULLY should be just as afraid of a cop with an itchy trigger finger or one has had one too many cappuccinos as any criminal with a gun. In the past police would simply shoot people in the back, and a subject such as this one would be riddled with bullet holes. Police are under much more scrutiny now than ever before, and more police officers have died because of it. The cops did what they were supposed to do, the kid didn't, got stupid, and got killed. Why do people find it so hard to find the kid at fault for this? He did this to himself, and now he may have mentally scarred the officer who had to do this dreadful act.”
